WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

OUR YMCA MISSION The YMCA of Greater New York is a community-based service organization which promotes positive values through programs that build spirit, mind, and body, welcoming all people with a focus on youth.

OUR VALUES Caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.

YMCA DAY CAMP OBJECTIVES YMCA Summer Day Camp helps campers ages 3-12 years old and teens ages 13-16 years old grow mentally and physically by participating in challenging activities in both small and large group settings under the supervision of a caring and well trained staff.

SUMMER LEARNING To succeed in school and life, children and young adults need ongoing opportunities to learn and practice essential skills. This is especially true during the summer months when children lose much of what they learn during the school year. YMCA of Greater New York Day Camps provide high-quality summer learning initiatives that give children a variety of ways to improve reading and math skills and explore music, drama, dance and sports. Through fun, themed curriculum that incorporates key academic components, children will practice and further their academic skills, learn to plan and create projects, learn teamwork and develop new skills. To inspire reading, our program will provide books recommended by the Department of Education for summer reading.

CAMP LOCATION The Harlem YMCA Summer Day Camp operates out of the Jackie Robinson Youth Center located at 181 west 135th Street, New York NY, 10030. We also use offsite facilities such as local parks and schools to conduct Day Camp.

ADVENTURE CAMP (Sessions 1 - 4) The Harlem YMCA’s Adventure Camp Programs focus on a variety of recreational and motiva-tional activities to inspire and activate our youth from ages 5-12. Campers will be delighted to participate in instructional swimming, arts & crafts, academic enrichment, trips, character development, sports and health & wellness. Every summer, the Adventure Camp Programs are themed per session. Our themed sessions allow our participants to be well rounded in sports and also encourages our youth to obtain an appreciation for the arts, such as dance & music. Campers will be gaining positive experiences and creating many new friends during our summer camp. Let the fun begin!

SOCCER & MUSIC CAMP (Session 1, July 2-13) Our goal at the Harlem YMCA Summer Camp’s two week long soccer session is to offer every camper the opportunity to develop their soccer skills, practice teamwork, and learn strategies for game play. Our coaches will review juggling, proper warm up techniques, passing, shooting, heading, defense, offense, and goal keeping. Our small group games will provide a rewarding experience for your child, developing their self confidence both on and off the field. Has your child ever dreamed of becoming the next big pop star or starting their own band? If so, the Harlem YMCA Summer Camp’s two week music session is your child’s time to shine! Our instructors will introduce different musical genres while teaching your child the basics of reading music. Every child will fine tune their stage presence and performance skills as they prepare to show off their musical talents at our camp picnic.

BASEBALL, T-BALL, & DANCE CAMP (Session 2, July 16-27) Imagine hearing the crack of a bat and the cheer of your teammates while running full speed from base to base until you make a home run. The Harlem YMCA will provide the ultimate Baseball/ T-ball experience at our two week session. Your child will learn catching, pitching, batting, infield and outfield skills while learning social skills such as team work and team spirit. This session also covers specific game strategies covering base running, field coverage, positions and the basic rules and regulations of the game. Let your child become the Yankees next draft pick here at the Harlem YMCA and learn how to play the game like the pros. Does your child like to jam to all the latest music at home? If so, the Harlem YMCA fuses the most popular musical selections and trendy dance choreography into a two week dance session. Dance classes will include exercises, across the floor skills and routines. Our instructors will teach campers how to move their bodies and express themselves incorpo-rating movements with elements of culture, hip-hop and classics. Campers will in turn learn to identify their unique freestyle skills and develop their own sense of style. Your child will get to show off his/her new moves and confidence to parents, counselors and campers during our family night.

EXPLORE PLAY AND GROW Each week of camp provides your child hands-on activities including educational field trips and themed days.

VOLLEYBALL & KARATE CAMP (Session 3, July 3O– August 10) During the volleyball two week session, our campers will learn strategic rules of the game while developing their upper body strength and tactical skills. Techniques such as passing, setting, blocking, hitting, and serving are among the many they will learn this summer. Karate is one of the most effective forms of self-defense. At the Harlem YMCA Summer Camp two week karate session, campers will develop fitness, discipline and effective defense techniques. Karate will teach campers the importance of patience, respect and self-control, while building up their confidence and strength. HIYA!

BASKETBALL & DRAMA CAMP (Session 4, August 13-24) The Harlem YMCA is a place where hoop dreams begin. In 1981, Dr. James Naismith founded the game of basketball at the YMCA in Springfield, Massachusetts. At the Harlem YMCA, our basketball program is live and direct, providing fundamental and detailed instruction from our athletic sports specialist. Your child will gain techniques in dribbling, footwork, rebounding, passing, catching and ball handling. This two week session will improve your child’s defensive and offensive skills and strategically teach them to shoot to score the most points. Whether a beginner or advanced, short or tall, each camper will progress at their own speed. Let’s build hoop dreams. Most kids can watch their favorite movies with admirable actors or characters over and over- some parents can, too! The Harlem YMCA’s two week drama program is the newest component to our summer camp phenomenon. The camper that loves Wolverine from X-Men or Sandy from Grease will engage in a variety of warm-up games, improvisations, and group activities. We’ll tap into your child’s imagination using gestures, senses, concentration, and self expression. Each activity has a goal of learning a new acting technique. This session will allow your child to explore the excitement of character development and become their favorite hero while developing their communication skills.

