Nutrimite™: key tosuccessful IPM inMoroccan rosesThe experience of Exmora, alarge ornamental grower fromSkhirat on the Moroccanwestcoast, demonstrates thatBiobest's NutrimiteTM is a gamechanger also under North-African growing conditions. Asolid powerboost to thepredatory mite A. swirskii, that's what Exmora needed tofinally declare victory onwhitefly and other pests. JulienBennani, Exmora's generalmanager explains how Biobesthelped his company achievebetter and more economicpest control than frequentpesticide sprays.

Exmora grows around 4 haof ornamentals crops, mainlyin greenhouses. Rose andGerbera are the main crops andexports to Europe areimportant. “Whiteflies used tobe a major problem” saysJulien “and we sprayed a lot ofpesticides, alternating varioustypes of products. However, atthe end of the growing season,we always ended up with hugewhitefly populations. Due togrowing pesticide resistance, the problem was getting worseyear after year. We also hadproblems with thrips andspider mites.”

Four years ago, Julien calledupon Biobest to help setting upan Integrated Pest Management(IPM) strategy. Julien:“Together with Biobest'stechnical advisor Saida Bennajiwe initiated trials on roses. Weinitially tried differentcombinations of beneficials andnoticed an improvement in theearly season. Towards the endof the season, however, we stillran into problems. Last year, wetested a strategy based on a newBiobest product. We applied

NutrimiteTM to feed thepredatory mite Amblyseiusswirskii and combined thisfurther with sticky traps. Theresults of the trials wereoutstanding and today we treatall our roses this way.”

Saida Bennaji explains:“NutrimiteTM is 100% naturalfood supplement made from aspecial selection of pollen andis designed to stimulatebiological pest control. It helpsus reach higher numbers ofpredatory mites throughout thewhole season. With NutrimiteTM

we get the swirskii army wellestablished early on, evenbefore pests like whitefly andthrips arrive. This prevents thepests from spreading. Also, weare able to maintain a strongpopulation until the very end ofthe season.”

“The advantages go wellbeyond fewer chemicals andbetter pest control” says Julien.“Fewer chemical sprays alsomeans less labour and fewerdays during which we have torestrict access of our employeesto the greenhouse. It also meanswe gain in flexibility to easilyintegrate other beneficialorganisms such as Delphastusin our biocontrol program.Overall, our roses look muchhealthier and we achieve higherproduction.”

Mouna Ennehly, responsiblefor the company's IPM strategy:“I apply Nutrimite™ every twoweeks using a simple manualpump. I use 300 grams per ha.After introducing swirksiisachets, I initially sprayNutrimite™ low in the crop, close to the sachets. AfterwardsI also spray higher, to obtain agood distribution of the mites.”

A few weeks ago, Exmorainitiated a trial with thecombination of swirskii mitesand Nutrimite™ on Gerbera

flowers. Julien: “We hope we getthe same results as in our roses,so that we can also treat ourGerbera crop in the same way.”

EIMA Interntional: Move forcomponentsThe number of exhibitors set toarrive for EIMA Components, the specialized salon within thegreat agricultural mechanizationexposition in Bologna, isapproaching 800. Manufacturersfrom all parts of the world arepreparing for the event to put on

offer increasingly efficienttechnologies capable ofapplying decisive innovationsfor machinery and equipmentfor farming and rural lands.

The salon focused oncomponents, EIMAComponents, is looking forwardto a record-breaking edition. The specialized salon - a part ofthe EIMA Internationalagricultural mechanizationexposition scheduled forNovember 12 to 16 in theBologna Trade Fair center - hasalready reached an all-time highof over 800 manufacturingindustries signed up andconfirmed ahead of others nowput on a waiting list.

