statistical release For immediate release May 9, 1962 H.4.2 CONDITION OF WEEKLY REPORTING MEMBER BAJPCS Hf LEADING CITIES The condition statement of weekly reporting member banks in leading cities shows the following principal changes for the week ended May 2: Increases of $1,432 million in loans adjusted, $2,151 million in U. S. Government demand deposits, and $501 million in demand deposits credited to domestic commercial banks, and a decrease of $1,250 million in demand deposits adjusted. Commercial and industrial loans increased a net of $159 million; during the comparable week a year ago, these loans increased $170 million. Loans to brokers and dealers for purchasing or carrying U.S. Government securities increased $505 million, and their loans for purchasing or carrying "other" securities increased $233 million. Loans to sales and personal financing institutions increased $206 million, as compared with an increase of $86 million during the similar week in 1961. Real estate loans increased $34 million. "Other" loans increased $309 million largely reflecting a sale of Export-Import Bank participation certificates to commercial banks. Holdings of Treasury bills by weekly reporting member banks decreased $163 million, but the combined total of Treasury notes and U . S . Government bonds increased $130 million. Demand deposits adjusted decreased $483 million i n New York City, $231 million in the San Francisco District, $1%2 million in the Chicago District, $93 million in the St. Louis District, $90 million in the Richmond D i s t r i c t , $88 mil- lion in the Cleveland District, and $85 million in the Kansas City District. Savings deposits increased $34 million and "other" time deposits of individuals, partnerships, and corporations increased $58 million. Borrowings of weekly reporting member banks from Federal Reserve Banks decreased $230 million but borrowings from others increased $122 million.
