Hello Oners,

The academic year is now past us, though I hope that your stay in Hall 1 still resonates with you. Here in Hall 1, we are all about fulfilling experiences, building camaraderie, forging common memories, and of course, to ‘lepak one corner ’ as One. Without a doubt, it has been a momentous year for us, serving up social and cultural events to the hall, both traditional and revised. We hope you had an awesome time at these events, infused with a dose of the 31st JCRC’s brand of novelty, like our food galore at this year ’s Hall 1 Night.

Oners do not only attend these events, as many amongst us have a hand in making such events possible. The success of these events is attributed to our very dedicated team of sub-committee members; we couldn’t have done it without you! Props to you guys for the time and effort put in! The hall, not just the JCRC, deeply appreciates your hard work.

Besides these events which spice up hall life, due mention should go to the people who give their all behind-the-scenes of the major Hall 1 events. Special thanks to all main-committee members, for engineering the best of Hall 1’s memories. Hall Production took us by storm with their refreshing musical: all the work of the charming cast and devoted crew brought the quirky script to life. UNIQKIDZ Children’s Camp not only touched the hearts of those very adorable children, I believe all us truly enjoyed this fruitful experience as well. Up next, we will be having our annual Freshmen Orientation Camp and Hall Dinner & Dance - the inspiring amount of commitment the members from both committees already serves as a testament to the awesome times we can anticipate! In addition, here is a shout-out to all resident performers of Hall 1; thank you for all the captivating performances!

To our very own UNISUS cheerleading team and UNIFIC dance crew, three cheers to you guys for bringing the house down with your stellar performances at this year ’s inter-hall competition. Your sheer passion and unparalleled dedication have long captured Oners’ hearts, and you will always be the pride of Hall 1!

As we near the end of our tenure, the 31st JCRC take a bow and give our sincerest thanks to each and every one of you. We hope that Oners continue to immerse themselves in and also fortify the Hall 1 experience. Thank you for all the love and support! Keep the Hall 1 spirit burning folks!

Freshmenorientationcamp

The Freshmen Orientation Camp is Hall One’s biggest event that signifies the start of each academic year. The theme for the camp was ‘Lost In Time’, where Oners were transported into different time periods, marked by a series of activities that took place over the five days.

Activities such as War Strategy Games, Task-Oriented Games, Confidence Walk, Urban Rush, Pool Games and Seniors vs. Juniors, challenged freshies to step out of their comfort zone and be orientated to hall life. Families also had quality bonding time ice skating at Jcube. At Sentosa, Seniors and freshies alike had a lot of fun enjoying the sun, sand and sea as they moved along the beaches to play games.

The camp concluded with a heart-warming closing ceremony on the last day. Each family put up a performance with a special dedication to their CGL, and prizes were given out to the Best Freshies (male: Chinhou; female: Huiqi), Best Family (Simpsons), Best Skit (Disney) and Best Cheer (Chipmunks).

Last September, Supper Hop was the final event organized by the Social Secretary of the 30th JCRC, whereby Oners travel out of NTU to various places in Singapore to have supper together. Buses were chartered to take them to these supper venues like Wah Chee Tze Char stall in Dover, Yong He Dou Jiang in Geylang, and Beauty World at Bukit Timah.

The hall residents had a fun time interacting with one another with a common joy that they shared – food. The event also served as a good opportunity for the seniors to get to know the freshmen and new residents of our hall better. Everyone was spontaneous and it had a great turnout. It was truly a satisfaction of our local supper food cravings!

hall d&d

The Hall Ball Committee is the last of the 4 to take the stage. Hall Ball being the first biggest event after Freshmen Orientation Camp, has been shaped towards the direction of being an opening chapter for the Freshmen, and a closing chapter for the Seniors of Hall 1.

As like the previous years, the main highlight of Hall Ball is the Pageant Contest, where the Four Families of Hall One each sends a male and a female representative to compete not just in glamour, but in wits too. Under the theme of “Saints & Sinners”, the idea of not judging a book by its cover is encouraged of the audience.

This year, a new item called the Clothes Crusade was initiated, whereby the paegant contestants proceeded outside of campus to experience a reality-tv style video-shoot. Together with other programmes such as the dual skits, the contestants were given more room to work and bond together.

The whole idea is to motivate both paegants and audience to value friendships more than competition and the Hall Ball Committee 2012 hopes that we left a wonderful impression in our friends and families of Hall One.

blocksupper

As we all know, chancing upon your friends and neighbours along corridors or even across blocks is very common in Hall One and with more interaction, Hall One can be made a happier place to live in!

