Promoting active living by offering recreational facilities and programs to the residents of Come
By Chance is an important objective of the town council. Come By Chance residents enjoy a
variety of the recreational facilities within the town.
As a part of the Town Council recreational program, Roger Goobie, Recreational Coordinate has
been appointed by Council to assist with the operation of Barachois 50 + Club.
The Club has 24 members and the group meets at the Recreational Center every Tuesday night at
7:00 p.m. with cards and games. Our Regular Meeting is held the first Tuesday of each month.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank our Past President Thelma Pevie for her years of
volunteer service to the seniors of Come By Chance.
Linda Anthony has been elected as the new President of the Barachois 50 + Club and we wish her
success in her new position.
The Club was very active in the community last year, which included planting flowers and the
annual cleanup in the town. Our members attend a vegetable garden which we do as an annual
thing.
Christmas has been a busy time for the club. We made Christmas Stockings and filled them and
exchanged them at our Annual Christmas Party. We also hosted an Annual Kris Kinglet night for
all ladies 19 and over in our town. Club members helped with the Breakfast with Santa.
One of the highlights of the year is our annual shopping trip to St. John's on a bus and we are able
to invite a friend, for this event.
We also helped out a lady going to a 3rd World Country. Made Breast Cancer Pillows twice this
year, 45 first time, and 35 second time. Made 2 quilts for daffodil house in St. John's.
We helped with the breakfast program in a local school making toutons at July 1st celebrations and helped
with Easter Bunny Breakfast.
Attended Revue 2017, celebrated Valentines Party and St. Patrick's celebrations, went to Seniors Home
in Clarenville twice and sang with them and had lunch.
Club members went to Trinity for a day outing on the bus and took in a Dinner Theatre.
It has been a very active year and we look forward to a successful 2019.

FRENCHMAN'S COVt SO PLUS INCORPORATED
Frenchman's Cove, NL
The Frenchman's Cove 50 Plus Club has a total of 31 members. Regular meetings are held on the
second Thursday of each month with the exception of July and August. We have an average of 21
members in attendance. We occupy a space in the basement of our Community Hall where we
hold our meetings and social gatherings.
We hold weekly card games every Tuesday night in the upstairs of the Community Hall. Oh boy,
can't they slam those tables !! These games are open to the public. We have an average of 20 people
in attendance with grocery prizes awarded to the winners.
We hold socials at the end of each month so our members can gather for a night out with games
of fun and laughter followed with Pass the Ace which has become very popular with our club
members. Finger foods are usually served at our monthly socials with a birthday cake for members
who have a birthday in that month.
Our kitchen committee are always eager to cook a meal for special occasions such as Christmas
Day, Mother's Day and of course our BBQ for our closeout for the summer in June.
We were honored to have Amy Farrell, Second Vice President of the Federation to join us in April,
2018 to conduct our elections since our Area Director was not available at that time. Election
results were as follows: President Matilda Alexander, Vice President Kay Cluett, Treasurer Jennie
Tibbo, Secretary Jessie Cluett. A lunch followed, of course, which was enjoyed by all.
In April we agreed to sponsor the booklet to the amount of $50.00. In June the club treated us to
our annual closeout BBQ for the summer. Fun and games followed with dancing and cards.
Weekly card games carried on over the summer with the help of some members.
We were very saddened in the month of August with the passing of two of our members; Esrom
Keeping and Ruth Royle. They will be sadly missed. Our Club provided a lunch to Ruth's familyafter the funeral service. The family were very appreciative and we were only too happy to do so.
In October we hosted our Annual Alzheimer's Coffee Break at our club, raising a total of $211.30
which was forwarded to the Alzheimer's Society.
In September we had four members attend the Federation annual Convention in Marystown which
we found very informative and thoroughly enjoyed the entertainment at night.
In November our club hosted a roast beef dinner and dance with music by Gord Drake. The meal
was delicious thanks to all who volunteered their time. Of course, the music was great! A good
time was had by all.
In December the kitchen committee served up a delicious hot turkey dinner with all the trimmings.
We had a gift exchange with a visit from Santa followed by some singing, more fun and games. A
great time was had by all!

