INTRODUCTION

“We can’t live without computers ,

so lets learn how to live with them

in a way that makes them

friendlier to the environment”.

GOALS OF GREEN COMPUTING

Reduce the use of hazardous materials in the manufacturing of the

systems.

Maximize energy efficiency during the product’s lifetime, and

Encourage recyclability and biodegradability of products that have

reached end-of-life

What is Green Computing?

Green computing, green IT or ICT Sustainability, is the study and

practice of environmentally sustainable computing or IT.

Includes “designing, manufacturing, using, and disposing” of

computers, servers, and associated subsystems—such as monitors,

printers, storage devices, and networking and communications

systems — efficiently and effectively with minimal or no impact on the

environment.

Green Computing is “ Where organizations adopt a policy of ensuring

that the setup and operations of Information Technology produces the

minimal carbon footprint” .

HISTORY

In 1992, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency launched Energy Star.

It’s a voluntary labeling program that is designed to promote and

recognize energy-efficiency in monitors, climate control equipment, and

other technologies.

In 2012 alone, American families and businesses have saved $24 billion on

utility bills.

Prevented greenhouse gas emissions equal to those from 41 million

vehicles.

Need Of Green Computing

❖ Increasing impacts on Nature.

➢ Toxicity.

➢ Pollution.

❖ Computer energy is often wasteful..?

❖ Printing is often wasteful?

E - WASTE

Electronic waste or e-waste describes discarded

electrical or electronic devices

Page 10: Green computing

How e-waste are harmful to human

health and the environment?

Printing is often wasteful

• 1 ton of office paper uses 24 trees.

• 1 ton of recycled paper saves 17 trees.

Green Use Of IT

● Save Energy

Shutdown / Sleep / Hibernate Your Computer when not in use.

● Use Power Saving Modes.

● Use LCD monitors.

● Use Laptops.

● Use hardware/ software with energy star label.

● Save Paper when Printing.

Advanced Configuration and Power

Interface (ACPI)It is an industry specification for the efficient

handling of power consumption in desktop and

mobile computers.

Advantages :1. The user can specify at what time a device, such as a display

monitor, is to turn off or on.

2. The operating system can lower the clock speed during times

when applications don't require the full processor clock speed.

3. The computer can enter a stand-by mode when no one is using it,

but with modem power left on to receive incoming faxes.

VIA TechnologiesTaiwanese company that manufactures motherboard

chipsets, CPUs, and other computer hardware,

introduced its initiative for “green computing” in 2001.

Solar ComputingA solar-powered laptop is a notebook computer that uses built-in photo voltaic solar panels to run and recharge its battery.

Lead free and RoHS ComputingDirective on the restriction of the use of certain

hazardous substances in electrical and electronic

equipment(Mercury, Cadmium, Hexavalent Chromium, etc).

Energy efficient computingGone are the days when computer designers strived to

create faster and more powerful processors. Now,

winning products focus on power-efficiency.