Held near the start of the semester, Block Supper is a venue for block residents to mingle and find out more about their neighbours over supper and games! Seniors meet freshies, international students meet the locals, and respective Block Representatives were introduced during this supper.

While feasting on local food such as Mee Goreng, Spring Roll, Curry Samosa and Ice Jelly with Cocktail, the locals share with the international students on local favourites and traditional food customs. Besides, there were card games such as ‘Bang’ and ‘Uglydoll’ to break the ice amongst residents.

Our annual block supper is held in hope that the traditional kampung spirit in Hall One will remain for the years to come. With more bondings sessions like that, Oners will be drawn closer together and Hall One will be remembered as a place called Home.

The delightful memories of eating mooncakes, playing sparklers and lanterns is one you can never forget when growing up. In Hall One, we bring this beautiful memory back to you with a blast, allowing you to relieve your childhood days once more!

We had different performances lined up, from our very own hall Jam band, to witty skits by our CGLS and not forgetting very

our dance crew UNIFIC! Plus, the traditional games played were those that ignite our memories - making lanterns out of pomelos, throwing good old fang bao and silly Chinese song charades.

To wrap up the exciting activities, we had fun with sparkler rockets and paper lanterns! As we celebrate the beautiful culture of Hall one, we foster new bonds, we strengthen relationships, and most importantly, we will never forget the fun time spent together!

Voilá-ween is an annual Hall 1 talent time showcase that is held in conjunction with Halloween celebration. Residents have the chance to dress up in outrageous spooky costumes while allowing the others to soak into the ambience of the event as they go for some ‘trick-or-treating’.

The highlights for this event were the various performances prepared by the hall talents, ranging from vocals and instruments, to a dance item. Adding a fresh tinge to the event, a team that called themselves G6, prepared an acapella item which later clinched the top prize for this year ’s talent time.

The decor of the whole event was revamped, adding more settings for residents to take pictures, as well as enhancing the Halloween mood for the night. Adding the spice in Voila-ween 2012, a new segment called “Voila-ween Next Top Model” was appended into the programme, where 4 volunteers are dressed up in the most creative way with accessories that were provided and to strut on a runway, showcasing what were on them.

The finale of the event was a performance by our very own Hall’s cheerleading team, Unisus, which ended Voila-ween 2012 on a high note. The residents enjoyed the performances lined up for them, as well as the performers, who had a great time creating smiles, joy and laughter for their friends.

Hall 1 Sports has pride itself as one which values learning and enjoying more than competition and results. We hope to have every resident push their boundaries and pick up a new sport which they’ve always been interested in. Our captains and managers have put in their best effort to conduct training in such a way that beginners are welcomed to have fun together.

Plagued with troubles such as the lack of talent pool and numbers in our hall, we were at an obvious disadvantage at the games. While the results are not pleasing, the spirit of our sportsmen is extremely commendable. Our soccer guys made in to the Semi-finals and our water polo boys made it to the quarter finals, both of which were large improvements from the previous year. These results have been the product of lots of hard work and tough training sessions and we are definitely proud of them!

As the season comes to an end, we would like to take this opportunity to thank all players and supporters during our IHG period and would love to welcome you all back once more next year, again encouraging you all to pick up a new sport. Every new year is a new experience so step out of your comfort zone and work it out!

Hall Uniqkidz Children’s Camp is organized annually, during the December holidays, by the Children’s Camp main committee. This season, the committee is privileged to work with Infant Jesus Homes and Children’s Centre (IJHCC) for the camp.

‘Uniqkidz’ illustrates the belief that every child is special and unique, with the aim of guiding underprivileged children in discovering their potentials and appreciating themselves as the deserving and unique individual that they are.

Through exposure to interactive learning experiences and activities - team building games and educational excursion to Marina Barrage, camp volunteers work hand in hand with the organizing committee to encourage self-confidence and build self-esteem in the children. The children are treated to a finale, completed with songs and performances put up by their friends and fellow campers.

Uniqkidz Children’s Camp is truly one in which the fine execution underscored the detailed planning behind its success in touching the hearts of both the children and the volunteers.

IHCC stands for Inter- Hall Cheerleading Competition. Hall One Unisus team is widely known in the NTU and Singapore Cheerleading community as one of the most outstanding teams among the 16 halls, as Unisus never fails to impress the audience with its performances during HOCC annually. This year, they have once again proved their prowess, and did Hall one proud by clinching 2nd place in the competition, furthermore achieving an All-Stunts-Up once again in history of Unisus.

