PARISH NEWS June 2015

Following the damage to roadside verges on Church Road and the subsequent re-pairs which have taken place, the Parish Council are informed that Cambridge-shire Highways consider the repairs to be sufficient and therefore, no further work will be done.

News from the District Council concerns the pro-posed development of housing at RAF Brampton. Following changes to planning laws, the first tranche of housing will consist of 402 homes, none of which are to be affordable homes. Later development will consist of 130 homes, again, none of which will be affordable housing.

Since affordable housing is mostly required by young families with small children, the policy appears to be at odds with the enlargement of the primary school facilities to accommodate the numbers of children which would have been expected from families in af-fordable homes.

The Local Government Boundary Commission has drafted its recommendations for new electoral ar-rangements for Cambridgeshire County Council. Un-der the proposals, Grafham will be grouped with Brampton, Buckden, Southoe, Midloe, Diddington and the Offords. What this means for Grafham is hardly noticeable, but for our County and District councillors it will mean a heavier workload, with the potential for not being able to attend Parish Council meetings so frequently. Some new divisions will have as many as 23 parishes. Implementation of the new arrangements will come in 2017. Further information can be found at www.lgbce.org.uk

The ultimate effect is likely to be less support for many parishes at a time when the County and District Councils are recommending the devolvement of pow-ers to the Parish Councils.

The next Parish Council meeting will be held on 14th

July 2015, 7.30pm at the village hall.

Grafham Cricket Club After the first two games of the season being home and away, the next three games of the season were all away.

The first away game of the three was against Hexton CC; a village off the A6, and approximately 7 miles north of Luton. The Hexton cricket ground is pictur-esque, surrounded on one side by a wood and the rest by country hedgerows. The ground had long bounda-ries, and a batting pitch that had less life than the Dead Sea. Grafham were put into bat, and found runs hard to come by, with only Rob Forsdick truly putting bat to ball; scoring 35 including a 6 into the trees by the Pavilion. Matt Fryer hit a 6 over the long boundary, while next ball he stoically watched: as it hit his stumps. These two were the only players to make double figures. Grafham finished their in-nings on a 100 all out.

The pick of the Grafham bowlers in Hexton’s reply was Captain Tom Chester (3wkts off 9 overs for 14 runs) and Jonathan Leder-man (15 runs for 3 wkts off 6.4 overs), with Hexton fin-ishing 71 all out, Grafham winning by 29 runs.

The next away game was against Road Runners, whose ground is in Houghton Regis near Dunstable. The game was played on a warm summer’s day, with Grafham being put into bat first. Grafham started at 20:20 pace with Imran Ansari, scoring an attractive 50, supported by Will Lancaster 46, a quick-fire cameo from Rob Forsdick of 30 runs from 6 balls, followed by a re-strained but rapid 41 from Tom Chester and a 17 not out from our youngest player James Gould, left

Grafham 239 for 9 at the close of the 45 overs.

Road Runners were never in the chase for the Grafham’s total, as tight bowling from Grafham’s two opening bowlers restricted Road Runners’ total to less than 25 in the first 12 overs. James Gould in his first overs for the club took (2 wkts for 26 runs off 7 overs), with Road Runners all out for 100 runs.

The third away game was against Bedford 2nd XI at their Church Lane ground. The batting track had County Standard all over its shaved surface. Much to

Grafham’s surprise Bedford put Grafham in first, on this paradisiacal batting surface. Grafham put this oppor-tunity to good use, by scoring steadily, with Will Lancas-ter top scoring on 92 not out, ably supported by Ben McCutcheon 32, and other members of the team con-tributing double digit scores with Grafham scoring 247 all out.

Bedford in reply made a steady and stubborn start with their openers putting on 82 runs for the first wicket, but after that there was a steady fall of wickets until the

completion of their 45 overs left them on 161 for 9.

Grafham have now won all of their first five games, leaving us leading Division 3 of the Bed-ford Saturday Invitation League by 7 points.

July 2015 7 Issue 127

We have three beautiful church buildings in the villages of Brampton, Ellington and Grafham, and each has a loyal congregation but I wonder have you ever stopped and wondered why the church exists? What is it for?

Most people living in Brampton, Ellington and Grafham are deeply attached to their village church, even if they never (or only occasionally) attend.

In his Presidential Address to General Synod recently the Archbishop of Canterbury said this about the Church:

“I want to start by saying just two simple sentences about the church,” Welby began. “First, the church ex-ists to worship God in Jesus Christ. Second, the Church exists to make new disciples of Jesus Christ. Everything else is decoration. Some of it may be very necessary, useful, or wonderful decoration – but it’s decoration.”

Having just celebrated Pentecost and Trinity Sunday the Church of England is now entering Ordinary Time, which lasts until November. As the name suggests dur-ing Ordinary Time there are no major feasts or liturgical celebrations, so we must learn to live in the ordinary and hum-drum times when nothing particularly amazing will happen. There are no big parties, very little liturgi-cal variation and the altar frontals, clergy vestments and other adornments remain green.