The 2012 edition drew 760manufacturers and incomparison to this figure, datareleased by the Events Officeof FederUnacoma, the ItalianAgricultural MachineryManufacturers Federation, responsible for the organizationof EIMA International, indicatea significant increase. Thisyear's salon will feature anexposition area of more than40,000 m2, 13% larger than thespace allocated for the 2012edition. Components will takeover Pavilions 15, 18, 18bisand 20 and areas in Pavilions21, 22, 26 e 29bis for thepresentation of an immensearray of mechanical parts, spare parts, accessories andelectronic devices accountingfor a total of 353 merchandisecategories brought in by theirmanufacturers from aroundthe globe.

United Kingdom. The salonwill also bring together suchnewly industrialized countriesas China, India and Turkey, allaiming to expand theirfootprints on internationalmarkets supplying themanufacturing industries aswell as for spare parts andaccessories produced directlyfor end-users.

Massimo Goldoni, presidentof FederUnacoma, said, “Out ofa total of 1,800 exhibitingindustries taking part in EIMAInternational, this means wewill have nearly 800 in thecomponents sector alone andthis is an indication of howimportant and vital thismechanical engineering sectoris and how farsighted it was toraise the profile of componentsby dedicating a specializedsalon to them within the greatBologna exposition.” MarcoAcerbi, responsible for theorganization of FederUnacomaevents, went on to affirm,“Moreover, components are afundamental factor forinnovation in the mechanicalengineering sector and thesuccess of EIMA Componentsconfirms the way in which thisreview is truly oriented towardsinnovation and trained on thegreat numbers of professionaloperators interested ineverything that can improve theperformance, reliability andsafety of machinery andequipment used for farming andall activities for themaintenance of rural lands.”

FederUnacoma: forms ateam in EuropeThe members of the board ofdirectors of the Italianfederation of agriculturalmachinery manufacturers metin Brussels with Italianmembers of the Parliament. The

national market crisis, lack of acoherent agriculturalmechanization policy, the riskof the relocation of the nationalindustry and the unsustainablecosts in enacting some EUdirectives were under focus atthe meeting. The attention ofthe MEPs is already trained onthe first dossier produced bythe Commission.

The crisis afflicting thedomestic agriculturalmachinery market in Italy iscausing serious repercussionson the system. The plunge insales of machinery andequipment down to an historiclow - tractors sold by the end ofthe year will not exceed 19,000units compared to nearlydouble that number registered

in France or Germany - isreducing the profits of themechanical engineeringindustry, eroding theproduction capabilities ofItalian agriculture andweakening the agriculturalmechanization districts withthe risk the relocation ofdomestic manufacturers to thecountries taking in theirexports to concentrate theirbusiness in the sector there.

This was the picturepainted by Massimo Goldoni, the FederUnacoma president, for a European Parliamentaudience held recently inBrussels attended by ItalianMEPs in the new legislature.Present for the hearing ofItalian MEPs were DavidBorrelli (M5S), Nicola Caputo(PD), and Lara Comi (FI),Nicola Danti (PD), ElisabettaGardini (FI), Giovanni La Via(NCD), Massimiliano Salini(NCD), Patrizia Toia (PD) andMarco Zullo (M5S).

Aided by members of theboard of directors representingthe eight associations in theirsectors in his federation,Goldoni emphasized the frontrank role played by the Italianagricultural mechanizationindustry and went on tounderscore serious worriesabout a progressive“disarmament” of thesemanufacturers on nationalterritory.

Conditions alreadycompromised by the sharpreduction of investments forthe purchase of machinery byfarming enterprises now rangeto the risk of a dramaticworsening with theapplication of EuropeanUnion norms on emissions ofspecialist tractors designed foroperations in orchards andvineyards, one of the products

strongly featured by theItalian industry.

The qualified federationexperts explained that usingtechnologies now available toinstall devices for therecirculation of exhaust gas onwhat are called these “narrowtrack tractors” for compliancewith the upcoming Phase IVrequirements would come as aninsurmountable obstacle from atechnical point of view andwould totally altering the narrowtractor type making it no longercapable of meeting the specialrequirements of operations infruit orchards and vineyards.

