GOOD SHEPHERD PARISH
Message from Monsignor René Mathieu
(1) St. Margaret parking: To mention one last time: Because of a
racing event in Old Orchard Beach this Sunday, August 24, church
goers are asked to refrain from parking on Saco Avenue along the
church during Masses Sunday morning. Old Orchard Street will be
closed to traffic to allow for race participants. Our parking lots and
Staples Street will be available for parking, but the bottom of Staples
Street will be closed off so you will obliged to enter and exit via Saco Avenue. (2)
Please note changes in the seasonal Mass schedule: On Wednesday, September 3,
the 8:00 am summertime Mass at Saint Margaret in Old Orchard Beach will transfer
to Saint Joseph in Biddeford at 9:00 am to benefit St. James Catholic School stu-
dents until school closes for the summer next June. Saint Brendan in Biddeford Pool
is celebrating its final 9:30 am Sunday Mass of the season on September 7; the 5:30
pm Mass on Saturdays will continue at that location through October 11 (Columbus
Day weekend). The summer Sunday Mass schedule (8 am & 9:30 am) will continue
at Saint Margaret in Old Orchard Beach through September 14 and then return to
the usual weekend schedule on September 20/21 (4 pm, 8:30 am, 10:30 am). I thank
everyone involved for their cooperation. (3) As of August 19, a total of $10,930 has
been received toward the cost of repairing St. Luke Chapel in Old Orchard Beach.
I am grateful for those who have contributed so far but note we have a long way to
go to reach the estimated $50,000 - $60,000 needed for the project. (4) Recently, a
summer visitor donated a brand new Lighthouse Catholic Media Kiosk. Located in
the gathering space at Most Holy Trinity Church, it is filled with Catholic themed
pamphlets and CDs. Among those featured on the CDs are Scott Hahn, Fr. Larry
Richards, Matthew Kelly, Fr. Michael Schmitz, Mark Hart and Michael Barber. A
donation of $3 is requested for each CD and 50 cents per brochure. All funds collect-
ed from the kiosk will be used to refill the kiosk from time to time. This generous
donation is valued at $857! (5) Did you know? The Sign of the Cross is an im-
portant part of Catholic piety. It is a profession of belief both in the Holy Trinity &
in the Incarnation and dates to Christianity’s earliest centuries. Saint Augustine of
Hippo (who lived 345-430) described it many times in his sermons and writings.
Whenever I sign a child for the first time at their baptism and then invite the parents
and godparents to do the same, I can’t help asking myself what the saving cross of
Christ will mean for that new Christian in the years ahead. (6) Thank You of the
Week: To the Knights of Columbus and our Worship & Spirituality Commission for
sponsoring the altar servers event on August 17. Thank you!
Jokes Priests Can Tell, Volume 4 by Msgr. Arthur Tonne:
As the boat was sinking, the skipper lifted his voice to ask: “Does anyone know how
to pray?” One man spoke confidently to answer: “Yes, Captain, I do.”
The captain nodded: “That’s all right then,” he declared. “You go ahead and pray.
The rest of us will put on life jackets. We’re one short.”

A special message for summer visitors:
Welcome to Good Shepherd Parish, which con-
sists of 4 churches: Most Holy Trinity in Saco,
Saint Joseph in Biddeford, St. Margaret in Old
Orchard Beach and St. Philip in Lyman. We also
have two summer chapels, St. Brendan in
Biddeford Pool and St. Luke in Old Orchard
Beach. You may have noticed that St. Luke is not
open this summer because it is in need of a new
roof and ventilation system. Our parish owns 15
properties, 6 of which are listed for sale at this
time. All our properties are in need of improve-
ments aimed at increasing the useful life of a
building or adding to its value. These projects
result in considerable financial stress for the
parish. In particular, the cost of repairing the roof
and ventilation system in St. Luke is about $50-
60,000. Therefore, we have begun a capital fund
campaign to help pay for repairing the roof and
ventilation system. If you enjoy worshiping at St.
Luke in the summer months and would like to
help us raise funds for this purpose, you may send
a check to the parish office or go to the parish
website at www.GoodShepherdParish.us and
click “Online Giving,” where you will find a
donation opportunity for St. Luke Chapel; you
may also contact our finance coordinator, David
Gadbois, at the parish office. Thank you for your
consideration. Although our buildings are of great
concern, even greater is our mission of bringing
the gospel of Christ to our parishioners and to all
around us. There is good news in that regard.
From a global perspective, we have Pope Francis
admired throughout the world. The appointment
of Bishop Robert Deeley as the new Bishop of
Portland in February has been an exciting and
positive experience. In early April, a parish mis-
sion led by Fr. Larry Richards (well known on
Catholic Radio) attracted over 1100 people to
attend each of the four evenings. The mission had
a strong spiritual impact on those who attended
and continues to influence the lives of many
parishioners. I find in these combined experiences
signs of faith and hope for the Catholic Church in
Maine and for our parish in particular. We appre-
ciate the prayerful support of Catholics who visit
us from elsewhere; your presence enlivens us
during the summer months. May you have an
enjoyable, restful & peaceful vacation in Maine!
