Message from Monsignor René Mathieu (1) All are welcome to the 5th Annual Good Shepherd Parish Picnic
at St. Philip in Lyman this Sunday, September 7, Noon-3:00 pm. Ham-
burgers, hotdogs and beverages are free but parishioners are invited to
bring a (peanut-free) dessert to share. You may also want to bring a
lawn chair for your comfort. Entertainment will include games, live
music by the Jandreau family, and a magician! Rain or shine. (2) Many
parish ministries resume in September after the summer rest. More information is
available elsewhere in this bulletin and on the parish website but here is a summary
of some of them: Women’s Book Study (began 9/4 but newbies welcome!); Letter to
the Galatians with Fr. Ron Labarre (9/9); St. Vincent de Paul Society thrift shop re-
opens (9/10); Interviews on The Presence Radio: Fr. Dickinson & Fr. Ron Labarre
(9/11); Msgr. Mathieu & Liz Williams (9/12); Men’s group, That Man Is You (9/13);
Family Catechesis at MHT (9/14); Children’s Faith Formation at St. Philip (9/14) &
St. Margaret (9/15); Middle School & High School youth ministry (9/21); Protecting
God’s Children class (9/27). (3) Upcoming changes in the seasonal Mass sched-
ule: The summer Sunday Mass schedule (8 am & 9:30 am) will continue at Saint
Margaret in Old Orchard Beach through September 14 and then return to the usual
weekend schedule on September 20/21 (4 pm, 8:30 am, 10:30 am). A Saturday 5:30pm
Mass continues at Saint Brendan in Biddeford Pool through October 11 (Columbus
Day weekend). I thank everyone involved for their cooperation.
(4) Improvements: At St. Margaret Church, a contractor has scraped, sanded,
primed and painted the exterior wood trim of the church. The building is covered
with aluminum so we are addressing all exposed wood for now except for the highest
points. The new doors have been adjusted, and some safety issues dealt with near
entrances. At St. Joseph Church, we are demolishing the old kitchen and bathroom
area in the back of the basement to reorganize the space for additional storage and
better use of those areas (& that is why there is a dumpster near Decary Center). Out-
side, masons have begun repointing the church to address cracking, receding and
missing mortar from brick joints. The project should seal and improve the integrity
of the wall structure. A new roof now covers the Chapel at St Joseph’s Cemetery.
Some trees had to be trimmed to gain access to the area but this will also help protect
the new roof. In addition, the trim at the extreme peak has been painted (this was an
area that could not be reached by our staff due to work height restrictions and there-
fore had not been touched in quite some time). The perimeter of the building has
been cleaned. We may consider some additional maintenance for the chapel includ-
ing power washing of the building and painting the doors and door trim. At some
point in the next few years, we want to consider painting the interior of the chapel
and replacing the flooring, as these items are original to the building which was built
almost 30 years ago. (5) Thank You of the Week: to the Knights of Columbus for
covering the cost of food and beverages served at our parish picnic. Thank you!
Jokes Priests Can Tell, Volume 4 by Msgr. Arthur Tonne: Grandpa was telling his ten-year-old grandson, Bobby about the good old days.
Bobby asked: “Grandpa, what’s the difference between the time when you were ten
years old and today?” “For one thing, son,” replied grandpa, “we used to eat indoors
and go to the toilet outdoors; now we eat outdoors and go to the toilet indoors.”
