Innovative system boostsgreenhouse crop yields bydelivering more lightGrowers are sufferingconsiderable losses to harvestsof tomatoes and other productsas a result of having to resort towhitewashing to coolgreenhouses, which has theunfortunate side effect ofdepriving crops of valuablesunlight.

According to a new studycarried out in Spain, the majorityof greenhouses in theMediterranean basin have veryinefficient ventilation systems, aggravated by insect screens overair vents that act as a physicalbarrier to air circulation, leadinggrowers to resort to simple, butinefficient cooling methods.

Report authors theAndalusian Institute forResearch and Training forAgriculture's greenhouse unit(IFAPA) and shadingtechnology specialist Svenssonfound that whitewashing causedconsiderable yield losses as aresult of a shortage of sunlightreaching crops.

In fact, researchers foundthat the reduction in lighttransmission occurred duringthe entire day, even duringperiods (morning andafternoon) when shading wouldnot be necessary.

However, by using dynamicor active shading systems as analternative to the quick fix ofwhitewashing the studyrevealed that growers can

achieve an increase in yields ofup to 25%.

Shading systems react to thetemperature and the intensity ofthe sunlight entering thegreenhouse, meaning thateffective protection for cropscan be provided at the hottesttimes of the day, particularlyaround noon when temperatureand humidity reach harmfullevels for plants.

The joint study carried outby Svensson and IFAPA at theinstitution research centre in LaMojonera, Almería looked atthe performance of theHarmony mobile screen duringthe spring-summer 2013 tomatoseason, examining the effect onthe greenhouse climate andtomato yield.

As part of the project, one greenhouse wasequipped with a mobile shading screen while awhitewashing was applied to a second facility.

Researchers found over the course of the studythat plants in the greenhouse using the shadingsystem received 27.9% more sunshine than thewhitewashed facility, with the yield in the mobileshaded greenhouse higher during the wholeharvesting period.

Overall, the report revealed that the tomatoyield in the greenhouse using the Harmonymobile screen was 25% higher during the season

than the whitewashed greenhouse, with 12.4 morefruits harvested per metre square.

The study concluded that using the mobileshading system during the central hours of the day- when temperatures can exceed safe levels forcrops - delivered higher precocity and an increasein the tomato yield compared with traditionalwhitewashed greenhouses.

Natural fungi solution offers growers helpwhen faced with droughtOrganic fertilizer and plant protection specialistAgrocode, part of the Kimitec Group, haslaunched a new product that makes use ofnatural, beneficial fungi to help fruit andvegetable growers achieve viable harvests evenwhen faced with droughts or other challengingconditions.

With fresh produce growers in many of theworld's drier regions facing ever more extremeweather, the importance of realizing themaximum potential of natural environments isnow vital for achieving sustainable supplies offresh fruits and vegetables.

To begin to address these needs, Agrocode hasacquired the patent for Mycogel, an innovativeproduct which uses natural, beneficial fungi(mycorrhizae in vitro) to help plants endureextreme conditions increasing water and nutrientabsorption by crops.

The beneficial fungi present in the gel work tostimulate plant growth and survival during stressconditions, such as drought, salinity, poor soilquality or extreme pH (acidity).

Mycogel's natural ingredients also help plantsprotect themselves against harmful bacteria, fungus or nematodes (pathogens) and pestattacks, while promoting greater plant vigour andsurvival after transplantation.

However, most importantly from a productionpoint of view, the beneficial fungi present in theproduct help achieve an optimal nutritionalbalance in plants, in the process increasing cropyields and profitability.

Mycogel uses mycorrhizae, a beneficialfungi which enters plant roots withoutdamaging them and instead stimulatessignificant root growth.

According to Agrocode's own research, foreach centimetre of plant root treated, three metresof mycorrhizal root are produced which enablethe plant to access areas of soil that could notpreviously be reached. With the highest contentavailable on the market of ultrapure mycorrhizae,

Mycogel helps plants to betterabsorb water and nutrients, ensuring a greater quality andquantity of production.

The fungi contained inMycogel emit hyphae (fungus'long, branching structure) thatenable them to reach thesepreviously inaccessible layersof soil and in the process createa formidable network for theabsorption of water andnutrients.

They also produce enzymesthat allow plants to absorb allsources of phosphorous presentin the soil - even those that areblocked - enabling crops tobenefit from one of the mostimportant sources of naturalnutrition. Speaking about thelaunch of the product, Kimitec

general manager Félix Garciasaid Mycogel would helpstrengthen the company'sposition in global markets.

“We have managed toachieve a perfect combinationof water, nutrients andphosphorous in Mycogel, through which we can ensure ahigh crop production levels,” hesaid.

