The Men’s Soccer team celebrated winning their second national championship this year in Halifax against the University of British Columbia. This is the first ever Golden Hawk team to win back-to-back national titles. They fought through the cold winds and sore muscles to bring the national title back to Waterloo. The team finished their regular season with a 7-2-1 record, as they headed into the OUA playoffs. After winning the first two playoff games against McMaster (3-1) and Toronto (2-1), the Hawks advanced to the OUA gold medal game against Waterloo, los- ing 2-1. Although this loss was heartbreaking, the team still had an opportunity for the national title as the top two teams advanced to the CIS championships. Upon arriving in Halifax, the Hawks first played St. Mary’s University and tied 3-3. Their second game against UQTR resulted in a 4-1 win which advanced them to the cham- pionship game to be played against UBC. When the game was tied 1-1 at the half, the Hawks increased their intensity. With only 2 minutes left in the game, First Team All Canadian, Wojchiech Cwik, scored the win- ning goal allowing the Hawks to once again be titled National Champions! The Women’s Hockey team finished their season with an outstanding record of 23 wins, 1 loss and 1 tie. They won a silver medal in the CIS national championship after losing a hard fought game to the Alberta Pandas with a final score of 5-2. After finishing an undefeated regular sea- son, the Lady Hawks continued their winning ways in the OUA playoffs. Upon defeating Queen’s 3-2 in the semi-final game, the Hawks went on to win the OUA Championship against Toronto 2-1. In CIS playoff action, the Hawks trav- eled to Regina where they were victorious in their first two games, beating St. FX, 3-2 and Regina 2-1. The gold medal game was played against the number one ranked Alberta Pandas. Trailing 3-0 after the first, the Hawks came back to score 2 in the second, finishing the game with a final score of 5-2. First year goalie, Cindy Eadie had an outstanding game allowing the Hawks to stay within reach of the Pandas. Teamwork is the DestinationPeter Baxter - Director of AthleticsOver the past three years, since the beginning of our Golden Hawk Club, our WLU Department of Athletics, together with our Alumni and friends, have tapped the synergy of teamwork. The experience of team alignment can take place on an ever-increasing basis. At the bottom of this message, we have outlined the expenditures we have made with your generous donations. The expenditures are targeted for enhancements to the program above and beyond base budget and allowed us to build teamwork into our teams in the following ways:1) Alumni Support have Assisted Acquisition of Top Talent: Your donations have assisted us in hiring some of Canada’s best coaches and recruiters of student-athletes in the

country and abroad.2) Alumni Support has Demonstrated and Developed Strong Leadership: Alumni support has assisted us in providing sport psy-chology, nutritional, medical, and academic support directly to our student-athletes. Alumni volunteers have not only given their financial support but have put in countless hours to support our program as announcers, timers, medical staff, equipment managers, statisticians and fundraisers. This Alumni commitment shows the way and motivates our play-ers.3) Alumni Support Encouraged Team Commitment: Through support of exhibition schedules and team equipment enhancements, your support has been meaningful to our players and coaches. You have instilled loyalty to the Golden Hawk program, a sense of mission, and a commitment to quality, excellence and competitiveness within our student-athletes.

Adopt A Golden Hawk

Program

The Golden Hawks have a proud tradition of excellence and achievement in athletics, aca-demics and within the commu-nity. Whether it be an Academic All-Canadian Award, winning league championships or pro-viding mentorship for local KW children, the Golden Hawks lead by example. The Golden Hawks invite everyone to play a role in the student-athlete experience by “adopting” an athlete. The Adopt-A-Golden Hawk pro-gram is more than a fundraiser; it is an opportunity for the com-munity, alumni and corporate sector to support a specific team, while at the same time becoming involved with a specific student-athlete. Laurier Athletics places a great deal of importance on the student athlete experience from year one orientation through to graduation. The Golden Hawk Student Athlete Development Program also assists them in pursuing post-graduate studies and job placements. Last year marked the first season of the program with the successful adoption of over 40 Golden Hawk athletes. Any contribution will help enhance the student-athlete experience and assist them in achieving their academic and athletic success. For more information on participating in the Adopt-A-Golden Hawk program please contact Roland Webster at [email protected]

Message fromThe Golden Hawk Club

President

The Golden Hawk Club is beginning to feel the impact of our involvement and investment in athletics. Created as a means to con-tinue the tradi-

tion and pride we had when we attended WLU, we have witnessed growth and improvement in the athletics program both on and off the field. This has been a great year for men’s and women’s athletics and all sports continue to move forward. These achievements would not have been realized without the assistance of Peter Baxter, Director of Athletics and Recreation. Peter has always lis-tened to alumni and held their opinions and considerations in high regards. He shares in our view of the tradition and excellence of Laurier Athletics. However, it takes our input and monetary sup-port for this tradition to continue. As government funding is con-stantly dropping, our external sup-port allows the athletics depart-ment to establish and maintain the quality of athletics at WLU. Laurier Athletics has shown a commitment to provid-ing the community with a level of entertainment that rivals profes-sional sports. Athletics enriched our lives as students, giving us an opportunity to express ourselves. Together, we can recapture the past and look to live in the future by helping build the best athletic program in Canada. I invite all WLU Alumni to come witness the talent and drive of our athletes and to provide moral and financial support. See you at the game!

Coffee, smiles and good company was always provided by long time Laurier employee, Eileen Stumpf. Eileen’s presence was felt at Laurier for 24 years as she served coffee in the concourse and worked in the torque room up until 1987. Whether it was by hiding extra bacon under the toast, giving out free milkshakes to the championship basketball team or buying new employ-ees their first coffee, Eileen always did everything to ensure that the Golden Hawks were well nourished!

