Page 2: GROSSE POINTE PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM APRIL 2014 PIERCE … · 2014-04-01 · GROSSE POINTE PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM PIERCE POINTER Pierce Middle School 15430 Kercheval Grosse Pointe Park,

Also in April, a pilot of the Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA) will be administered to our seventh graders in math only, and is strictly a practice assessment. This on-line assessment may be taking the place of the MEAP in the Spring 0f 2015 or it may be delayed. This deci-sion is one that the Michigan Department of Education has yet to finalize. We just couldn’t pass up the opportunity to expose our students to some of the nuances as-sociated with this new on-line experience. The SBA will connect to the Common Core State Standards that our state has adopted. We applied to take this test at each grade level in math and English Language Arts. With the volume of pilots occurring throughout the state we feel fortunate to be chosen for this one. If you have questions about the SBA, they can be directed to Pierce administrators, Judy Gaffrey or Gary Buslepp. Our annual literary and art magazine, Inklings, has been recognized and awarded a Silver Crown Award by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. Congratulations to advisor Geneva Scully and her staff of talented student editors and artists. This year’s staff is excit-ed about their publication and hopes for similar success. More student awards will be earned in the months ahead. We hope to update them in the May edition of the Pierce Pointer. Also, please note on pages 10 and 11, we are very proud of our Scholastic Art and Writing, Ora-torical, and Spelling Bee medalists. Thank you to Susan Quinn, our English Language Arts Chair. Congratulations to Deanna Kado and Julie Schuetze! Both are Pierce moms and distin-guished volunteers who are among this year’s recipients, honored by the GPPSS Board of Education on Monday, April 28

th for their volunteer efforts across the district. We thank them

for their volunteer efforts and support. On behalf of the Pierce faculty and staff we wish you and your family a happy and healthy Spring Break 2014, Winter is clearly in our rear view mirror as we prepare for the home stretch and the fourth quarter. Sincerely,

Gary Buslepp Principal

FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S DESK

As always, I have a few discipline and policy reminders to share this month. Parents, please review our dress code with your student. The specifics of the dress code can be found in your student’s planner and have also been reprinted in this issue of the Pierce Pointer.

Basically, students must be modestly and appropriately dressed. Also, if you have an eighth grade student please review the eligibility requirements for participation in the end of the year activities. These eligibility requirements are based on student behavior and were sent home in a letter at the beginning of the year. If you need a copy, please contact the main of-fice.

Additionally, I need to remind everyone that, students who have an unexcused absence from Friday after school detention will be assigned an ISS for the first occurrence and an out of school separation for each subsequent occurrence. Finally, don’t forget to check your stu-dent’s signature card on a regular basis. The signature card is located in the front of the stu-dent planner and will give you a clear picture of your student’s daily conduct and help identify any areas in which he/she might be having trouble. Thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

Judith Gaffrey

Assistant Principal

COUNSELOR CORNER

Summer School

Summer school offers exceptional opportunities for students struggling with academics or certain content areas. Classes may also offer a refresher course for students wishing to learn more about a particular content area. Enrollment in each class is limited to provide many opportunities for personal instruction. Students enroll in classes designed for the grade that they will be entering in the fall. For example, in most cases, our current 8

th grad-

ers would take high school courses in summer school.

At the beginning of May, counselors will be gathering information from teachers to determine two things. One is which students need to attend summer school (Board Policy states that any student failing two quarters in the same subject should attend). The other is which stu-dents who, though not required, would benefit from strengthening their skills during the sum-mer session. More detailed information should be available on the Grosse Pointe Schools website and counselors will send out letters to the parents of the above categories of stu-dents by the end of May. If you have any questions about whether summer school would be a good choice for your child, please contact the appropriate counselor after we have had a chance to gather recommendations (mid-May).

Page 4: GROSSE POINTE PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM APRIL 2014 PIERCE … · 2014-04-01 · GROSSE POINTE PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM PIERCE POINTER Pierce Middle School 15430 Kercheval Grosse Pointe Park,

The Pierce Middle School community believes that standards of neatness, modesty, and ap-propriateness in clothing and accessories encourage an atmosphere conducive to learning, work, and orderliness. Adherence to the dress code is expected of all students. Parents should assist the school in implementing these standards by sending students to school each day appropriately dressed and well groomed for the school setting.