Garcia said Agrocode'sacquisition of the worldwidepatent for Mycogel from theSpanish National ResearchCouncil (CSIC) would enablethe company to enter andbecome technological leaders inthe global market formycorrhizal fungi inoculants.

“Our patent protects the invitro manufacturing process of

this mycorrhizae-basedinoculant whose gel-basisenables perfect application viairrigation and maintains allforms of mycorrhization - notjust the spores - in an activecondition,” he explained.

The in vitro manufacturingprocess also allows Agrocodeto offer clients a guarantee thatno other microorganisms arepresent in the gel.

“Our manufacturing processenables us to offer a productwith a mycorrhization contentthat is 50 times higher than anyrival solution, as a result ofwhich we are able to deliver themost technologically-advancedand efficient product of its kindavailable on the market,”Garcia added.

Saudi Arabia and Omanare leading a fresh waveof investment in the

Gulf's aquaculture industry, asincreasing regional fishconsumption gives investors abig opportunity to capitaliseon the fastest growing foodprocessing sector in theMiddle East.

In December 2013, theSaudi Arabian Ministry ofAgriculture said it would inject

an additional US$10.6 billioninto aquaculture projects toproduce one million tons offish in the next 16 years, whileOman, which has long been atthe forefront of aquaculture inthe Gulf region, announcedthat it plans to invest US$1.3billion in fisheriesdevelopment up to 2020.

The UAE, which has theworld's largest sturgeon fishfarm in Abu Dhabi, also has big

plans, with the country'sMinistry of Environment andWater expected to announceseveral multi-billion dollaraquaculture projects in thecoming months.

Richard Pavitt, ExhibitionDirector of AGRA Middle East, said: “Aquaculture is the fastestgrowing food processingindustry in the Middle East, with the most recent fisheries'data indicating that farmed fishoutput across the region hasgrown five-fold in a ten year

period, from 194,000 tonnes in2002 to 1.1 million tonnes in2011.”

“Given the decline in wildcatches, this trend is likely tocontinue, and with 10kg percapita of fish consumptionamong all Arab countries, experts predict that supply mustincrease 20 per cent to maintain

Investments in research, science, and technology willlay the foundation for

improved agriculturalproductivity, reduced waste anda healthier and safer foodsupply in the Middle East andNorth Africa(MENA) region, aninvestment expert has said.

Syed Tariq Husain, CEO ofEmirates Investments Group inthe UAE, said that robustinvestments in agriculturalresearch and development fromthe public and private sectorsare vital for the ongoing growthof the food industries in theregion.

“Both public and privatesectors need to identify researchpolicies, choose the besttechnologies to improveproductivity in a particularlocation, and developinvestment strategies forexpanding agribusiness andinfrastructure,” said Husain, aheadline speaker at theAgribusiness Outlook Forum, part of AGRA Middle East,

which takes place from 25 to 27March at the DubaiInternational Convention andExhibition Centre.

“Countries such as SaudiArabia have made mistakes inthe past by investing in projectslike wheat and cattle farmingwhich are highly waterintensive and not sustainable. We need to explore alternatives, for example investing inagricultural land abroad orleasing land to a professionalwho can manage it more

efficiently with betterpractices.”

According to Global HarvestInitiative's 2012 GlobalAgriculture Production Report, food demand in the MENAregion is expected to grow at2.14 per cent by 2050. Husainsaid that regional countriesneed to prioritise theirinvestments into products, andkey geographical locations thatare sustainable in order toachieve food security in theregion.

He added: “MENA countriescan succeed in conducting costeffective policies to achievesustainable agricultural growthby forming strategicpartnerships with countries inthe Central Asian Republic,North Africa, Pakistan andTurkey. systems, has released a newalfalfa profitability brochurecalled "Increasing Alfalfa andOther Forage Yields ThroughEfficient Irrigation Solutions."

The eight-page full-colorbrochure provides best practicesand the latest research forachieving higher alfalfa yields, optimizing water use andlowering costs throughprecision irrigation.

“Alfalfa is one of the mostimportant forage crops grownfor hay in the world today,”says Omar Zaghloul, Lindsay

Regional Director, Middle Eastand Near East. “Irrigatingalfalfa is different fromirrigating annual grain cropssince the objective is to producea high yield of forage and notgrain. With ample water, alfalfahas the ability produce highyields of very good quality feedthat is high in protein.”

The brochure identifiesmanagement objectives forirrigated alfalfa, including theideal soil water content in theroot zone, when light orfrequent irrigation is best, prevention of water runoff, irrigation before and afterharvest, and how to prevent

weeds from germinating.Zaghloul says a lack of water

at any stage of alfalfa growthwill lower yield and cause theforage quality to peak in fewerdays after harvest, and becomeoverly mature faster than undernormal conditions.