We live in a world that encourages us to seek, or at least leads us to expect, one mountain top experience after another. This begins in schools where all lessons

must, it seems, be fun and carries on into adult life with advertising and marketing telling us to splash out and indulge ourselves because we’re worth it! But the reality of life is that much of it is pretty routine and going to work full-time and/or raising a family isn’t always terribly exciting. Bins have to be emptied, cleaning undertaken, and washing, ironing and shop-ping must all be done.

Some people become disillusioned with the lack of ex-citement; they leave their spouses for someone or something more exciting. They self-medicate with sex, shopping, alcohol, food or drugs. Living with the ordi-nary is not always as easy as you might think. Unless, that is, you have a clear sense of purpose. If you know who you are and why you are on this planet you are more likely to be living a happy and fulfilled life say doctors and psychologists. Knowing what is really im-portant and what is “decoration” is, it turns out, the key to thriving both in “ordinary” life and any other endeav-our.

My prayer for the churches in Brampton, Ellington and Grafham over the next few months is that we will learn even more about what it means to worship God and make new disciples. That we will be able to discern more clearly than ever what is core to our identity as Christians and what isn’t and that we will make the main thing the main thing!

First Steps to Health 1180 local people told us what their First Steps to Health would be, in an innovative survey to find out about people's attitudes to using primary care ser-vices.

We wanted to know what you would do about different health problems that you or someone you knew was experi-encing. Would you treat it yourself, search for information, see a pharmacist, call NHS 111 or visit your GP?

We found most people could manage without medical ad-vice on some health issues but not others; there were al-ways some people whose first step would be to ask for a GP appointment. Our evidence suggests that people are

not always aware of, or using the al-ternatives available.

Most people were positive about expe-riences of using local GP surgeries, although some people told us about negative experiences with front line staff and problems with systems for

getting emergency appointments.

In our First Steps to Health report we have made recom-mendations to the local health commissioners and GP Practices, to help people get the care they need from the best people to provide it.

July 2015 9 Issue 127

An event to welcome the newest foster carers to Cam-bridgeshire County Council’s fostering service was held last week. The last 12 months have seen a record breaking 32 new families from across Cambridgeshire become foster carers with the local authority and many of these new carers attended to join the celebrations.

David and Jennifer from Huntingdonshire (pictured third and fourth from right) said “We have been foster-ing since January and have had 2 placements. We have three children of our own and they have all found the experience very positive. It can be difficult to hear some of the backgrounds children in care come from but it is rewarding to see the change you can make. We have seen the children in our care quickly grow in confidence and hopefully face a more positive future.”

Jill Blose, Service Manager for Foster-ing said “We extend a huge thank you to all of our new foster carers, many of whom are already providing safe and loving homes to local children and young people unable to live with their own fami-lies. However, we urgently need even more people in Cam-bridgeshire to follow in their footsteps and consider fostering. We are particularly keen to hear from people who feel they are able to foster old-

er children and young people.”

To be a foster carer you need to be over 21. You don’t need to own your home, but you do need to have a spare room. Foster carers can be single, married, in a civil partnership or living with a partner. Sue Ryder – St John’s Hospice celebrated Volun-teers’ Week (1st-7th June) with a long service awards ceremony on 3rd June, to help recognise volunteers who have supported the hospice for a number of years, including one volunteer who has contributed more than 25 years’ service.

Volunteers support the Hospice in a range of roles such as gardening, fundraising, ambassa-dors, retail, bereavement and our befriending ser-vice. We also offer bespoke roles for people with specific interests or specialist skills.

Our volunteers are priceless as they help Sue Ryder raise vital funds to continue to provide incred-ible hospice and neurological care for people living with end of life and long-term conditions including; cancer, stroke, brain injury, multi-ple sclerosis, dementia, Hunting-ton’s Disease, Parkinson’s Disease and motor neurone disease.

Individuals volunteering with Sue Ryder – St John’s will know that their efforts really do make a differ-ence, but it’s not just one way; Vol-

unteers can also gain invaluable work experience and develop skills needed to thrive in a work en-vironment. We try to match a volunteer’s inter-ests, skills and aspirations to the roles needed by the charity, to ensure a positive and rewarding experience.

Visit the Sue Ryder – St John’s Hospice website for information on volunteering opportunities on www.sueryder.org/stjohns

Bust of Gaius Julius Caesar in the National Archaeological Museum of Naples. Photo taken by Andreas Wahra in March 1997

Julius Caesar and July Gaius Julius Caesar July 100 BC – 15th March 44 BC was a Roman statesman, a general and a notable author of Latin prose. He played a critical role in the events that led to the demise of the Roman Republic and the rise of the Roman Empire .

July is the seventh month of the year (between June and August) in the Julian and Gregorian Calendars and one of seven months with the length of 31 days. Itwas named by the Roman Senate in honour of Julius Caesar, as it was the month of his birth.

July's birthstone is the ruby, which symbolizes content-ment. Its birth flowers are the Larkspur or the Water Lily. The zodiac signs for the month of July are Cancer (until 22nd July) and Leo (23rd July onwards).
