We welcomed Dr. Jim Kieffer as Associate Dean on the Saint John campus and Dr. Kevin Englehart as Associ- ate Dean in Fredericton, both replacing predecessors in these roles. And soon we will welcome Dr. Sasha Mullally to the decanal team in Fredericton, replacing Dr. Heather Sears who this year completes her very successful tenure in the SGS. Critically for our students, we secured significant addi- tional funding from a variety of sources, including PETL, NBIF and UNB, for a combined total of approxi- mately $1 million in new graduate student support. And the graduate students themselves enjoyed excep- tional success in the annual Tri-Council scholarship competitions obtaining approximately $1.5 million in scholarship support across the SSHRC, NSERC and CIHR programs. Please see subsequent pages for de- tails on these and other awards and recognitions for our many talented students. Speaking of talented students, the photo on the left features this year’s six student finalists in our annual 3MT (Three-Minute-Thesis) Challenge alongside Presi- dent Eddy Campbell and the members of the SGS De- canal team. The students are smiling, in part, because of the cheques they earned for their excellent presen- tations! The top finisher (Barbora Balanova – PhD can- didate in Chemistry: back row, second from left) went on to represent UNB at the Eastern Regional 3MT Challenge held at McGill University. Congratulations to all who participated in the 3MT! And many thanks to Dr. Heather Sears (front right) who, once again, coordi- nated this year’s successful instalment of the 3MT. This year, the 3MT event was paired with the 26 th an- nual Graduate Research Conference (aka, the GRC), which was itself another excellent event, showcasing the exceptional research being done by the wider grad- uate student community at UNB. Congratulations to all the students who participated in the GRC and to the many students, faculty and staff who helped organize it, with special thanks to Andrea Rivera, Brittany Dixon and Bipin Kumar from the Graduate Student Associa- tion (GSA) who spear-headed planning and implemen- tation of this year’s GRC. Message from the Dean
School of Graduate Studies (SGS)
The 2018/19 academic year was another busy and
productive one for the School of Graduate Studies! We
welcomed Dr. Jim Kieffer as Associate Dean on the
Saint John campus and Dr. Kevin Englehart as Associ-
ate Dean in Fredericton, both replacing predecessors
in these roles. And soon we will welcome Dr. Sasha
Mullally to the decanal team in Fredericton, replacing
Dr. Heather Sears who this year completes her very
successful tenure in the SGS.
Critically for our students, we secured significant addi-
tional funding from a variety of sources, including
PETL, NBIF and UNB, for a combined total of approxi-
mately $1 million in new graduate student support.
And the graduate students themselves enjoyed excep-
tional success in the annual Tri-Council scholarship
competitions obtaining approximately $1.5 million in
scholarship support across the SSHRC, NSERC and
CIHR programs. Please see subsequent pages for de-
tails on these and other awards and recognitions for
our many talented students.