These federation expertswent on to affirm that unlessthe Commission steps in withmeasures to adopt and at leastextends the deadline for theapplication of the norm - nowset at 2017 for Phase IV with2020 tentatively set for theintroduction of Phase V - asubstantial part of the Italianindustry will inevitably bethrown out of the market.Goldoni made the point thatkeeping pace with a pieces ofEU legislation appearsincreasingly demanding andfrenetic, more and moredifficult, if one considers thatthere is the lack of specificresearch programs foragricultural mechanization and, above all, Italian enterprises aresubjected to unfair competitioncaused by counterfeiting bynumerous industries, especiallyby the emerging countries, andmany of these countries aresteadily flooding the Europeanmarket with machines whichdo not have the requisitesrequired by the EU.

The requests voiced byFederUnacoma and discussedin detail in direct dealings inBrussels attracted theunanimous attention of the

New Study Finds thatOrange Maize ImprovesVitamin A in ChildrenJust ahead of World Food Day,a study published in theAmerican Journal of ClinicalNutrition has established that'orange' vitamin A maizeincreases vitamin A storage inthe body. This maize has beenconventionally bred (non-GMO) to have higher levels ofbeta-carotene, a naturallyoccurring plant pigment thatthe body then converts intovitamin A.

Lack of sufficient vitamin Ablinds up to 500,000 childrenannually and increases the riskof death from disease (such asdiarrhea in children). Vitamin Adeficiency is widely prevalentin Sub-Saharan Africa. Foodsthat are good sources ofvitamin A, such as orangefruits, dark leafy vegetables, ormeat, are not always available,or may be too expensive insome regions. In many Africancountries, people eat largeamounts of staple foods likecassava or maize. For example,in Zambia, people eat up to apound of white maize daily. However, this white maizeprovides no beta-carotene.Switching to orange maize, which is rich in beta-carotene,could potentially providemaize-dependent populationswith up to half their dailyvitamin A needs.

In this controlled efficacystudy, children from the EasternProvince of Zambia wererandomly assigned to threefeeding groups and receivedeither white maize, orangemaize, or a daily vitamin Asupplement. After three months, both groups that received eitherthe orange maize or vitamin Asupplements showed significant

increases in their total bodystores of vitamin A, with nochanges observed in the groupthat received white maize.

Lead scientist SherryTanumihardjo said “we weresurprised to find that most ofthe children in this study

already had substantial stores ofvitamin A. We attribute this tothe success of fortifying sugarwith vitamin A, the provision ofvitamin A supplements toyoung children, and perhapsbetter diets. Yet, despite havingadequate vitamin A stores, we

still saw this store increase inchildren as a result of eating theorange maize. So, I'm confidentthat orange maize would beespecially effective inincreasing body stores ofvitamin A in populationssuffering from vitamin Adeficiency.” Unlike the form ofvitamin A found in supplementsand fortified foods, the bodyregulates conversion of beta-carotene into vitamin A, andconsuming high levels of beta-carotene is not harmful tohealth.

Several orange maizevarieties have been released bythe governments of Zambia andNigeria. In Zambia, HarvestPlus(http://www.harvestplus.org)has provided orange maize tomore than 10,000 farminghouseholds and is now workingwith the private sector with thegoal of reaching 100,000famers by 2015. According toEliab Simpungwe, HarvestPlusCountry Manager for Zambia,“the orange maize has beenembraced by consumers oncethey have had a chance to tasteit. When they also understandthe benefits of vitamin A in thediets they are all the moreenthusiastic about orangemaize.” The orange maizevarieties released are also highyielding, disease and virusresistant, and drought tolerant.

The Zambian Governmenthas officially recognizedbiofortification, which itincludes in the National Foodand Nutrition Strategic Plan forZambia 2011-2015. MusondaMofu, Acting ExecutiveDirector of the National Foodand Nutrition Commission inZambia and who was also onthe study team, said “there arestill many pockets wherevitamin A deficiency remains aproblem in Zambia. Food-based

approaches such as orangemaize can provide people-especially women and children-with a good portion of theirdaily vitamin A needs throughnshima or other traditionalfoods made from maize, that weZambians eat every day. For us,this is cost-effective and a safeapproach to improvingnutrition."