SWIM CAMP (Sessions 1-4) The Harlem YMCA’s Swim Camp is a holistic approach for a great summer of fun and personal growth. Our professional, caring, and nurturing aquatics team focuses on campers’ individual development as swimmers. Our seasoned water safety instructors and lifeguards provide a safe and fun learning environment that is structured to meet swimmers’ individual needs by facilitat-ing small group instruction as well as water activities that boost campers’ confidence and self-esteem in and out of the pool.

TENNIS CAMP (Sessions 2 & 3) The Tennis Camp for boys and girls, ages 8-12, will provide instruction in the following areas: serve, volley, backhand, forehand, beginning strategies, scoring and court etiquette. All skills and technique will be taught from the game base approach which include the PAS tech-niques. Academics, team work and life skills will be stressed throughout the sessions. Academics, team work and life skills will be stressed throughout the sessions. The camp will operate during Sessions 2 and 3 during the summer.

Page 8: Harlem YMCA Summer Day Camp 2012

KINDER CAMP (Sessions 1-4) Kinder Camp is a specialty camp where children play to learn! Kinder Camp’s environment gives preschoolers the chance to explore, socialize, learn and enjoy the activities and events the Harlem YMCA camp has to offer. This is the perfect introduction to the YMCA camp experience because it allows preschoolers the opportunity to make new friends, learn new skills and also builds an eagerness to participate in summer camp for years to come. Our trained and caring staff will introduce campers to singing, arts/music, sports, academic learning (phonetics, mathematics, etc), storytelling, games, and swimming (twice a week). Kinder Camp’s curriculum focuses on the dynamics of character values that are relevant to preschoolers such as problem solving, moral judgment, healthy eating, physical fitness, and personal expression. Kinder Camp will also develop camper’s independency and encourage taking on new things, as well as self-confidence. Campers will gain and understand responsibility and the fundamentals of leadership. The overall goal for Kinder Camp is to have campers develop personal growth in all dynamics and transition it outside of camp. Kinder Camp’s staff/camper ratio is 1:4 and our program runs from 9am-4pm, with extended hours available from 4pm-6pm.

EXTENDED DAY CAMP (Sessions 1-4) Parents… Ever feel like all you need is a little more time at camp because of your work schedule? The YMCA has formulated the perfect solution- “Extended Day.” This program was created to add extra assistance for working parents who need additional child care from 4pm to 6pm and it has become so much more fun for our campers. We help meet the needs of working families while providing a different experience during our regular hours by enhancing the activities of choice in combination with structured recreational activities for healthy living. We consider your child’s input and interests in order to offer more Extended Day activity options during summer camp. Extended Day camp is for kids ages 3-12.

LEADERS TEEN CAMP (Sessions 1-4) No teen ever wants to be a follower, unless they are following in the steps of a good leader or leading themselves! With the purpose of becoming a great leader, teens will have the opportunity to take on new challenges this summer. Becoming a teenager may seem very overwhelming at times for many young individuals. They deal with many everyday issues in regards to being misunderstood; trying to standout in a crowd or even following the wrong crowd. Then there are other teens that may battle with bullying, peer pressure, and making the right decisions in life. The Harlem YMCA Leaders Teen Camp staff understands these struggles and is here to help our teens with these day to day struggles. We like making camp feel like an exclusive club to our teens, where they can build healthy relationships with others and feel comfortable to express themselves as teenagers amongst other teens! We hold daily teen talk discussions placing particular attention on issues that interest and impact many teenagers of today. Topics can range from teen music, television, magazines, and technology. Teens will also have the opportunity to explore issues within their

community and society, based on current events and their personal experiences. This gives our teens the opportunity to learn how to articulate their opinions by communicating and expressing themselves as young respectful individuals. In addition, they will learn how to develop their communication, leadership, and public speaking skills by taking part in these discussions.

By giving the teens new challenges and guidance on a daily basis, they will learn the necessary skills and character development that is needed to succeed in life. Taking part in sports, goal setting and group discussion activities, along with service learning projects and field trips all based on the fundamentals of education, teens will see the importance of their role in society and how their voice matters. They will learn the importance of community service, healthy relationships and decision making, leading these future leaders to want to live a healthy lifestyle. Furthermore, they will realize everyone in their own unique way can be a leader within a team!
