AIPH to IdentifyInternational Vision forOrnamental HorticultureThe International Association ofHorticultural Producers (AIPH)has launched a three yearproject with the aim ofidentifying an internationalvision for the ornamentalhorticulture industry.

AIPH Secretary General,Tim Briercliffe comments:“Globalisation has had a majorimpact on the ornamentalhorticulture industry. We haveseen the traditional markets forflowers and plants slow downwhile at the same timeproduction and consumption offlowers and plants indeveloping countries hasincreased rapidly both to exportto developed countries and tomeet the growing demands oftheir own national markets. Itseems that the power-base forthe production and market forornamentals is changing. Thisbrings with it challenges andopportunities for growers andthe whole supply chain. Thisproject has been developed tounderstand these challenges, forecast future changes in thestructure of the industry and toidentify opportunities to growthe overall market.”

Chairman of the projectSteering Group and AIPHPresident, Bernard Oosteromcomments: “AIPH is uniquelypositioned to facilitate thecollation and analysis ofindustry data, information(quantitative and qualitative)and have the experiencethrough our internationalnetwork of grower associationsaround the globe. We invite allthose with an interest in thiswork, wherever they are in theworld and whether they haveany links to AIPH or not, tobecome a part of the network

being developed to identifythis vision”.

The project is funded by theformer Dutch Product Board.Information and data collectioncommenced with facilitateddiscussion sessions both at theAIPH Annual Congress in 2015and during IPM Essen inJanuary 2016. This willcontinue during the AIPHSpring Meeting in Vancouver,Canada on 15 March 2016.

Organisations participatingcommit to sharing what theyknow and learning from eachother as together they shape thevision for the future. Followingresearch the project hasidentified a top 10 list ofcountries which will be studiedin more depth. These countrieshave been identified as thoselikely to present the biggestopportunities for the industry inthe coming years.

Grow Your OwnMuscat - By 2050 the planetwill have two billion extramouths to feed. But populationgrowth is not the only reasonwe will need to grow morefood. The growth of the middleclass, particularly in emergingeconomies, is driving demandfor meat, eggs and dairy, increasing pressure to growmore corn and soybeans to feedmore cattle and poultry.

“If these trends continue,we'll have to double the amountof crops we grow by 2050.”explained Dr. Nadiya Al Saady,Executive Director, Oman

Animal & Plant GeneticResources Center (OAPGRC)and organizer of the monthlyScience Café initiative.

In response to thesedevelopments, and supported byOman LNG, OAPGRC recentlyheld a Science Café session atthe Sultan Qaboos UniversityFarm on growing fruit andvegetables at home.

“Science Café attendeeswere shown how to grow theirown fresh produce organically,no matter what skill level orhow much space they haveavailable,” remarked theOAPGRC Executive Director.

'Organic Gardening - Time toGrow' was a 90 minute crashcourse in urban agriculture, designed specifically toencourage people to think moreabout diet, health and theenvironment. It also covered thebasics of how to grow organicedibles in the garden, patio, balcony or window-box. Thefocus was on what is easy togrow, how to choose what toplant and how to keep plantsalive and thriving.

Approximately 54% of theworld's population now live incities, a number that ispredicted to grow to 70% by2050. More food is shippedthan ever before, with mosttraveling an average of 2,400 -4,000 kilometres from farm toplate. Not only does shippingadd to pollution, the 7-10 daysproduce spends in transit resultsin spoilage waste and, as someevidence shows, decreased tasteand nutrition.

“By growing what we neednear where we live, wedecrease the food kilometersassociated with long-distancetransportation. We also get thefreshest produce money canbuy, and we're encouraged toeat in season,” explained

Padma Shri Dr. Bhavarlal H Jain, Founderof Jain Group, Jalgaon, passes awayWith immense grief, we inform you ofthe passing away of Jain IrrigationFounder Chairman Shri BhavarlalHiralal Jain (Age 79) on 25th Feb2016 after a brief illness, at a hospitalin Mumbai.

A man of small ideas which createdbig revolutions, he practiced what hepreached and built his entire businesson a foundation of inclusiveness andsustainability over the last fivedecades.

He believed every small farmer isan entrepreneur and must earn a higherincome with dignity. He toiled hard toensure this to over five millionfarmers. He was a visionary andkarmayogi. The company takes apledge to walk on the path envisagedby him forever. The state funeral and cremation ceremony took place at JainHills, Jalgaon at 3 pm on Saturday, the 27th February 2016.

