Introduction

• “Going green with Computers ”

• “Green computing – great computing ”– Storage devices , networking and communication system efficiently and

effectively with no impact on the environment

Page 4: Green Computing

Why Green• Overall energy cost need to be reduced

• Environment friendliness is important

• Computing –Centre power cost have more Than doubled in five years

• More utilization of power and money

Page 5: Green Computing

Problem• It is estimated that out of $250 Billion per year spent on powering computers

worldwide only about 15%of that power is spent computing –the rest is wasted idling .

• Data centre are the main energy consumer . Energy consumed by data centre in the US and World Wide Double from 2000 to 2005.

• To Keep server at the right temperature , companies mainly rely on Air condition equipment .

• The SMEs will not be interested right now to change their IT infrastructure to green computing .

– Until the cost is recovered from the old infrastructure

Page 6: Green Computing

What can we do to go green•Purchase flat screen monitors

•Unplug the electronics if not in use

•Consider a smaller monitor – a 14 inch uses 40% less energy than a 17 inch .•Enable the stand by / sleep mode and power management setting on your computer .

•Power off your monitor when you are not using it instead of using screen saver

What can we do to go green(cont..)

• Kill the vampires : Anything that uses a remote continues to consume power even when it’s turned off .- According the department of Energy “Vampire energy loss ” represents between 5 to 8 % of a energy bill .

• U.S agency launch Energy Star , labeling program buy energy star labeled instrument .

Page 8: Green Computing

Pros and consPROS

1.Reduce power cost

2.Save Money

3.Be environmentally responsible

CONS

1.Initial setup cost

2.Consumer cared only about speed and price

3. Confusion to end users

Page 9: Green Computing

Benefits of green computing • It save the resources of the country as a

whole

• In the long term these green equipment will be less costly without hidden cost .

• Minimized the power bill .

• Reducing global warming .

To summarize• Green computing is a novel and an innovative trend in the world of computing which has minimum or no impact on the environment.

• Green computing has introduced a range of equipments and technologies which help in limiting the impact on the environment.

•Building a healthy and safe place to live .
