I am a fifth generation Baptist minister. I am so grateful for the heritage of faith and ministry that my family patriarchs have passed down through the generations. However, the great cloud of witnesses that surround life and ministry for me is undoubtedly held together by the matriarchs. My mother, Alicia, has the gift of wise counsel. She will always listen more than speak and offer sincere compassion. Her compassion has influenced me in a significant way. She also showed me that ministry was a team effort as she has served the church side-by-side with my dad for forty-one years running. She is the reason I found Fallon. I was looking for someone like her, a teammate who was passionate and sincere about serving God and the church. Her mother, Ruth, turned the gift of hospitality into an art. We wouldn’t be five steps into her house before she offered us every food and comfort at her disposal. Her gift translated into the fabric of the church where she served as a deacon’s wife for more than 60 years. She was most active on the bereavement committee where she served warm meals to grieving families. Grandmom now continues to use her gift of hospitality at the assisted living facility where she lives. My grandmother on my Curry side, Alice, passed away in November. She was joy incarnate. She was always full of both laughter and tears. She loved deeply and applied it whole heartedly as she served as a pastor’s wife for decades. Her passing away this last year is heavy on my heart this Mother’s Day. One of the things I learned from her is that there is room for both laughter and tears at any given moment. I know that days like today can bring grief for those who have lost a mother or a child, or have longed for a baby. There is room for grief in our celebration of motherhood today. There is room in this House of Prayer for tears and laughter, grief and gratitude, pain and joy. God is present through His Spirit, and He draws near. A tremendous number of women use their gifts to enrich First Baptist Plano and glorify God in ways similar to the matriarchs in my family that I have mentioned. You are all mothers to the church body, whether you have ever had biological children or not. The church would not survive without these image bearers of God. We thank God for you!