HarvestPlus and its partnershave developed anddisseminated otherconventionally bred crops toprovide needed vitamins andminerals in the diet. These arevitamin A cassava (DemocraticRepublic of Congo, Nigeria),vitamin A orange sweet potato(throughout Sub-SaharanAfrica) and iron beans(Democratic Republic ofCongo, Rwanda, Uganda).Zinc wheat and rice and ironpearl millet have been targetedto South Asia.

LODDER-ROOTSTOCKS was founded in1958 as a nursery with a wide-range-production of rootstocks for fruit-trees,

roses and ornamentals. Until now thespecialization came more and more only toROOTSTOCKS FOR FRUIT-TREES.

QUALITY-ROOTSTOCKS – MADE INGERMANY - are becoming more and moreinteresting/popular and well known also outsideof Germany.

The root-system of German FRUIT-TREE-ROOTSTOCKS is different, means betterbranched, to that of other countries. That makesregrowth in the fruit-tree-nursery easier evenunder not optimal conditions.

ROOTSTOCKS for APPLES, PEARS,PLUMS, CHERRIES, PEACHES, APRICOTSand NECTARINES are the rangeof our production by tissue-culture/in-vitro, stool-beds,hardwood-cuttings andseedlings. For special needsalso transplanted – to have anadditional better rooting-system.

Now LODDER-ROOTSTOCKS is in a bettersituation, since STEFFENLODDER is managing theproduction; so ERHARDLODDER (managing director)can take even more attention tothe over worldwide customersand their needs.

With its favorablegeographical conditions andclimate, Turkey is considered tobe one of the leading countriesin the world in the field of foodand agriculture. Therestructuring efforts that beganin the early 1980s, alongside aseries of reforms such asprivatizations and the reductionof trade barriers in theagriculture sector, resulted in adomestic market that is an

integral part of the worldeconomy today.

Turkey has a large andgrowing food and agricultureindustry that corresponds to 9percent of the overall grossvalue-added (GVA) and 25percent of the employment levelsin the country. Turkey is theworld leader in the production ofdried figs, hazelnuts,sultanas/raisins and driedapricots. It has the largest milkand dairy production in itsregion. In addition, Turkey hasan estimated total of 11,000 plantspecies, whereas the total numberof species in Europe is 11,500.

While Turkey is becomingone of the largest markets forbaked goods with its bread - animportant element of theTurkish diet - subsector dairyproducts including milk,

yoghurt, cheese, kefir and ayran(a drink made of yoghurt andwater) form an integral part ofthe traditional Turkish diet.Traditionally, artisan, unpackaged products havedominated the Turkish dairymarket, holding backwidespread growth but alsooffering potential to theinvestors.

Turkey offers a set ofenablers for potential agrofoodinvestors; the Turkishgovernment's supportmechanism includes favorableregulations, tax structure, competitive and low-cost laborforce and investmentincentives.

As part of its targets set forthe agriculture sector, by 2023Turkey aims to be among thetop five producers globally.

for plugging irrigationsprinklers and jets. Oneplugged sprinkler on a greenmeans no water. No waterquickly leads to brown greenswith dry stiff ground cover -not something a prestigiousgolf course and resort wants. Tokeep the course well watered,labor-intensive maintenanceprograms are required toremove plugged sprinklers, clean them out manually andthen reassemble.

Four Seasons began anirrigation improvementprogram several years ago byinstalling automatic filters onthe largest pump station (PumpStation #1) designed for 4000gpm. The 200-micron screensin these filters did a very goodjob of protecting the irrigationsprinklers that kept the greensgreen. But after a few years, thecoated carbon steel filter bodiesbegan to rust. Recently, theother two pump stations beganexperiencing increasedsuspended solids whichplugged sprinklers at anincreasing frequency. Thematuring ecology of the pondsystem was producing morephytoplankton (mostly algae)

thereby, increasing the totalsuspended solids concentrationof the raw water feeding thepump stations. Paul Earnest,Director of Golf at FourSeasons decided to take a pro-active stance and installfiltration on the remaining two

pump stations but wanted toeliminate the rust problemsexperienced previously. Mr.Earnest searched for a companyto provide a rustproof filtersystem that performed well andwas cost effective. His searchled him to Orival, Inc.