their age-friendly communities.
To be eligible, a senior must be nominated by an individual or group, must be 50 years of age or older and
be a current or past resident of Newfoundland and Labrador. Nominees will be considered for both
voluntary and paid work. Nominations from last year will be reviewed again this year if requested by the
nominee. Posthumous awards may also be given.
Recognizing and supporting seniors builds on commitments in The Way Forward to deliver betterservices and better outcomes for residents. The Way Forward outlines all actions the Provincial
Government is taking to achieve a strong, diversified province with a high standard of living, and can be
viewed at thevvayforward.gov.nl.ca.
Quotes"We have the seniors of our province to thank for shaping this place we call home. Their hard work to
raise families and build communities is what makes us who we are today. Through the Seniors of
Distinction Awards, we have an opportunity to recognize and thank seniors for the formative impact they
have on our communities and province as a whole."
Honourable Lisa Dempster
Minister of Children, Seniors and Social Development
"Seniors continue to play a very important role in our society. The presentation of the Seniors of
Distinction Awards is one way we can celebrate and honour seniors, as well as acknowledge the many
contributions they have made. Their knowledge, coupled with a lifetime of accomplishments and tireless
volunteer work, has definitely made and will continue to make our province a better place. If you know of
someone who should be recognized as a Senior of Distinction, please consider nominating them for thisaward."

Annual Report, February 2019
The Placentia West 50+ Club Incorporated held its 15th Annual General Meeting on February 13,
2019. The Club is comprised of members from various communities throughout the Placentia
West region including; South East Eight, Petite Forte, Parker's Cove, Baine Harbour & Rushoon.
It is the mandate of the Club to provide programs and services that promote healthy active lifestyles
for its members including recreational, social and educational programs and services. Upon
reviewing the activities ongoing under the umbrella of the Club it is evident that this Club is verysuccessful in fulfilling its mandate.
The Club has a full Board of six Directors and four Executive members and a total of 62 members,
an increase of eight new members. This year the Club lost a very dedicated member Mr. Frank
Murphy. The Board has met on several occasions to discuss matters of importance to the GeneralMembership and bring back recommendations to its members for discussion and resolution. This
Board has worked very hard to meet its responsibilities of informing its membership of ongoing
events and activities. This is achieved by having Directors as callers for specific activities, as well
we have our Facebook page to share information and for those members that don't use social media
they receive individual telephone calls. This Board/Club has worked very hard at planning,
scheduling and implementing its activities and events including accommodating a special needs
member.
Recognition is well deserved, which includes "Thank Yop", to our membership because without
all of you and your continued support this Club would not be thriving as it is. A Very Special
Thank You to the executive for their tremendous work and dedication, Secretary Lillian for
keeping track of our meetings, completing the paper work including the grant applications, and
events licenses etc., Treasurer Angus for keeping track of our finances, and VP Marie Norman for
taking care of the weekly darts, to all the ladies that have taken turns in running the weekly card
games, to all members who have assisted in any way with the setting up for the Community
Kitchen program, games night and potluck dinners and our clean ups, it is your participation and
dedication that keeps improving every aspect of our club.
The following provides a brief overview of the events of the past year;
This Cub has representation on the Burin Peninsula Community Advisory Committee, and Suicide
Prevention Committee, which keeps members informed on the important issues/matters in the
health care field which is so relevant to us all especially seniors. Recently the Club, with the
support of the Heart & Stroke Foundation, have installed, an Automatic External Defibrillator as
well twelve members have been trained to use it. The Club has hosted, an Improving Health MyWay Initiative, which is a six-week, three hours per week program teaching about self-managing
chronic disease; just recently eighteen individuals received their certificates for the completion of
the program.
This year the Club received funding from the Community Healthy Living Fund, resulting invarious activities and events for our Club including:
Healthy Eating for Seniors:Community Kitchens (with a professional chef assisting in preparing non-traditional
cooking of non-traditional meals)
Regional Nutritionists, provided a presentation on portion control and food labeling for
seniors
Physical Fitness:o Daily physical fitness programo Twelve members registered at the Y for fourteen sessions,
o Instructional time with a fitness professional, introduction in Strength trainingo Membership in Recreation NLo The Kick Off Event - This has led to Games Night - which involves members
participating in various games, a night thoroughly enjoyed by all those who
participate.
Basic Support:
o Equipment and rent support for the Club
Other activities/events of the Club include:o Weekly Card Games, Darts, & General Monthly Meetings
o Twice this year we have held a cleanup and inventory update.o We have reviewed and revised the By-laws of the Club
o The Club continues to complete its documentation for Lottery Licenses, andincorporation as well this year the Club has obtained a business number.
o We had six members represent the Club at the NL 50+ Federation Annual
Convention in September in Marystown
o The consultation with the Dioceses to reach a rental agreement is ongoing.
It is the dedication, hard work and participation of its membership that creates success for the club.
As members we have to be cognizant of the sensitivity of members, when sensitive issues are being
discussed and decisions have to be made we realize that voting by a secret ballot is appropriate
instead of a show of hands, which some members may find intimidating depending on the issue. The Placentia West 50+ Club Inc. is successful and has a full slate of activities and events that
enables the Club to continue to meet its mandate. This Club is user friendly, open to new ideas,
and very caring of its members, on various occasions the general public is invited in to participate
in activities and events.
In closing a note of appreciation goes out to Mr. Robert Rogers, President of NL 50+ Federation
and to Mrs. Jean Philpott, Area 3 Director for their guidance throughout the past year. Thank youto Government of NL for their funding programs that enables Clubs like this one to meet its
mandate.
Going forward into another year the Club requires its full membership to continue to volunteer
their time to assist with the planning and execution of the events and activities. Your support over
this past year has been outstanding. Your support has not gone unnoticed; it is greatly appreciated
by those in the leadership roles.