Grass and grass legumemixes and how to best useirrigation for maximum forageproduction and quality are alsodiscussed in the brochure.

“The correct mix of grassesand legumes is one of the mostimportant aspects of highproduction from irrigatedpasture. The forage species thatperform well in dryland

During last decades thegrowing of indoor andoutdoor ornamental

plants in different regions ofTurkey has recorded significantprogress. It is very promisingfor the future to see that highquality plants are being grownand sold presently in domesticand foreign markets.

Turkey is a country with

different climate regionssuitable for growing variouskinds ornamental plants, mainareas of growing ornamentalsare Sakarya and Yalova close toIstanbul, Izmir-Odemis, Antalyaand Mediterranean region.Turkey is also located close tocountries where the market forornamental plants is growingand therefore exports of

ornamental plants are increasingevery year. Turkish landscapecontractors have completedimportant projects in Turkeyand abroad.

Turkish ornamental PlantGrowers Association (SUSBIR)is one of the 7 sub-unions, thathas been formed in accordancewith their fields of activities asspecified the Seed GrowingCode No. 5553, which cameinto force on 8 November 2006,and as the central Associationthese 7 Associations haveformed the Turkish Seed Union.SUSBIR began operations inApril 2008 and made 5thgeneral assembly in July 2012.

Ornamental plants grown andsold by our members:Trees, Small ornamental Trees,Annual Seasonal Flowers, Palmtrees, Shrubs, Climbers, GroundCovers, Lawn, OrnamentalGrass, Indoor OrnamentalPlants, Cut flowers.

The major target of SUSBIRis to organize ornamental plantsector in Turkey and toimplement various activitiesserving to the improvement ofthe ornamentals plant growersin Turkey i.e. with their qualityand competitive power, theybecome worldwide recognizedand reliable and join amongworld leaders. Also, to attain aninstitutional structure in thesector, improve quality ofproduction and developmarketing techniques, organizecourses and seminars fortraining, assure sale of thegrower's plants at the actualmarket price, to protect theirinterests at the highest level.

SUSBIR: SERVING TO THE IMPROVEMENT OF THEORNAMENTAL PLANT GROWERS IN TURKEY

Page 41: Gulf agriculture march april 2014

MARCH APRIL 2014

We also aimed to increasequality and variety of theproducts in the market, improvecompetition conditions and tocreate a union with broadparticipation throughout thecountry, where the problems ofthe sectors are expressed anddefined and solutions for properdevelopment of the sector areseeked.

Growth of the sector will bepossible with quality andhealthy ornamental plantcultivation, growing the rightvarieties at the right quantitiesthat are parallel to the marketdemand, as a result the plantswill be sold at the right priceand the grower's efforts will bevalued. For such a system towork, an auto-control systemwill be created spontaneously,

resulting from keeping thesector under record andforming a central and sharedinformation base for growerson the one hand and from flowof information and sharing thisinformation and data flowthrough the majority of thegrowers on the other hand. Andthe grower, who realizes profit, will naturally prefer to investfor the growth of productionand development. Registration, representation, participation andcontributions of sectormembers are very important tospeed up this cycle, toaccelerate the growth of theindustry and produce commonsolutions to problems of thesector.

SUSBIR, with its 224members representing major

growers, importers exportersand landscape contractors, aimsto create the structure describedabove where the problems ofsector are discussed andsolutions are found by membersand necessary orientations arecreated for the healthy growthof the sector.

One thousand cool cows for each brotherThe Featured FarmThe Van Ess Dariy farm located in Sanborn, Iowa, is run by five brothers and overseen by their parents, Harvey and Lisa Van Ess. The family saw an opportunity to move their dairy operation from Idaho to Iowa which would allow them to increase the number of cows in their heard.

Heat Stress ProblemThe climate in the Prairies of Iowa is mild, but, the air flow from the desert area in the south west region of the United States moves up into Iowa and can result in unusually hot, dry summer temperatures. The Van Ess family needed to find a way to avoid the dips in production, which happens when the cows experience heat stress.

Quick factsThe eff ects of a Munters Cross Ventilated building

• Reduced heat stress on the herd

• Comfortable temperatures year round

• Consistent milk production

• Maximize feed conversion

• Improved conception rate

Cool SolutionThe family was introduced to the Munters Ventilation System. The system allows the entire heard to be housed in a single enclosed building which saves on the construction costs and animal management. With the building being enclosed they are able to control inside temperatures and avoid heat stress, resulting in production loss.

