Introduction Green Computing is a scientific study to reduce the use of harmful material, maximize the energy, efficiency and promote recyclability. In other words, it is the study of efficient and effective 1. Designing 2. Manufacturing 3. Using 4. Disposing 5. Recycling 6. Itsrelated products like server network system, monitor, printer etc. 5. History One of the first manifestations of the green computing movement was the launch of the Energy Star program back in 1992.Energy Star applied to products like computer monitors, television sets and temperature control devices like refrigerators, air conditioners, and similar items. As the concept developed, green computing began to encompass thin client solutions, energy cost accounting, virtualization practices, e-waste, etc. 6. Briefing Green IT, or green computing, refers to initiatives to use technology in a more environment friendly way. The growing green IT movement includes initiatives within companies to use power more efficiently, reduce waste, and create more eco-friendly computing products. Some examples of green initiatives include: leveraging new teleconferencing tools, encouraging telecommuting, implementing power saving policies, and using cloud-based services and applications. On the corporate IT level, other green IT trends include server and storage virtualization, reducing data centre energy consumption, and investing in more efficient hardware. 7. Roads of Green Computing Green Use : Minimizing the electricity consumption of computers and their peripheral devices and using them in an eco friendly manner. Green Disposal : Re-making an existing computer or appropriately disposing off or recycling, unwanted electric equipment. Green Design : Designing energy efficient computers, servers, printers, projectors and other digital devices. Green Manufacturing : Minimize waste during the manufacturing of computers and other sub systems to reduce the environment of these activities. 8. Approaches To Green Computing Power management : An open industry standard that allows an operating system to directly control the power saving aspects of its underlying hardware. This allows a system to automatically turn off components such as monitors and hard drives after set periods of inactivity.Power Supply : Desktop computer power supplies (PSUs) are generally 7075% efficient, dissipating the remaining energy as heat. As of July 20, 2007, all new Energy Star 4.0-certified desktop PSUs must be at least 80% efficient.Display : LCD monitors typically use a cold-cathode fluorescent bulb to provide light for the display. Some newer displays use an array of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) in place of the fluorescent bulb, which reduces the amount of electricity used by the display.Material Recycling : Recycling computing equipment can keep harmful materials such as lead, mercury, and chromium out of landfills, but often computers gathered through recycling drives are shipped to developing countries where environmental standards are less strict than in North America and Europe. 9. Manufacturing of Green Computers Recyclable plastics : Computers are constructed from non- recyclable plastics ,i.e. Recyclable polycarbonates resin.Volume reduction : Remove hazardous portion of waste from non hazardous portion.Bamboo : Is becoming increasingly popular for making casings for computers and peripherals. 10. Benefits of Green Computing Energy saving and resources can actually save money in the long run. Environment friendly. Save more money per year. Less energy is required to go about producing, using and disposing certain products, so this is naturally a huge benefit. Can give you a tax right off.Reduce paper. Reduce the use of hazardous material. Reduce dependence. 11. The Global Impact of Billions of PCs A simple questions! How many computers are in use? According to a report by Forrester Research, by the end of 2008, there were over one billion PCs in use worldwide. As PC adaptation grows globally, it is estimated that there will be more than two billion PCs in use by 2015. it took 7 years to reach one billion (from 2008) but will take only 7 more years to double the number. The Graph on the RIGHT shows: The benefits of green computing are clear. As the number of PCs approaches 2 Billion by 2015, the potential savings related to energy use, CO2 emissions and e-waste are undeniable. 12. Drawbacks High start-up cost.No readily available.Still in experimental stages.Sacrifice performance for battery life. Not for everyone.Quite costly. 13. General TacticsUse the hibernate of sleep mode when you are away from the computer for extended periods.Use flat screens or LCD monitors instead of Conventional Cathode Ray Tube monitors. 14. Continued. Buy energy efficient notebook computers instead of Desktop computers.Active the power management feature for controlling energy consumption.Make proper arrangement for safe electronic waste disposal.Turn off computers at the end of each day.Refill printer cartridge rather than buying new ones.Instead of purchasing new computers, try refurbishing an existing device. 15. The use Of BLACKLE Blackle is a website powered by Google custom search and created by Heap Media which aims to save energy by displaying a black background and using greyish-white font colour for search results. It is a basic solution which comes in handy when it comes to save energy.Blackle saves energy because the screen in predominantly black.Setting Blackle as the default search engine will definitely take us to Green Computing. 16. Conclusion Green computing can lead to a lot of energy savings, reduction in emission of CO2 and CFCs which leads to environment protection. It also leads to serious cost savings overtime.Green computing is also known as Green information technology. If NComputing were used at a ratio of 6 N devices then: 1.Energy use would decline by over 143 billion kilowatt hours per year2.CO2 emissions would decrease by 114 million metric tons. Thats like planting 550 million trees!3.E-waste would be reduced by 7.9 million metric tons 17. Can IT solve our crisis Green Computing 18.