Determination of appropriate dress is made by the administration. However, any faculty member may question whether attire is acceptable and direct a student to the office.

1. Clothing should be clean and in good repair; undergarments may not be visible. Jeans may not have holes or rips.

2. Students may wear slacks, jeans, skirts or shorts to school. A Waistbands of pants or skirts may not be rolled down so midriff is showing. B. Shorts may be no shorter than fingertip length. C. Pants must be the appropriate size and worn so that underwear cannot be seen.

the middle of kneecap to hem of skirt

3. Slits in skirts or dresses may not be revealing

4. Shirts and blouses must be the appropriate size; undershirts, revealing necklines, low-cut, see-through or bare midriff blouses are not permitted. Sleeveless shirts must be at least 2 fingers in width at the shoulders

5. Clothing with alcohol, cigarette, drug, violence, sexual or other inappropriate messages or symbols is not allowed.

6. Shoes are to be worn at all times in school. Bedroom slippers are not allowed.

8. No chains, wallet chains, spike jewelry or other dangerous ac-cessories may be worn.

9. For safety reasons, backpacks/book bags may be carried to and from school but must be stored in lockers during the school day.

Page 5: GROSSE POINTE PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM APRIL 2014 PIERCE … · 2014-04-01 · GROSSE POINTE PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM PIERCE POINTER Pierce Middle School 15430 Kercheval Grosse Pointe Park,

Spring may be struggling with breaking Jack Frost’s chokehold on the seasons, but the Pierce PTO cannot be stopped. March was PACKED with activities designed to revitalize and renew and bring parents, staff, and students alike together after a LONG winter!

Pierce Progressive Dinner – Chairs Michelle Balconi and Cindi Portwood send out huge and heartfelt THANK YOUs to the Cullen family, Cabbage Patch Cafe and Pierce parents Mark and Sheri Rieth of Atwater in the Park for the unbelievable commitment and support with this year's Pierce Progressive Dinner. Please also thank the host families who opened their homes and many of who kept saying "yes" at our requests for more and more and more seats so that we could welcome all who wanted to attend: Bearse, Berger, Buhl, Cornell, Erickson, Hensien, Hurley, Jackman, Johnson, Keane, Klepp, Kline, Korejwo, Kurta, Muawad, Mul-cahy and Stackpoole. We hosted more than 170 people this year - the largest group we've ever worked with - love our Pierce families!! Thanks also to Woods Wholesale Wine and Hotz Catering for the wine glasses. They were a pleasure to work with and accommodated our last minute requests with ease. Thanks to Ed Jackman and Hungry Howies for handling the pizzas delivered at Atwater. And we are very grateful to Rick Portwood and Display Group for providing and delivering tables and bar stools to Atwater, which will have their own beautiful ones soon.

I know I speak for all of us who attended when I say an enormous round of applause is due to our amazing organizers – Michelle Balconi and Cindi Portwood! You graciously took on location challenges, overwhelm-ing numbers and late responders (sadly including the PTO Prez) and found a place for everyone interested.

SUPER Fun Night! – I am ever grateful to our Class Advisors who put together these great events for our kids! Specifically, for this biggest one of the year, thank you to Michele Bauer, Sara Fischer Hodges, and Amy Gra-ham. Thank you to all the parent volunteers and staff who helped to make Super Fun Night, SUPER FUN for all the many Pierce kids. Every year we worry that we will not have enough volunteers and every year Pierce parents step in, sacrificing their hard-earned Friday night to make it all possible. Michele, Sara and Amy would like to thank: Melanie and Eric Berger, Courtney Bocci, Sarah Bowe, Wendy Bruetsch, Laurie Burgoyne, Margaret Coffman, Chris Crader, Tracy Craig, Nancy DeGrand, Katie Ecclestone, Tory and Jean-nie Jones, Ken Korejwo, Renee Palazzolo, Jessie Schenk, Helen Srebernak, Sandy Srodawa, Susan Trudeau, Zelka Trifunovic

Staff Appreciation Luncheon – Thank you to Sarah Monahan and her committee volunteers, who offered a fabulous spread to thank our teachers and staff for the wonderful job they do year round. The luncheon, if you have not had a chance to donate to it, occurs during Parent-Teacher Conferences in the Spring. Next year it will be expanded to include the Fall Conferences as well. Sarah’s committee is also responsible for providing baked goods and other treats for the staff once per month. If you are interested in donating, con-tact Sarah!