Filtration specialists at Orivalsuggested a water sample beanalyzed for total suspendedsolids (TSS) and particle sizedistribution on a mass basis. These analyses providedengineers at Orival additioninformation to design afiltration system specific to theconditions at Four Season.

Pump Station #2 has fourfixed speed pumps of 100 hp,75 hp, 50 hp and 25 hp. Themaximum design flow rate is2500 gpm at 120 psi. TwoOrival Model OR-08-PS-S allstainless steel automatic self-cleaning screen filters wereinstalled in the summer of 2006at Pump Station #2. Each filterwas equipped with a screenhaving a filtration degree of100-microns. The two filters aremounted in parallel on acommon manifold inside thepump house. See Figure 2. One

micro-processor basedcontroller handles all thefunctions of both filters. Adifferential pressure switch (DPswitch) senses when thepressure loss across the filters, due to screen plugging, reaches7 psi. The DP switch thensignals the controller to begin acleaning cycle. The first filtergoes through its completecleaning cycle in 8-10 seconds. The second filter then cleansitself in another 8-10 seconds. Each filter continues to filtereven during its cleaning cyclepreventing any interruption intotal water flow to the irrigationsystem. Brian Watson, IrrigationManager for Four Seasons said,“Since the filters were installed, there have been no pluggedsprinklers on that irrigationzone. I am very pleased withthe new filtration system.”Samples were collected before

and after the filters at PumpStation #2 and the resultsshowed a 67% reduction inTSS. The finer particles thatpassed through the filter and oninto the irrigation system weresmall enough to pass throughthe sprinkler nozzles with nothreat of clogging.

Pump Station #3 has adesign flow rate of 500 gpmfrom two 25 hp fixed speedpumps again at 120 psi. Asingle all stainless steel OrivalModel OR-06-PE-S filter with100-micron screen wasdesigned and installed at thissite. See Figure 3. The samemodel controller used at PumpStation #2 was installed tooperate this single filter.Cleaning cycles are initiated byDP and/or time and they last forabout 8 seconds.

Paul Earnest says the filtershave performed just as intended.

Greens are protected and labor-hours are minimized. Mr.Earnest describes the operationof the filters as follows:

Dirty water enters the inletflange (see Figure 4) thenpasses through the coarsescreen from outside-inremoving large hard objects. The pre-screened water thenflows to the inside of the finescreen. As water passes frominside-out in the fine screen, suspended solids are stopped ifthey are too big to passthrough the screen openings.Clean filtered water thenleaves the filter through theoutlet flange. As more andmore material builds up on theinside surface of the finescreen a pressure drop in thesystem begins to build. When apreset pressure drop thresholdis reached across the fine

screen, the controller issignaled to initiate a cleaningcycle. The first step in thecleaning cycle is to open therinse valve to atmosphericpressure which quickly dropsthe pressure in the flushchamber. Because the hollowdirt collector connects the endopenings in the nozzles to theflush chamber, water quicklymoves from the nozzleopenings, through the dirtcollector into the flushchamber and out the rinsevalve to a drain. Since thenozzle opening is nearlytouching the screen surface, water rushes backward throughthe screen (outside-in) in asmall area (about the size of adime) at a velocity exceeding50 ft/sec. This intense energysucks off the stickiest materialand expels it from the system

though the rinse valve. Thehydraulic motor then rotatesthe dirt collector while thehydraulic cylinder moves thedirt collector linearly. Thespiral movement of eachnozzle on the dirt collectorassures that every square inchof fine screen surface is passedat least twice by a nozzle andis sucked clean of all debris inless than 10 seconds. The nextcleaning cycle will begin whenthe pressure drop threshold ismet again or until a preset timeinterval has been reached.