Specific athletes of her time or “hunnies”, as she refers to them included the faces of Roger Passmore, Paul Giannelia, Scott Fraser, Ken Seiling, John Watson, Paul Markle, Paul Heinbecker, Pat Blakham, Sandy Nixon, Glenn Wilkie, Marcia Powers-Dunlop, Barry Irwin and Jake Arnott to name a few.

Eileen has lived on Hazel St. for the past 54 years with her husband of 58 years, Hubert Stumpf. Her family has

expanded to include 6 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren, which keep her very busy in her

spare time. She is also involved in a bowling league, which meets every week in the fall and winter. Eileen continues to support Laurier Athletes through her generous donations which are evenly divided between her “girls” and “boys”. Her strong desire to make people happy and genuine caring nature is why Eileen Stumpf will always be a part of Laurier history and remembered by all!

Still Loving Laurier, Life and . . . Coffee!

Teamwork, sweat and determination led the 1992 Women’s soccer team to become the first ever to bring home a national title for women’s soccer. The team will be honoured for their accomplishments at this year’s Annual Hall of Fame induction ceremony held on Friday September 20th, 2002. The Lady Hawks finished their regular sea-son in 3rd place as they headed into the OWIAA Championship. They began the championship tournament with a 3-2 win over Queen’s and went on to play McMaster, losing 2-1 in over-time. The team advanced to the bronze medal game against Toronto, where they were victori-ous, winning 3-1. With two third place finishes, the ladies went onto the CIAU finals focused and ready to work hard. In the first game against McMaster, the Ladies had to play through harsh weather conditions. The rain and puddles made com-pleting plays very difficult. However, the Hawks prevailed and left the field with a 1-0 victory after Lisa Wannan scored with 50 sec-onds left in the game. In the second day of play, the weather cleared up and the Hawks went to battle with St. Mary’s. The Hawk’s dominated the play throughout the game with many good scoring opportunities however the St. Mary’s keeper made goals difficult. With twenty minutes left of play, the Hawks picked things up with 5 goals. There 5-0 win qualified them to play in the national championship game against McGill. Goal scorers of the game were Helen Stoumbos with 2, Sheri Cotton, Lisa Wannan and Camilla Vejvalka. As Sunday rolled around, the rain turned to snow and the Hawks laced up for the final championship game. The first half began with Helen Stoumbos scoring a corner kick past the McGill keeper. The remainder of the half was controlled by McGill, but the Hawks turned

things around in the second half. As players had to control their footing in the slippery, snow covered grass, the Hawks continued their attack on McGill. The whistle blew with a final score of 1-0, ending the game and the season, crown-ing the Golden Hawks as national champions! The WLU Cord quotes the Ladies perfor-mance saying, “the strong backing of the team may have made the difference in the final as the girls played harder as the cheering got louder”, (1992 Cord). The victory brought rookie coach, Peter Hammermueller to shaving his mustache in honour of the Hawks new national title. The victories of the 1992 Women’s team was just the beginning for the Laurier Soccer Program. Many of the team members continued the trend winning another national champion-ship in 1995 and two provincial championships in 1993 & 1995. Since then the Hawks have cel-ebrated the winnings of the Men’s Soccer back to back national championships in 2001 and 2002, along with the 2000 provincial champion-ships. As the Laurier soccer program continues to grow, make sure YOU take advantage of the opportunity to help support your Golden Hawks.

Corporate Dinner

Another Success!

The third annual Friends of Golden Hawk Football Reception and Dinner was once again a great success. This year’s event surpassed others in funds with approximately $42,000 raised through the dinner and auction. All proceeds will go towards enhancing the Golden Hawk Football program. The evening took place on May 2nd at the Four Points Sheraton Hotel in downtown Kitchener and was hosted by CH TV personality Ken Welch. The audience was enter-tained and inspired by key note speaker, Pinball Clemmons. His speech delivered a motivational message regarding the impor-tance of the 3 P’s including per-sistence, patience and passion. The goal of the evening was to bring the corporate world, alumni and friends together in the promotion of the Golden Hawk Football program. The Athletic Department would like to thank all of those who attended and generously donated to support the program. offs in a semi-final home game against Windsor, where they won 3-0. The team advanced to the gold medal game against Toronto, losing a dis-appointing match 3-2. The Golden Hawk Men’s Basketball team qualified for the playoffs this year for the first time in over a decade. The team finished their season with a 12-11 record prior to being put out by Brock in the playoffs with a final score of 63-58. The Hawks finished in 4th place in the OUA west division behind Western, Guelph and McMaster. The team has come a long way this year to improve upon last season’s record of 2-12. With 9 rookies and only one graduating player, the Hawks will be hot on the trail to the playoffs next year. The Lady Hawks Basketball team had a great start to their season by defeating last year’s OUA Champions, the Queens Golden Gaels 66-61. After qualifying for playoffs, the ladies played their first round against the Brock Badgers where they were defeated 58 - 37. The team ended their season with a 9 - 13 record and a 5th place standing in the OUA West division. The team has shown great improvement from last year’s record of 4-17 and plan on continuing their improvement through to next season. The Men’s and Women’s Curling teams both heated things up on the ice with laces tied and rocks flying. The women’s team improved their record from last year with an outstanding 13 wins and 1 loss. The team won a silver medal in the OUA championships. The Men’s team finished their season with a record of 9 wins and 6 losses. Men’s Curlers, John Morris and Brent Laing represented Ontario this past March while competing for the Nokia Brier title.