The small town entrepreneur who established a billion dollar ruralmultinational corporation. A spirited champion of the small farmer whom hesaw toiling nobly in the face of all adversity. A committed environmentalist andcompassionate social worker - is no more!

How can mere words describe this multifaceted man? A son of the soil, whoby sheer dint of hard work, bravely facing penury, rose to head the world'ssecond largest drip irrigation company. Whose pioneering work in the farmingsector is unparalleled by any single individual in this country's history. Whobrought the latest and most relevant technology to the small and marginalfarmers and always ensured that all his business were done ethically and with aconscience. That whatever technology was brought, could be adapted for smallfarm holdings. Further, he constantly innovated with these technologies to makethem affordable and within their reach.

A man who never shied away from work, a man who genuinely believed thatthere was nothing better than work. Not doing anything was anathema to him. Ifit was not work in the JISL factory, or the R&D farm, then it was social work.Education was very close to his heart. He believed in nurturing the young withgood education and sound values. Values that have stood the test of time, but areslowly and surely being eroded by the influence of Western culture on our youth.

The residential school, Anubhuti that he established in Jalgaon, followsmodern teaching methods, curriculum and offers an international quality ofeducation, but retains many Indian customs & values seen in our Gurukuls.

He firmly believed that economic conditions should not prevent deservingchildren from getting a good education. This prompted him to start anotherschool for children whose parents live below the poverty line. Today hundredsof bright youngsters, provided with free education, books, wholesome mealsand all other necessities, bear witness to the faith he reposed in them and areblooming into bright young citizens of tomorrow.

whose biennial meeting is being heldin Africa for the first time.

Dialogues over the week-longmeeting in Morocco will help FAO, itsmember countries and industryrepresentatives understand new trends, opportunities and challenges in thefishing sector, fostering thedevelopment of strategies that can "bestposition developing countries todevelop their fisheries sectors in asustainable manner and to maximizetheir economic benefit from the growthwe expect to witness," Lem said.

Ministers are also poised to agree inAgadir on FAO's proposed technicalguidelines for catch documentationschemes, a set of documents testifyingto the legal origin of the catch, facilitating traceability of the productthroughout the supply chain. This couldbecome an important tool in curbingillegal fishing, a goal mandated by theUnited Nations General Assembly.

How bees can help raise foodsecurity of smallholders What do cucumbers, mustard, almondsand alfalfa have in common? On thesurface very little. But there is onething they share: they all owe theirexistence to the service of bees.

For centuries, this tiny striped helperhas labored the world's fields withoutwinning much recognition for its manycontributions to food production. Wildbees, in particular, seemed doomed toslog in the shadow of their morepopular cousin - the honeybee - whoseday job of producing golden nectar hasbeen far more visible and celebrated.

But bees of all stripes are finallygetting their moment in the sun withthe publication of a paper thatquantifies, for the first time, just howmuch our crop yields depend on thework of pollinators who unknowinglyfertilize plants as they move fromflower to flower.

And in doing so, they may have akey role to play in improving theproduction of some 2 billionsmallholder farmers worldwide andensuring the food security and nutritionof the world's growing population.

VIV MEA has farexceeded expectationsin its first edition as

the new regional trade fairfrom VIV worldwide to servethe poultry, dairy andaquaculture industries from theMiddle East and Africa toTurkey, Iran and the countriesof South-Central Asia.

Held in the United ArabEmirates from 15 - 17 February2016, the inaugural VIV MEArecorded an audited total of6,336 visits by people from 109countries to meet exhibitorsfrom more than 279 companiesat the Abu Dhabi NationalExhibition Centre.

VIV worldwide manager

Ruwan Berculo of organizerVNU Exhibitions says: “Whenwe announced the launch ofVIV MEA we said we expectedthe first show to haveapproximately 200 exhibitorsfrom all parts of the world, presenting their products andservices to about 4,000 of theregion's top decision-makersand buyers. We have beenproved right about the globalorigins of the exhibitingcompanies and about the highquality of the visitors, but thesize of the attendance has beenmuch more than we could askfor an event making its debut. This also shows in the highpreliminary satisfactory rates:

visitors score VIV MEA 2016with an 7.8 and exhibitors ratethe show with an 8.

“It has been a major vote ofconfidence from the people ofthe animal protein industries inthe region, who have quiteclearly welcomed VIV MEAwith great pride as a regionalshow that has also instantlybecome a major internationalhub. Despite the politicalinstability and turbulence insome areas of the Middle Eastand the current economicuncertainties in the regioncaused by low oil prices, theleading food producers havedemonstrated by theirattendance in Abu Dhabi that

they remain determined to lookahead and inform themselvesabout the latest innovative andadvanced techniques fromaround the world.