Valentine’s Day is a season of love and friendship. Floral arch, giant helium balloons, rose petals strewn all over the floor, these decorations created the perfect ambience for the event. The romantic atmosphere turned into a lovely photo spot for residents as they enjoyed the line up of exciting programmes with delicious “twelve cupcakes”.

We were on the hunt for our Best Couple, Best Bachelor and Bachelorette at the event. Hall couples were gathered to reveal each other ’s greatest secrets. Singles were also given the chance to strut their stuff in the Best Bachelor and Bachelorette contests. Many of them participated actively when called on stage to complete ridiculous tasks like styling hair for the male parties and doing makeup for the female parties. The contests ended with exciting giveaways to the spontaneous participants.

Besides games, there were music and dance performances too. Couples from hall one played musical instruments as they sing their favourite love songs. Guest performers from the Dance Sport Academy presented an impressive item on Latin dance. These splendid performances were coupled with pizzas and valentine-themed chocolates. The event ended with much laughter as residents mingle around the food table and conversations sparked into some seriously mind-blowing gossips.

The Lunar New Year is the time of the year where everybody get together with their loved ones to celebrate this joyous occasion. In this year ’s Lunar New Year celebration, a Carnival was carried out instead of the ordinary celebration. The event was kicked off by a spectacular lion dance performance from NTU’s Lion Dance Club, setting the festive mood as well as the familial camaraderie which was very much enjoyed by those who were present for the event.

The residents then get to enjoy the traditional Lo Hei throws, enhancing the spirit of togetherness in this delightful festive. The highlight of the celebration was the carnival games and the sumptuous buffet dinner. Tokens won from the carnival games were exchanged for New Year goodies and titbits such as potato chips, sweets, chocolate, and Bak Kwa. Residents also stand to win lucky draw prizes with the tokens collected from playing the station games.

Following the games, residents get to enjoy a spectacular performances by our hall’s very own Wushu Artist and the winner of Hall One’s Talent Time 2012. Ending the event on a high note, a lucky draw was conducted and residents gathered to take group photos with the beautiful decorations prepared by the LNY committee.

The theme for the dance competition held during Hall Olympiad Closing Ceremony 2013 was “Kaleidoscope”. A Kaleidoscope gives a view of continuous changing pattern. It is the flux of moving shapes and colours. It is the expression of creative rhythms. The dynamism of the theme gives dancers the freedom of presenting what they want their audience to see through their own definition of the kaleidoscope.

When looking through the glass of myriads, that oner saw the outburst of christmas lights!Tis’ the season to be jolly~ Unific went for the Christmas theme this year and remained victorious with the title of first runner up! As we all know, Unific has never failed to touch the crowds with their passion and synchronic movement on stage. With their enthusiasm for dance, winning is never the main goal for them. To do up a good performance and to bring the audience enjoyment and memorable moments are what they continuously seek for.

“Unific is a family where no one gets left behind. It is not only 100% hard work, but a 100% heart work and passion! We strongly believe in having good work ethics and to use our passion for dance as an outlet to touch the hearts of every individual. Through each year, we strive to push ourselves beyond our boundaries, to grow together as a team, and to create something that is stage-worthy. 1% talent, 99% passion; Unific!

One of the largest performing group of Hall One, Hall Production is an annual event that draws all hall residents out of NTU for a spectacular 1.5 hours show. This year is no different, with our original script, music, live band and talented cast. Hall Production is about friendship, bonding and creating new experiences with different people. A committee brought together through laughter, joy, tears and months of tough practices leading up to the performance.

Our story this year is set in the 16th century English mining town, Berrytown. It depicts the return of 2 siblings from the main city after their studies. Berrytown’s mining trade has been declining over the years with the rapid depletion of gold ores. William and Wendy Huckleberry are determined to revive their town after the discovery of new valuable ores deposit.

With their skills and knowledge, they introduced various changes around the town and significant improvements can be seen. But is blood always thicker than water? Will a small taste of success make them turn their backs on their morals, values…. Or even family? Ultimately, great success comes with grave sacrifices. The question is “How much?”

Night Cycling is an event held annually during the recess week., in which Oners get to shed some fats while spending quality time with their families! This year, we rode through some of Singapore’s newly opened cycling paths, namely the Marina Barrage Bridge and the path at Gardens by the Bay. Some of these venues were really scenic views and so, while cycling we take every chance to camwhore! The intense exercise ended with a nice supper at Simpang Bedok and everyone returned to our start point at East Coast Park.

While cycling through the night is a relatively new experience to some of us, the companion of our families riding next to us is what makes the journey so special and memorable. We know that life’s hard, but keep on paddling Oners! Because… we will look out for you when you’re lost!

alumni dinner

Hall One Alumni Homecoming Dinner is an annual reunion of graduating students and alumni of Hall One in the spirit of fellowship. It seeks to strengthen ties between alumni, existing students and the university and it forms the platform for attendees to build and maintain amiable, long-lasting friendships with one another.