The Van Ess building houses over 5000 dairy cows in one enclosed building with enough space to house an additional 1000 cows. There are 120 VX 55”, 2HP fans which move over 4 million cubic feet of air every minute (CFM). The building is designed to exchange all the air in the building every minute. To cool the intake air we have over 115,832 cubic feet of CELdek pad and 960 feet of CT Series Evaporative Cooling. Company spokesman Jeremy VanEss states that the Munters Ventilation Systems performs even better than he expected. He is able to keep the cows at a comfortable temperature all year long, which has resulted in no dips in production through out the year. The family selected Munters because of the reputation of being the market leader and the knowledge of his Sales Representative.

Cross VentilationDairy cow cooling has evolved over the years. A market innovation lead by Munters is the Cross Ventilated Building. A Cross Ventilation System uses VX exhaust fans, on one side of the building, with Express Cool Evaporative Cooling system on the opposite side. The exhaust fans draw the fresh outside air through the evaporative cooler, which can cool the outside air by 15-20 degrees F. The cool air coupled with the airspeed generated by the fans, cool the livestock, maximizing feed conversion and production output. The system is run with a computer controller leaving the system to run itself based on the programmed temperature settings.

Plastic Cages: Many havetried to copy these products, butnone have managed to matchthe genuine Polarcirkel designsand quality builds. Plastic cagesstarted out as small single pipecircles, but now our largestmodels approach 200mcircumference, and withfloating pipes of 500mmdiameter. Both circular andsquare cage systems areavailable. Combined withAKVA group´s global sales andservice network, the Polarcirkel

Cage is well proven andrecognized worldwide.

Steel Cages: Wavemaster isthe world's leading supplier ofsteel cages with close to 12.000cages delivered since 1985! Thecages provide an ideal platformfor fish farming. Wide non-slipwalkways with high free-boardaround all sides of the cagesallow the operator fullflexibility of operation and easyaccess from cage to cage. Thisis becoming essential for goodhusbandry and maintenance. The compactness and simplifiedmooring arrangements makeWavemaster Steel Cages a veryattractive option for many sites.

Nets: AKVA group is leadingsupplier of cage farming netsfor both plastic cages and steelcages. We an offer a wide rangeof fiber nets and non-fiber nets, bird nets for predatorprotection, catching nets forharvesting and service deals forcleaning and antifouling. Itis now also fully integrated withcamera control, pellet- andenvironmental sensors andFishtalk production controlsoftware.

Net Cleaning Systems:Marine fouling is driven bysunlight and high watertemperatures. Therefore, thewaterflow through the cagesand oxygen level will bereduced. Strong algae growthcauses the cage/net to becomeheavier, which causes stress andin the worst case scenario abreakdown of the cageconstruction.

regard to business volume aswell as the number of newlyestablished subdivisions.

From the modest start inSvanavågen, Egersund, thecompany now has a number ofservice departments along thecoast of Norway (Egersund,Rabben, Kristiansund,Vevelstad, Brønnøysund,Vesterålen) while theproduction of new nets takesplace in the Lithuanian townTaurage. Each of oursubdivisions also keeps varioustypes of special nets, such asroof and container nets, in storefor speedy delivery.

Recently Egersund Net hasestablished a special fishfarming gear shop, at Rabben inthe municipality of Austevoll, offering a rich assortment ofgoods, such as work clothes,HSE gear, chains and mooringequipment.

At present Egersund Net isfirmly established as a safesupplier and market leader withregard to seine net technology, services and equipment for thefish farming business.

Service on fish-farming nets:Egersund Net offers servicesfor the fish farming industryfrom our modern premisesalong the norwegain coast.Through our focus on qualityand environmental demands,we have installations with highcapacity adjusted to the needsof our customers. All ourpremises are certified accordingto ISO 9001 and NorwegianStandard 9415.

Antifouling of Nets: In ourunique antifouling installationswe focus on optimizing theeffect of various types ofantifouling; product safety, environment and HES.

The fish farming nets arepre-treated with primer thatgives an optimal and long-lasting protection of netting andropes. The primer "glues" thefibres together and creates astable and homogeneous basisbefore an antifouling topcoating is applied.

Self-polishing treatment isthen applied as an exteriorantifouling of netting and rope.As the antifouling is teareddown, the primer will protectthe fibres in the netting fromfouling and it will keep thestrength in the netting. This willalso make it easier to wash thenets. Nets which are treated

with our antifouling can bestored for a long time.

Egersund Net has producednetting since 1996, and has amodern machinery. Ourproduction is certifiedaccording to ISO 9001. Todaywe have a production capacityon about 1500 tons a year.
