The Marcellus Shale Coalition's (MSC) Research Collaborative is sponsoring a Technology Showcase fo-rum as a pre-conference event prior to the SHALE GAS INSIGHT™ 2013 conference in Philadelphia, PA to provide suppliers of emerging technologies an opportunity to showcase their innovation to the nat-ural gas producer, midstream pipeline, and service community. The pre-conference Technology Showcase presentations will be on September 24, 2013, at the Pennsylvania Convention Center from 9:00 AM – 11:30 AM.
The Research Collaborative is seeking applications from technology providers who are interested in pre-senting to the natural gas community their technology that is ready for “field test”. The technology should be ready for pilot testing, slip stream or full scale at a natural gas drilling site in the Marcellus shale, Utica shale or at a coal-bed methane or coal-mine methane site. Selected suppliers will be allowed to deliver an 8-minute presentation followed by a 2-minute Q&A. Up to twelve companies will be selected to present in this forum.
To be considered for presentation, the application, available at http://shaleinsight.com/technology-showcase/, must be completed and submitted to the email address listed on the application by the dead-line of July 3, 2013. A selection committee of MSC Research Collaborative members will review the ap-plications and notify the selected presenters by August 5th. A detailed event schedule will be provided by September 11th.

GPAEE BOARD MEMBERS VISIT FUTURE CITY AWARD WINNER
ST. ELIZABETH PARISH
On Thursday May 23rd,GPAEE Board Members, Jim Clark & Mike Sanders ventured out to Uwchlan Township, Chester County (just north of Exton, Pa.) to host lunch with the Future City 2013 GPAEE Chapter Award winning school, St Elizabeth Parish School. St Elizabeth School is only 5 years old and has embraced many 21st Century energy-savings technologies. What a special place to earn an education. Jim & Mike hosted approximately 20 students from the 6th & 7th grade classes, as well as their teacher and 2013 Future Cities mentor, Bill Kuhn. The students challenged them with questions about many ener-gy related topics including: 1) What are the hosts opinion of "fracking" 2) What are the plans for natural gas fueled vehicles? 3) Do refineries really pollute as shown on television? 4) What jobs do the members of your chapter hold? There were many questions, some very timely and some very difficult however Jim and Mike gave knowl-edgeable and though provoking answers. We thank everyone involved in the Future City program for their participation in the day. We acknowledge the hard work, time and dedication of the teachers, men-tors, students and GPAEE board members in making the Future City program a priority in their educa-tion.
In the summer of 2008, two natural gas import terminals opened along the U.S. Gulf Coast: one in Freeport, Tex., and the other about 140 miles northeast near the mouth of the Sabine River in Louisiana. The projects signaled America’s growing dependence on foreign energy. Prices had more than doubled over the previous year: More imports from places such as Qatar and Yemen seemed like the only option. (more)
Largest U.S. power grid operator reports energy auction prices drop amid competition
PJM Interconnection LLC, which runs the largest U.S. power grid, said consumer costs to in-sure adequate generating capacity in the year starting June 2016 will drop 56 percent amid competition from new plants fueled by natural gas. Payments to power-plant owners will decline to $59.37 a megawatt per day from $136 in the previous 12-month period, based on the results of an annual PJM auction held May 13 through May 17. (more)
Power Grid Getting Smarter With Big Battery
Research conducted with a large new battery unveiled today in Oregon will help make the Northwest's and the nation's electric system smarter and more efficient, officials said at a rib-bon-cutting ceremony. Portland General Electric's 5-megawatt, lithium-ion energy storage system was shared with the public today at the utility's Salem Smart Power Center in South Salem, Ore. The energy storage facility is part of PGE's contribution to the Battelle-led Pacific Northwest Smart Grid Demon-stration Project. Half of PGE's $23-million portion of the regional project was paid for with U.S. Department of Energy funds. The regional demonstration is a five-year, $178-million pro-ject that launched in 2010. The US Shale-Gas Revolution and European Renewables: Divergence and Co-operation in Alternative Energy
That the United States and Europe have been following different energy policies over the past few decades won't come as a surprise. However, according to one researcher, their divergence -- with the US leading 'the shale gas revolution' and Europe investing heavily in modern re-newables -- is a good thing for the development of both alternative-energy sources. Writing in the Journal of Transatlantic Studies, Marianne Haug of the University of Hohen-heim argues that although the transatlantic energy partners continue to be committed to com-mon goals -- namely energy security, environmental sustainability and economic competitive-ness -- the relative priority given to each has changed substantially since the early 1990s. Do-mestic issues, geopolitical concerns, differing resource bases, changing energy markets, govern-ment policy, public opinion, the accession of new countries to the EU and the choices of in-vestors have all altered the landscape. To address these new challenges, both the US and Eu-rope have jointly and separately reached out to new markets, partners and collaboration ar-rangements. (more)
