Different types of splints
Static Splints
A static splint has no moving parts and may be supportive, corrective or protective.
Serial Static Splints
Serial static splints position soft tissues towards the end of their avail-able range to help increase tissue length. Serial splinting involves ei-ther a series of adjustments to the same splint or the therapist making a series of splints.
Dynamic Splints
A dynamic splint consists of a static base onto which levers, springs or pulleys may be attached. They assist weak muscle function, mobilise stiff joints or may substitute for lost muscle or nerve function.
Static Progressive Splints
Static progressive splints involve the application of a low-load pro-longed stretch at the end of the available movement. They often in-volve the use of turnbuckles, screws or non-elastic tape. They are some-times classified as a dynamic splint.
Pre-Fabricated Splints
Pre-fabricated splints are frequently used by clinicians. They offer the user a quick, ready-made splint, which may be beneficial in terms of time and cost effectiveness. They are available for many joints, in a wide variety of sizes, price points and colours. Most are adjustable and require a thorough assessment by the clinician prior to issue.
Thermoplastics: introduction
Splints are classified in a variety of ways. The Splint Classifications System (ASHT, 1992) has been developed but many clinicians still use the day-to-day terms of static / resting, dynamic, static progressive or serial splints. These are defined below as they are most commonly used in workplaces today.

Thermoplastics: introduction
Features of Thermoplastics
Drape / Conformability
The ease with which a material conforms to a surface when it is heated. • A high degree of drape enables a precise fit with minimal handling = increased comfort and reduced pressure areas
• High drape materials are preferred by the skilled splinter who is confident with their handling skills • Minimal drape is often preferred when splinting larger areas as the material is easier to handle and provides more stability
Resistance to stretch
The extent to which a material resists pulling or stretching when heated. • Materials with maximum resistance require firm handling and are used for larger splints, increased tone and uncooperative patients
• Materials with a low/minimum resistance to stretch are preferred when making small intricate hand and finger splints
Bonding
The degree to which a material will stick to itself when heated.
Uncoated • Effective bonding without the need to treat/prepare surface • Bond to themselves to form a permanent bond • Useful when adding outriggers, accessories or reinforcing strips
Coated • Allows material to temporary bond when warm • Once cool the bond is not permanent • Coating may be removed to create a permanent bond with spirits or by safely scratching the splint surface • Often easier to handle • If making a long term splint, coated materials may be preferable as they are easier to clean (less porous)
Minimum Moderate MaximumAchieve intimate fit Achieve exact fit Achieve good fit
Very light handling required Moderate handling to pull and hold material in place Requires firm handling
Stretches easily Controlled stretch Controlled stretch
Highly comfortable Shapes easily Extremely strong & durable
Excellent drapability Ideal for larger splints
Different handling and performance properties are required for the varied caseloads and client groups that therapists work with.
In addition to the different properties below, all our Thermplastics are • latex free, • biodegradable • X-Ray translucent

5) Cleaning PowderBar Keepers Friend is a premium, powder-based cleanser. It has a non-bleach formula that can be used on stainless steel. It’s also great at removing rust and tarnishing, water stains and lime scale. The “secret” to BKF’s cleaning power is oxalic acid. Discovered by chance in 1882, by a chemist who noticed that his pot was clean-er after cooking rhubarb, the original formula still out-performs many modern cleaning products. 250g.

• Has a removable, adjustable aluminium support bar. • Available in regular and long length: both lengths restrict the
wrist to prevent unwanted flexion or extension, yet they allow unobstructed motion of the fingers and thumb.

This app is designed to expedite and enhance patient evaluations allowing results to be quickly repeated edited and saved.
For both the Jamar Smart and Jamar+, we’ve replaced the hydrau-lic system found in other dynamometers with a circuit board and electronic load sensors. This technological advancement gives you a more accurate tool to measure hand strength in clients with hand trauma and dysfunction. We also increased the durability of the dynamometers by eliminating all internal moving parts, and encasing the electronics in a sturdy aluminium body with a scratch-resistant UV coating. • The readout displays isometric grip force from 0 - 90kg. • Uses two AAA batteries (included)
Comes in a reusable storage container.

The aim of this workshop is to gain affinity with thermoplastic materials and to learn to fabricate splints.
SproFit oversees the organization, Mike and Ton Very Schreuders look after a very challenging and educational content of the workshop.
Important here is the relationship between theory and practice. You do not only learn about splint theory, you become familiar with thermoplastic materials, strapping and padding and you get to practice pattern making and fabricating splints.
You get to work a lot with your hands and this makes it a very pleasant experience!
SproFit has organized this theoretical and practical workshop for basic splinting for the past nine years.