2014-15 Pierce PTO Board – There are just a few spots left on next year’s Board and Chairpersons but they are very important ones! PTO runs smoothest and parents are more engaged if we have involvement from parents from all over the community. It is our goal to make sure each “feeder” elementary has strong repre-sentation. You can make a BIG impact with a SMALL amount of service. If you are interested in volunteer-ing for the Board or just want to learn more, please contact Katie Ecclestone at [email protected] .

Buffalo Wild Wings Fundraiser – While this was not a PTO fundraiser, who cannot appreciate any oppor-tunity to raise money for our auditorium? Thank you to all of you who participated in any way on March 26th!

Next PTO Meeting – Tuesday, April 15 at 6:30pm in the Pierce Library All parents are welcome to join us and we would love to have you there!

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to contact me. Kim Clexton, Pierce PTO President [email protected] 313-319-8195

COLUMBIA SCHOLASTIC PRESS ASSOCIATION CSPA is an international student press association, founded in 1925, whose goal is

to unite student journalists and faculty advisers at schools and colleges through edu-cational conferences, idea exchanges, textbooks, critiques and award programs.

NEW YORK, NY - The Columbia Scholastic Press Association announced its top awards for scho-lastic publications at the 90th annual Scholastic Convention. This year a total of 1,236 digital, newspapers, magazines and yearbooks published during the 2012-2013 academic year were eligible for judging in the 2014 Crown Awards Program. All entries were judged at Columbia University from December 14-16, 2013 by the Board of Crown Judges. Both print and digital publications were judged on writing/editing, design, content, concept, photog-raphy, art and graphics. This year CSPA judged digital only, print magazine, print newspaper and print yearbook as well as - hybrid, a membership classified as a publication that works to combine their digital and print publications as one. While most hybrids grew from print newspapers that added digital platforms, several magazines became hybrids too. CSPA created the hybrid membership as a response to publications moving from print to pixels. The Awards Convocation for Scholastic Crown recipients took place during the 90th Scholastic Convention, on Friday, March 21, 2014 at Columbia University in New York City. Edmund J. Sullivan, executive director of the CSPA, will present plaques to those winners attend-ing the Convention. Remaining awards will be mailed beginning April 1st. The CSPA is an international student press association uniting student journalists and faculty ad-visers at schools and colleges through educational conferences, idea exchanges and award pro-grams. Owned and operated by Columbia University since 1925, the CSPA offers three major ser-vices: 1-annual competitions and awards for members, including the Crown Awards, 2-planning two conventions (one national, one regional) and a week-long summer workshop at Columbia, plus 3-small press publishing activities to support magazine articles published as part of its website and an annual Awards DVD. The judging panel included: Jenny Dial, Houston Chronicle MBA beat writer; Houston, TX; Nancy Hastings, retired adviser, Highland, IN; Bobby Hawthorne, author and writing instructor, Austin, TX; Jamie Miles, assistant managing editor, New York, NY; Mark Murray, coordinator of technology systems, Arlington Independent School District, Arlington, TX; Cheryl Pell retired journalism profes-sor, East Lansing, MI; Cederic Victor, art director and arts instructor, New York, NY; C. Bruce Wat-terson, education consultant, Rome, GA; Randy Yeip, graphics editor, New York, NY; Kathleen Zwiebel, retired adviser, Pottsville, PA.

1891 Basketball – The “Original” Game

During our ‘March Madness’ basketball unit, students learned about the origin of the game of basketball. They then played using the 13 original rules made by its inventor, Dr. James Naismith. He invented basketball after being given the task, by his supervisor, to create a game for students to play inside, during the cold winter months. Naismith combined some

of the rules of soccer, football, and hockey. He attached peach baskets to the balconies and used a soccer ball as the first ‘basketball’. It was strictly a passing game, at that time, since the soccer balls were heavy and did not bounce well. Throughout the years, rules continued

to change & it became an Olympic sport in 1936. Here at Pierce, we also used bushel bas-kets and a soccer ball. It was a new, fun experience!
