Think about it…
What do we want from our cleaning products? Asthma Headaches/Migraines Reproductive Disorders Eye and Organ Damage Dizziness & Fatigue
Think about it…
What do we want from our cleaning products? Remove the contaminant (including odors),
bring back clean look and feel to surface Kill bacteria or fungi – to various levels
depending on application Protect surface (e.g. floor wax) Minimize time & effort Affordable
Myth Busters
GCs are too expensive GCs are cost competitive. You may just need to
think in terms of dilution ratios…. GCs don’t work
GCs do work. Ask around; check out the case studies. Try more than one to find the best fit for your application.
It’s too hard to change Help is available.

Implementation Strategies
Have an open discussion with all stakeholder representatives
Consider before/after surveys Do site audits with product vendors and
janitorial staff to “right-fit” green products Ensure new product training happens Have an open mind when problem-solving Have some patience if it takes more than one
try to find the best green product for your application – it will be worth it
Why it Matters
Using green cleaners vs. conventional cleaners: Reduces asthma and other health risks to
janitorial workers and building occupants Plays a role in improving student learning; worker
productivity Reduces environmental pollution Meets LEED O+M requirements A (previously) suffering occupant will thank you
for changing! All while still meeting cleaning and budget
objectives
Thank You!

WHY? WHY? WHY?• Money – yours, mine and ours. Using the contract saves money.• Health – yours, mine and ours. Using the products on contract
reduces substantially the exposure of cleaners and building occupants to chemicals that can cause harm.
• Time – which is of course money and is yours mine and ours. The products on contract are in general the most efficient products available. (Efficiency is a very important consideration of green.)
• Prognostication – predicting future events based on facts, signs, past experience or other divining device. If you don’t you will be in the same boat or without about like the people on the next slide.

Oh what difference does it make?
• Remember this?
People thought there were no consequences to their actions and inaction.

What’s in it for you to go through the excruciating pain associated with change? In 90 days your done. Everything is changed and you no longer have to worry about Wendy.
In 180 days you start to realize you are under budget. (Almost always)
Now you can buy the good tissues!!!!!! (Yes there are good green tissues)
In none months you can’t remember what all the fuss was about.
In one year you are operating as an expert in the field for all those departments not as smart as yours.

Why it Matters
Welcome to a COASTWIDE LABORATORIES’Presentation . . . . .
Presented by
Rick WoodwardCorporate Director of Sustainability
Why it matters• Impacts on building and its occupants
– Protecting the building– Health, Productivity, Quality, Performance
• Impacts on the environment– 5 billion pounds of chemicals– 4.5 billion pounds of janitorial paper– 250 million pounds of vacuum cleaners– 35 billion plastic trashcan liners
• Impacts on health– 3 million cleaning personnel
Why it matters• EPA studies show that indoor air quality is
on average 2 to 5 times worse than outdoor air
• WHO states that 30% of buildings worldwide have IAQ PROBLEMS
• DOE study shows a 6% increase in productivity w/ IAQ improvement
• EPA says >$60 Billion in lost productivity
Injuries That OccurInjuries Per Year (per 100 Janitors)
– Workers’ Comp. Claims 2 per 100
– unreported 4 per 100
Average Cost Per Claimed Injury– Lost Time $350– Medical $375
$725