This year, it was held at Colonial@Scotts with the theme of Masquerade. Guests were advised to dress to the theme to stand a chance to win the Best-Dressed award of the evening. A video/photo montage of the past year ’s events was screened to kickstart the evening, followed by Senior Hall Fellow Prof Harianto’s address to the alumni and graduating students. The video allowed guests to catch up with what has been happening in hall, and to highlight the hall’s achievements in the year. Apart from a buffet spread at the dinner, there

were engaging games and entertaining song performances by our very own talents from Hall One. The performances featured our reigning Hall King Wong Yang and our previous Hall Princess Natalie Koh in the first set of songs, the singing duo from Block 16 - Nic and Dalton, as well as the acapella group of the year - G5, consisting of Kay Aik, Yi Yong, Dalton, Jia Ning and Jian Hui.

Not to be forgotten at the event is the Lucky Draw. Between the games and performances, some prizes were won when guests participated in our mini games - popping the balloon to find a note indicating the prize for instance. However, the the highlight of the evening took place at the end of the night - the much anticipated final Lucky Draw for the top three prizes, with the top prize of iPad mini. Under the envy of every other ticketed guest was an alumnus who managed to walk away with the iPad mini that evening, not without having to appease the crowd by crooning a tune of course. ;)

Hall Dinner is an annual event that all Hall Oners will be looking forward to. Held at Nanyang Executive Centre, the comfortable dinner setting encourages both our local and international residents to attend. It is much like a closing dinner akin to how Freshmen Welcome Dinner was like an opening dinner for them.

hall dinner

Themed ‘The Journey’, Hall Dinner 2013 promised to bring all Oners down the memory lane as they recollect on past hall events. This is done over sumptuous buffet dinner, games, and a series of performances by our very own talented residents. It must have been nostalgic right from the start, with the function hall decorated with photos frames, shirts, banners and props synonymous to the journey of events that Oners went through. Attendees also received an exclusive hall one tee keychain to commemorate this occasion.

The main highlight of the event was the award presentations to residents whom have excelled for the inter-hall games, and to residents whom have made significant contributions to hall over the academic year. Of course, another highlight would be the 15 great lucky draw prizes given out during the event, with every ticket holder eagerly anticipating to be the next owner of the grand prize – the iPad Mini.

Ending off with a video, this 10-minute clip recapitulated on all the events, games and activities participated by us Oners. It summed up the entire academic year of activities organised, participated and supported by all Hall Oners. And so goes the song…‘As we go on, we remember…’ What an eventful year it has been for Oners, for it is Oners who made these events memorable.

While serving as a finale to round up an academic year of hall events, Hall 1 Night aims to bring the hall together to mingle, have fun, and de-stress right before the students gear up for exams. Along with the distribution of exam welfare goodie bags, its purpose is to break free from the mundane lifestyle of studying, for residents to interact with each other.

Games such as the Street Basketball machines, Bishi Bashi and Taiko Drum Master provided endless supply of fun. Rare treats such as Garrett Popcorn and Lao Ban beancurd were also served at intervals to ensure residents enjoy a constant supply of welfare.

The dunking machine was introduced for the first time in hall, much to the delight of hall residents whom enjoyed the scene of victims dropping into the pool. Indeed, takeaways from the event goes beyond physical exam welfare items! With a whole night of welfare, everyone will be recharged for the battle!

Hi Chipmunks! Dinner today at 630pm. Lets meet at busstop!! This phrase has been stuck in my head for the entire year, I hope it doesn’t haunt you everyday. I just want to thank every single one of you for putting in so much effort in joining the events together as a family, thus keeping the family together despite the hectic assignment deadlines, quizzes and projects.

Being in hall one as a CGL has been really a enriching yet painful experience. From organising outings, crossdressing in MAF and rece for night cycling... Sometimes I really wonder why i took up this position. Thanks to the support from you, be it short “thank you” messages or time and effort to help organise outings and supper, it has made my job of serving you a great joy. Because of the enthusiastic and helpful brothers and sisters I have in this chipmunks family, I am proud to be in this family. I know surely that chippies will always be there and watch my back!