“In addition, the undoubtedsuccess of VIV MEA is atestament to the family feelingbetween the industry, ourorganization and the buyers andsellers of the businessinternationally that we have alljoined hands together in creatingsuch an important new event.”

Approximately 80% ofvisitors came from outside theUAE, Berculo reports. Theyrepresented an excellent spreadof countries covering theMiddle East, considerable partsof Africa and locations in andaround India. Numbers fromindividual countries in thenorthern areas of the Africancontinent were especiallystrong for places such Egypt,Sudan and Nigeria. Of course, many other visitors arrived atthe UAE venue for the showfrom the neighbouring Gulfstates and Saudi Arabia.

“Almost all of the countriesin the Middle East and NorthAfrica already hold their ownlocal show on agriculture oranimal production, yet VIVMEA 2016 has managed toattract business leaders fromthroughout the region becauseof its special mix of globalsuppliers, innovation andinformation,” Ruwan Berculocomments. “The success of ourshow was helped further byhaving an accompanyingconference programme of aconsiderably higher qualitythan would be found normallyat more local events.

“It gained, too, from beingco-located at the ADNECexhibition centre with theGlobal Forum for Innovationsin Agriculture. Visitors from

both sides took the opportunityto look at the co-located events,as a way of adding even morevalue to their time spent in AbuDhabi. These visits are inaddition to the 6,336 originalVIV MEA visits.

“Another extremely positiveaspect for the first VIV MEAhas been that its timing hascoincided with the recentopening of more flexibleinternational tradingrelationships with Iran. Wewere visited by several hundredIranian poultry and feedproducers who confirmed thatthe new business environmentmeans they will want to investand grow.”

VIV MEA delivered fully onits promise to be a niche animalproteins event for all industryleaders with a strong emphasison poultry meat and eggs, butalso offering an extendedcoverage into dairy milkproduction and aquatic farming.Visitors and exhibitors havealready suggested how future

editions of the event might beenlarged, such as by having anincreased focus on the added-value downstream areas offurther processing, marketing, branding and product safety.

“VIV MEA returns in earlyFebruary of 2018,” Berculoconfirms. “As a consequence,we now have an excellentshow to alternate with VIVAsia in Bangkok as a regionalhub platform taking placeevery two years.”

Al Saad is confident that thestrategic location of the event, supported by the advancedinfrastructure facilities, makesGFIA an ideal forum that enablesits participants to have a viableimpact on agricultural sector aswell as global food security.

From among 80 cutting-edgesolutions for sustainablefarming, the highlights includedmicro-chips designed for honeybees to conduct research ontheir rapidly decliningpopulation, drones used forplant disease detection andharvest management, self-watering desert greenhouses or

self-sterilizing and solar-energydriven tents for storing fruitsand vegetables.

A combination of globalexperts in agriculture solutionsparticipated in the show's two-day conference, “Game-changing innovations for foodsecurity” including businessleaders, NGOs, and policymakers who weighed in onsustainable farming.

During 32 dedicatedsessions, panellists discussedinnovation-friendlyenvironments needed forfarming businesses to succeedtoday, viable opportunities forcreative policy making andinnovative technologysolutions. While the sessionsdiffered in scope, the speakersunanimously concluded thatfarmers, business people, andgovernments have a

responsibility to drivecollaborative efforts to counterglobal hunger throughpioneering developments insustainable agriculture.

More than 250 internationaldelegates attended technicaltours at four sites in Dubai andAbu Dhabi the day after theconference.

The tours included: ModelFarm, showcasing latestvegetables cultivation practices;Masdar Institute of Science andTechnology, featuring cutting-edge aquaculture solutions; TheSustainable City - a communityfarm dedicated to sustainableurban horticulture; andInternational Centre for BiosalineAgriculture presenting researchfindings on quinoa, energy savinggreenhouses, desalinating waterinnovations, and droughtmonitoring technology.

The livestock industry iscommitted to producesafe, ample, and

affordable milk, meat and eggsof the highest quality. Diseaseprevention is the only way tokeep animals healthy. Buttreatment is inevitable fordiseased animals. Antibioticsshould be used appropriately toprevent residues from occurringin milk or meat sent to market.Indiscriminate and irrational useof antibiotics in livestockwithout following withdrawalperiod may result in unexpectedresidues in food supplies andcould cause serious healthhazards to consumers. Themarketing of milk or meat withantibiotic residues, evenunintentionally, is illegal andcan result in financial andcriminal penalties. Preventingdrug contamination of milk andmeat is the responsibility ofevery farm. Drug residues canbe avoided by a well planneddrug use program.