This technologydemonstrates the elegance insimplicity that results inreliable performance. Golfcourses east, west, north orsouth all encounter the sameproblem: too much TSS inirrigation water. Now a reliablesolution has been found.

In terms of volume ofproduction, the humblepotato is the fourth largest

harvested crop internationally, after rice, wheat and corn; itis an important vegetable andkey raw material for manyindustrial processes.

Potato is the main cashcrop in some areas of China. These include Inner Mongolia

and Shaanxi Province. It isthe main food crop in somemountainous areas in theSouth-west of Guizhouprovince and in Yunnanprovince. In total, China hasthe world's largest area sownto potatoes at around6.7million ha. However, average yields are lowcompared to world levels at

around 15.6 tonnes perhectare.

From late 1990s, Frito-Layand Simplot introduced themodern potato growingtechniques to a number ofmodel farms in China. Thesefarms use central pivotirrigation systems and employmodern machinery toundertake most, if not all, of

the field operations. The bulkof these farms are located inInner Mongolia and northHebei province where large, relatively flat fields areavailable. Currently, suchfarms occupy a combinedarea of about 45,000-55,000hectares; their average yieldis much higher than that ofthe traditional farm growingpotatoes in China, at about 45to 60 tonnes per hectare.

Those areas where themodern potato farms arelocated have two significantfeatures compared to manyother potato growing areasin China and elsewhere:

1. Sandy soils - 90% of thesoils in this region are light-to-medium sandy in texture. In such soils, plant nutrientscan be leached out byirrigation waters and rainfall, greatly reducing theefficiency of fertilizers.

2. Alkaline soil - in theseregions, the soil PH is in therange 7.5 to 8, and may evenreach 8.2 in some places. Thisrestricts the availability to thecrop plants of a number ofimportant plant nutrients, such as phosphate, iron, manganese, copper and zinc.

In 2007, Monband, inpartnership with SQM, begansupplying high quality watersoluble fertilizers to themodern potato farms. At thattime, these farms wereexpanding rapidly. Monbandinvested heavily in researchand field experiments relatingto the use of fertilizer onpotatoes in the prevailinglocal soil conditions. As aconsequence, around 95% ofthe potato growers in this areabenefit from fertilizer regimesbased on high quality water

soluble fertilizers supplied byMonband.

Monband introduced thesplit application of watersoluble fertilizers, especiallythe use of potassium nitrateand soluble phosphorusfertilizers, to the growers inChina. The company heldmany seminars each year tointroduce the latest fertigationand nutrient managementtechnologies. The aims of thisprogram were to persuadelocal farmers to changetraditional fertilizationmethods and to use the rightfertilizer at the right time.

Below are the mainprinciples of fertilization ofmacro-nutrients suggestedby Monband; these are nowwidely used by many of thepotato growers thatattended the seminars:N:50-60% of the total N useshould be applied as a basedress before planting, with afurther 10% applied afteremergence and before tuberinitiation and the remaining30%-40% by fertigation orfoliar application. The use ofammonium sulphate ratherthan urea is advised duringthe early stage of the seasonto encourage quick plantuptake of N and to adjust thesoil pH because ammoniumsulphate is an acidic fertilizer.

P: P is very important forthe developing of the rootsystem and tuber set. P isimmobile in the soil; it doesnot move readily with water. As such, it is recommendedthat 80% of the total P isapplied prior to planting, with the remaining 20%applied during tuberinitiation to ensure thatsufficient P is available to

meet the periods of highplant demand for thisnutrient e.g. root systemdevelopment, and theformation of stolon and newtubers. Also, an applicationof MKP (30-45 kg per ha) isrecommended one monthbefore harvest to ensure theplant matures naturally andto harden the skin of thetuber in order to damageduring transportation andimprove storage quality. Aswith ammonium sulphate,MAP is an acidic fertilizerwhich helps to lower soil PH.

