Hampshire GA Event Report: October 2016 It was another sell-out event, with over 122 enthusiastic A Level geography students, Hampshire geography teachers and branch members attending the Hampshire GA’s annual A Level Conference held at Peter Symonds College (Winchester) on Thursday 6 October. Attendees enjoyed two topical lectures on the night, the first of which was delivered by Professor Sybren Drijfhout (University of Southampton) who gave a talk on ‘Future Climate Projections (Greenhouse vs Icehouse)’. His talk was followed by a lecture from Professor Zoe Matthews (University of Southampton) who spoke on ‘Child Health, Maternal Health and the new Global Sustainable Development Goals, giving students’ a fascinating insight into her work with the World Health Organisation on the Millennium Development Goals, which specifically focussed on progress made under MDG4: Child Health and MDG5: Maternal Health and why maternal and child health are intrinsically linked. Prior to these two lectures students enjoyed a pizza tea and the opportunity to find out more about the geography degree courses being offered by Portsmouth, Southampton and Winchester Universities. Katie Penfold, a Lower Sixth geographer from Bay House School & Sixth Form (Gosport) shared her thoughts of the evening - “Tonight has raised my awareness in areas that I was unaware were so important and big in geography e.g. maternal mortality rates. I enjoyed exploring both topics that I didn’t really know much about before this evening”. Planned future events from the Hampshire GA branch include; a local round of the WorldWise Quiz (date tbc) and a new conference for GCSE geography pupils planned for 2017 (details and date tbc).
