Club Established September, 2014 www.hapc.ca June, 2020

The first year of the provost golf club was a huge success. It was a sketchy start in May with many cancellations due to soggy conditions. But by June and July we were golfing regularly. A different course each week, whenever we could arrange a good deal! Courses played included Black Horse, Highland Glen, Pike Lake, Northern Dunes and Saugeen. In August we began to replay course favourites. Although our group size varied from 4 to 18, good time was always guaranteed. We plan to play throughout September and into October if weather permits. It was a fantastic season! Consider joining us next year.

Time for Some Adult Humour (from Joel Cote): Joke #1: Smart Ass Answer of the Year A college teacher reminds her class of tomorrow’s final exam. “Now class, I won’t tolerate any excuses for you not being here tomorrow. I might consider a nuclear attack or a serious personal injury, illness, or death in your immediate family, but that’s it, no other excuses whatsoever!” A smart ass student in the back of the room raised his hand and asked, “What would you say if tomorrow I said I was suffering from complete and utter sexual exhaustion?” The entire class was reduced to laughter and snickering. When silence was restored, the teacher smiled knowingly at the student, shook her head and sweetly said, “Well, I guess you’d have to write the exam with your other hand.” Joke #2: Better Turkey An industrious turkey farmer was experimenting with breeding to perfect a better turkey. His family was fond of the leg portion for dinner and it seemed that there were never enough legs for everyone. After many frustrating attempts, the farmer was relating the results of his efforts to his friends at the general store get together. “Well I finally did it! I bred a turkey that has six legs!” They all asked the farmer how it tasted. “I don’t know” said the farmer. “I’ve never been able to catch the darn thing!” I hope that you enjoyed your touch of humour. Please continue to be safe. On behalf of myself, and the entire Management Committee, we look forward to the day when we can once again safely meet to chat, discuss and to share a laugh or two. You are missed!!! Take care of each other, Joel Cote, Hanover and Area PROBUS President 2019-2020

ACTIVITIES:

Pending government and Public Health directives some of our activity groups may consider restarting their activities when and where it may be safe to do so. Social distancing will continue to be the norm. See below for list of activity groups and their Coordinators. Golf - We know that some of you are quite anxious to begin the Probus golf season. Unfortunately the organizational team doesn’t feel comfortable promoting the gathering of a large group of at risk people. So we have decided to suspend the season until further notice and will revisit this decision if restrictions change. In the meantime, feel free to reach out to people in the Golf group and set up a tee time for a small group. Stay healthy and stay safe.

Scrabble has not been able to be played as a group since Covid-19. Some of us play against the computer. But the computer doesn’t do “social time” and it is terrible at making a good cup of tea. We look forward to playing again in the future. I want to thank all who have participated in making scrabble challenging but fun for all. Each of us has learned many new words, although the meaning and use in a sentence often eludes us. Ruth Linnen will be taking over as co-ordinator in September, assuming that we are able to gather in groups inside the home, and we can find a way to keep the tiles sanitized as we play. Adult Continuous Education - We chose to explore the Crash Course, Navigating Digital Information series for our first activity. This was a 10 part course. We started in the Library on March 3rd and had 23 folks attend, 12 Probus members and 11 from the general public. We reviewed the first 3 videos: 1) Online Information - Introduction to Crash Course Navigating Digital Information #1 2) The Facts about Fact Checking: Crash Course Navigating Digital Information #2 3) Check Yourself with Lateral Reading: Crash Course Navigating Digital Information #3 While the second session was scheduled for March 23, the COVID 19 pandemic had other plans. With the library closed and discretion the better part of valour the session was cancelled. In consultation with the group, we decided to give online virtual meetings a try. The Library was using Zoom for these purposes so we proceeded to use their service. The rest of the course videos were: 4) Who Can You Trust? Crash Course Navigating Digital Information #4 5) Using Wikipedia: Crash Course Navigating Digital Information #5 6) Evaluating Evidence: Crash Course Navigating Digital Information #6 7) Evaluating Photos & Videos: Crash Course Navigating Digital Information #7 8) Data & Infographics: Crash Course Navigating Digital Information #8 9) Click Restraint: Crash Course Navigating Digital Information #9 10) Social Media: Crash Course Navigating Digital Information #10 While the virtual meeting setting is not ideal and attendance averaged 12 members we did enjoy both the topic and our meeting to discuss them. We are taking the summer off and intend to resume sessions in September. Thanks to the folks that took advantage of the activity and a special thanks to Norma and the staff at the Library for their assistance in getting this activity going. As they say, see you in September. If you would like more information about this activity, please contact Craig Brown at [email protected]