Use of Antibiotic that mightresult in deposition of residuesin meat, milk and eggs must not

be permitted in food intendedfor human consumption. If useof antibiotics is necessary as inprevention and treatment ofanimal diseases, a withholdingperiod must be observed untilthe residues are negligible or nolonger detected. The use ofantibiotics to bring aboutimproved performance ingrowth and feed efficiency, tosynchronize or control ofreproductive cycle and breedingperformance also often lead toharmful residual effects.

The use of antimicrobials totreat food animals has thepotential to affect humanhealth through 2 mechanisms: 1. A small percentage of people

are violently allergic toantibiotics. Extremely smalldoses can be fatal. Otherpeople are sensitive to lowdrug concentrations thatcause mild reactions that canbe uncomfortable.

2. A continued low-level intakeof antibiotics from food couldresult in a build up ofantibiotic-resistant organisms

in humans who are notallergic to the drug. There are three classes of

animal drugs: Over-the Counter(OTC), Prescription (RX), andVeterinary Feed Directive(VFD). OTC drugs can be soldby any person or establishmentwithout a prescription of aveterinarian. Prescription drugscan only be sold to the publicby a veterinarian or pharmacist, and only with the writtenprescription of a veterinarian.VFD is a drug intended for usein or on feed, which is limitedby an approved application touse under the professionalsupervision of a licensedveterinarian. Currently, no VFDproducts are approved for use incattle. Any use of a drug notspecifically listed on the label iscalled “extra-label drug use”and is regulated by the Foodand Drug Administration(FDA). Using a prescription orover-the-counter drug in anextra-label manner is illegalunless it is specificallyrecommended under theguidance of a veterinarian.

ANIMAL HEALTH

ANTIBIOTIC RESIDUES- APOTENTIAL HEALTH HAZARD

By Dr Nimisha SijeshBVSc & AH, MVSc

Page 31: Gulf agriculture March-April 2016

Examples of extra-label drug use: 1. Changing the dose, such as

giving more medicine than islisted on the label.

2. Changing the route ofadministration e.g. instead ofgiving intravenous route, useintramuscular orsubcutaneous routes.

3. Changing the frequency ofuse i.e. changing number oftimes of administration.

4. Giving a drug to a differentproduction class of animal, such as giving medicine toyoung ones which areintended for adult animals.

5. Giving a drug for an indication(disease) not listed on the label.

6. Changing the withholdingtimes, such as not followingmilk or meat withholdingtime after giving drugs.

7. Changing the amount of drugper injection site, such asaltering the labelrecommendations. WHO and FAO establish

tolerances for a drug, pesticideor other chemical in therelevant tissues of foodproducing animals. Thetolerance is the tissueconcentration below, which amarker residue for the drug orchemical must fall in the targettissue before that animal edibletissues are considered safe forhuman consumption.

A withdrawal period is

established to safeguard humanfrom exposure of antibioticadded food. The withdrawaltime is the time required for theresidue of toxicological concernto reach safe concentration asdefined by tolerance. It is theinterval from the time an animalis removed from medicationuntil permitted time of slaughter.Heavy responsibility is placedon the veterinarian and livestockproducer to observe the periodfor a withdrawal of a drug priorto slaughter to assure that illegalconcentration of drug residue inmeat, milk and egg do not occur. 10-point plan for residueprevention “The Milk and Dairy BeefResidue Prevention Protocol 10-Point Plan” is a manualproduced by the Milk and DairyBeef Quality Assurance Center(www.dqacenter.org) designedfor use by dairy producers, veterinarians, and employees. The manual assists in theevaluation of current produc-tion practices and thedevelopment of a plan to preventresidues in milk and dairy beef. The 10 critical control points ofa milk and dairy beef residueprevention plan are:

1. Practice healthy herdmanagement.

2. Establish a validveterinarian/client/ patientrelationship (VCPR).

3. Use only FDA-approvedover the counter orprescription drugs with aveterinarian's guidance.

4. Maintain milk quality. Foodsafety and quality begins onthe dairy.

5. Implement an effectivemastitis managementprogram.

6. Administer all drugs properlyand identify all treatedanimals.

7. Maintain and use propertreatment records on alltreated animals.

8. Use drug residue screeningtests.

9. Implement employee/familyawareness of proper drug useto avoid marketing adulteratedmilk and dairy beef.

10. Complete the milk anddairy beef residue preventionprotocol annually.