Once again, Thank you so much and I hope that we can stay close as good friends even after we graduate and embark on the next phase of our lives. All the best for your exams and quote of the day: Friendship is Love without wings ~ Lord Byron. See you around=)

chipmunks-Koh Yong Jing <3

garfios- Liang Guo Nian <3

Joining Garfios could well be the one of the best few joyous moments I have in NTU. I could still remember the first day of FOC where everyone exchanged awkward greetings. We were shy but never passive in getting to know each other. We never needed to put in extra effort to be comfortable with each other because our seniors made the FOC a wonderful and unforgettable experience for us.

Being a part of Garfios really allows me to appreciate and embrace the culture of Hall One. Every family has their own unique identity but I believe Garfios’ is a better representation of Hall One’s motto - One Above All. What Garfios brought to Hall One was not only athletes or leaders but also a giant cohesive unit that overcomes all problems together. We do things with ease but never compensating on efficiency. Lepak became our identity and we endorse it even till today.

To my fellow Lepak family members, I am grateful to know each and every one of you. Despite the hectic study schedules and various commitments, we still make time for each other. We are gracious to each other ’s flaws, notably mine and I have faith in everyone to continue and strengthen these bonds beyond graduation and further on. A big THANK YOU to you guys for lighting up my life!

Message from CGLs

Page 29: Hall One Publication 2012-2013

Well, what do I have to say about being a CGL. Saying the word CGL, the words “suay, sai kang” comes to mind. Calling the family down for events and dinner, planning outings, birthdays etc, it certainly does not seem like a fun job to take up. Especially during this semester when the school load is much heavier, it ’s really hard trying not to sacrifice one for the other on top of hall activities.

Despite that, I am really honoured to be given the opportunity to be Disney’s CGL. Through these 2 semesters, I can tell that even though we may not have the highest attendance for hall events, we will be there for each other whenever we need it. Nothing rewards and makes me more motivated to carry on as a CGL than my fellow freshies. Through simple actions of finding me for dinner to asking me for any help, they are my pillars of support and I know that they will follow me through anything I need their help. (I HOPE SO).

Oh, and definitely not forgetting my seniors. When I feel stressed up or frustrated, I’ll go have a short chat with them. They know how I feel and will sit down, listen to my complains, and we end up extending the night by digressing and gossiping. Others may not see it, but I know that they are helping me “backstage” in one way or another.Although I do not know how well I am doing as a CGL, it is really enjoyable to be in Disney with everyone. I hope that everyone enjoyed 2012/13 with me as your CGL, and here’s to another year ahead together!

To be able to stay in hall, to experience hall stay has always been apart my ‘must-haves’ in university. It is truly delighting to see how strangers, freshmen and seniors, have evolved to become friends, forging great friendship to start hanging out together going for supper, playing ‘UGLY DOLL’, ‘UNO STACKO’, ‘SAN GUO SHA’, in the middle of the night; going for hall events together; and for some, from turning from strangers to couples. It has been a wonderful experience to be given the opportunity to become the Chief Group Leader (CGL) in hall one, as a bridging and contact point between seniors and juniors. It was a pleasure to see how Simpsons Seniors and Oners (Hall One Residents), are connected to hall; joining hall activities such as Supper Hop and Hall Dinner & Dance even though they have already graduated or do not currently stay in hall. It was also heartening to see seniors and juniors coming down for hall activities to have fun and win prizes from hall activities. As of today, I am proud that, we Simpsons, have bagged an awesome, multi-purpose grilling pan and a bottle of dessert wine from orientation, a box of tea leaves (still sitting in my room) from Mid-Autumn Festival, giant packets of snacks from Violaween and several other events.

To the graduatied seniors, who will soon become the legends of Hall One, I hope you guys do not forget us and continue to come back and join us for hall events in future! To our seniors, I would like to thank you guys for making hall stay enjoyable to me as well as to the other Oners, showing us how to walk from Ah Fang and extension for dinner and supper, teaching us how to make firecrackers rockets during Mid-Autmn Festival and flying kite at Marina Barrage etc. To my batch of Simpsons that likes to improvise cheers from camps, I hope you guys had an amazing year staying in hall, undeterred from attracting underaged girls and becoming the ‘pokemon’ in times of crisis. I wish for all to become less ‘bimbz’ in future, no more ‘BiBimBap Society ’ or ‘Bimbsons’, all to become ‘high level’! Let’s look forward to the coming orientation to forge friendships, drink our homemade Simpsons watermelon juice, do Ar-de-gee and have fun. Underwear up guys!

Rundown facilities, non-airconditioned rooms and weekly toilet scrubs, hall one seems to resemble a refuce camp, a place to stay after long hours of battling in school. That was my first impression. A very misleading and wrong impression indeed. But it all changes when you meet amazing people in Hall, and can talk to awesome toilet mates when you get bored and alone in your own room.
