There is no script. It has a very simple message. It won the National Cut Films Competition in 2010/11. Long term and short term health impacts can be discussed. How does smoking affect appearance? Bad breath / yellow teeth / clothes smelling of smoke. Learning outcomes: • Respond to visual stimuli by expressing own ideas and feelings and interpreting information • Understand the risks associated with smoking and its health implications • Group work – working in small groups with a common goal, discussion and creation of a film idea This resource can be taught over one lesson to introduce tobacco and smoking as a topic. You can fully support the young people to make the film or use the first lesson to get them started. A short filmmaking guide, top tips and free editing software is available on www.cutfilms.org Group introduction (5 minutes): Ask the group the following questions to elicit discussion. Write responses on board / flip chart. Questions: • What do you know about smoking? • What words do you associate with smoking or tobacco? • Who influences you the most? Group Discussion (10 minutes): 1. Put the students into seven groups. Give each group one of the images from Resource 1. 2. In groups they discuss the image and write down what they think about it. 3. After six minutes ask them to report back to other groups what their image is and what they think about it. Did they know about what it is saying? Activity 1 – Film (10 minutes): Show ‘Cut It Out’ short film and then encourage discussion. (Health related / family orientated). • Do they think it was easy to make? • Would it make them think about not smoking? • Would they share it online and if yes / no – why? Activity 2 – Group discussion and brainstorming (15 minutes): • Using Resource 2 put the Cut Films brief onto the board/ overhead. • In their groups ask them to think of one idea that they would do in their groups to capture the brief. • They need to think of one message that they want to get across to their audience. • They can write ideas down on how they would get the message across and what they could use to film it. Plenary (10 minutes): 1. The groups nominate a spokesperson to read out their ideas, what their message is and how they would try and get their message across. 2. Ask all groups to vote by show of hands on which film they think would be most effective in getting people their age not to smoke. Closing and further activities Ask the groups if they would like to put their ideas into practice and enter the competition. If in a group, line up chair cinema style and provide popcorn, lower the lights and show on board / overhead projector.