K: Potato is a particularlyK-hungry crop, requiring

FERTILIZERS

larger quantities of K than anyother plant nutrient. As withP, K is largely immobile is thesoil; however, in sandy soilswith low cation exchangecapacity, the movement of Kdoes occur. Monband suggestsapplying 45-55% of K before

planting and the remainderafter the stage of flower budsby fertigation or surfacespreading (using granular Kfertilizer). Especially duringthe tuber development stage, the application of highefficiency K fertilizer such as

NPK water soluble fertilizerswith a high K content andpotassium nitrate byfertigation is very important,as this ensures that the hugedemand for soluble K by thenew tubers is met, resulting inhigh tuber yields at harvest.

IntroductionIt is well-established thatfeeding insufficient levels ofthreonine (Thr) to poultry canresult in reduced growth andperformance (Kidd et al.2003). It has also beensuggested however that, undercommercial conditionssupplementing Thr above whatis considered nutritionallyadequate may be beneficial toovercome stresses on thegastrointestinal tract. Thiseffect of Thr may be due toimprovement in production ofintestinal mucin secretion andor stimulation of the gutimmune system (Horn et al.,2009). The study by Kidd etal. (2003) actually showed thatfeeding of Thr at graded levelsto broiler chickens rearedunder dirty environmentresponded in a positive linearmanner for performance andproduction. In support, Corzoet al. (2007) reported that Thrrequirements for maximumproduction vary between 0.71to 0.74 % and 0.73 to 0.78 %when reared in new and built-up litter, respectively. Basedon these results it seems likelythat to obtain optimumproduction and performance inbroiler chickens, thebackground or unavoidablestressors associated withcommercial conditions shouldbe considered whendetermining the Thrrequirement. In Asia, production is still often inopen house systems with

natural ventilation, and suchconditions can be expected toincrease the stress level inbroilers.

The objective of this studywas to estimate the effect ofincreasing dietary Thr levelson performance of broilerchickens raised in an open-sided house facility. Thisstudy was conducted at NongLam University, HCMC,Vietnam.

Experimental Design Two hundred and forty 1-day-old Cobb 500 broiler chickens(mixed sex) were randomlyallocated to 24 floor pens of10 birds in each pen in anopen sided house system.Broiler chicks were fed basalstarter diets for 0- 10dfollowed by experimentalfinisher diets from 10-41dformulated mainly with corn-soybean meal with 8 replicates

per diet. The feed ingredientcomposition of theexperimental basal diet isgiven in Table 1. During thefinisher phase (10-41d), threedietary treatments includingbasal (control) and Thrsupplemented diets wereprepared by addition of L-Threonine at 0, 0.09 and 0.15%. Diets were formulatedbased on ideal amino acidratios as recommended byEvonik Degussa (QuickChick,1.2; Table 2), with theexception of the basal controldiet, which intentionallycontained low levels of Thr.The Thr requirement on SIDbasis for broiler chickensduring the finisher phase (10-41d) is 0.66 %. The ratio ofThreonine:Lysine (Thr:Lys)was increased throughsupplementing L-Thr to thebase diet in order to createthree treatments with totalThr: Lys of 63, 70, and 76 %(58, 67 and 73 % on SIDbasis). The calculated levelsof total Thr and Lys in theexperimental diets wereconfirmed by analysis. Thecalculated and analyzed valuesof total and supplementalamino acid concentrations andprofiles are given in Table 2.Feed and water were providedad libitum. Body weight gainand feed intake were measuredat the end of the experimentand feed conversion ratio wascalculated. Tenth day bodyweight was considered forcalculation of the weight gain.

The results of this studyindicate that under practicalfeeding conditions ofbroilers raised in an openhouse system with naturalventilation asupplementation of Thrabove commercialrecommendations could bebeneficial to achieve higherperformance. The responseto the increase in dietary Thrconcentration may be due toimproved gastrointestinalfunction including intestinalintegrity (Kidd et al., 2003).This situation might haveincreased nutrientsabsorption from thegastrointestinal tract withenhanced nutrient utilizationefficiency. The nutrientlosses at the gut level hencecould be minimized.