Report for 2018It is with tremendous pleasure to report that the year 2018 has been an exceptional year for our 50
Plus group.
We try to conduct our meetings monthly unless something comes up to change it. We always serve
tea, coffee, cookies and muffins at the meeting. Often we have a game of cards afterwards.
Our meetings are conducted in a room provided by the Whitboume Elementary School. It is a
lovely room, members work together to keep it clean, tidy and the sidewalk shoveled and salted
during winter months.
We would love to be able to have a place that would be ours and to store all our equipment.
Hopefully in the near future this will happen.
Our group has weekly card games, bowling and Rock Curling in the gym. We are in the process
of obtaining dart boards and counters. Many members are very interested in darts. We bowl on
Mondays and meet at Tim's for coffee afterwards. Some of the members have expressed an interest
in crafts and showing younger children some of our skills. We helped the Grade 1 children to plant
pumpkins last spring and also had them over to the Community Garden to show them what we
were growing and also to see how big their pumpkins were growing. We have 16-18 vegetable
beds planted in our Community Garden, this was started in early May. Residents were very
interested and shared their harvest with others in the area. It was a fun and wonderful experience.
This year we are hoping to build an additional 8 raised beds for those who can't bend over and
also a storage shed.
We contribute to the Whitboume Elementary School breakfast program and support the kids in the
community, as well.
In early December the 50 Plus group got together at the St. John the Baptist Social Center to
prepare and deliver 80 fruit baskets to residents of our communities of Whiboume/Markland. They
were so thankful for this. Residents were so happy just to see a new face and have a visitor pop in.
Residents age 80 and up, also anyone sick or shut in receives the fruit baskets.
Every 2nd month we have a social at the Lion's Club. We have a pot luck dinner and a dance
afterwards. The music is player by a local member. There are lots of prizes won and tickets sold
on various items. Everyone has a good time with good friends, lots of food and music. We also
welcome anyone who would like to come out and have fun. Open to all.
We send out get well and sympathy cards to members of the community and also bring pop or
cookies to the funeral home.
Every 2nd Monday we have a team of 18 - 20 members that go bowling. This is a great time and
members have enjoyed their trips there and a Tim's after.
Last August we went on a day trip to The Rooms in St. John's.
We have applied for another grant for our community garden and social events and we are looking
forward to a fun and interesting 2019.
Thank you to all of our members who help to make our 50 Plus organization a success.

This province-wide initiative aims to reduce the use of potentially inappropriate medications, targeting heartburnmedications (proton pump inhibitors) in 2019, sleeping pills in 2020 and opioid painkillers in 2021.Dr Justin Turner, Scientific Director, and Kelda Newport, project coordinator, will be leading thisinitiative. Medications are essential in treating disease, relieving symptoms and prolonging life.
But sometimes, medications are continued when they are no longer useful or when they are causing

activities.
Our meetings are held on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month. Each meeting opens
with a prayer and our club song and closes with prayer. Our meetings are held in our seniors'

After opening prayer and song all regular business is conducted followed by joke telling by our

and their supporters in a number of communities across the Province. The general
purpose of these meetings will be to provide awareness of the issues that affectsocial security, financial well-being, health, wellness, and other social services and

identified.
The meeting schedule is below. You will notice that there are two different sets ofmeetings, the first being a series of local gatherings that will solicit your input tothe issues that seem to be overarching for older persons in this province and to give

influence the questions that will eventually get posed to the politicians.
The second set of meetings will be held in larger centers, with presentations by apanel of election "hopefuls" who are seeking your support on election day, whether
that is federally or provincially, and who will be asked a series of directedquestions on topics that are important to us all. Your input in the first round of
meetings will influence the questions that will eventually be used in the secondround.
Please note that these dates could possibly change slightly, depending on weatheror other factors beyond our control. Please listen to local radio advisements,
Facebook, and email communications for more meeting details. As of right now,
however, this schedule is getting close to being final. The key presenters will beShan-on Callahan, President, and Ralph Morris, Vice-President, of the NLPSPA.
