Chancellor’s Study Abroad Scholarship: Spring 2014The  Chancellor  has  dedicated  $25,000   to  fund  study   abroad   this  spring!   The  idea  is  for   this  fund   to  support   as  many   students  as  possible  for   study   abroad   and   increase   diversity  among  study  abroad  participation.

Ten   or  more  scholarships  of   $2,000   to  $2,500  w i l l   b e   awa rded   t o   s t uden t s   f r om  underrepresented   groups   who   describe   in  their  scholarship   applications  a  clear  plan  for  how,   after   returning   from   their   international  experience,   they   will   reach   out   to   other  students  who  are  less   likely   to  study   abroad,  and  help   support   goals  to   increase  the  racial/ethnic,   gender,   and   academic   diversity   of  study  abroad  participants.  Preference  is  given  to  students  with  high  financial  need,   to  first-‐‑generation  college  students,  and  to  those  who  have   limited   or   no   previous   experience  abroad.  Award   recipients  will   be  required   to  report   to   the   Chancellor   about   their  international   experience,  make  presentations  in   multiple   seYings,   and   be   willing   to  participate  in  videotaped  interviews.

Lindsey  Brantley  is  a  2010  NC  State  graduate  in  Biology   and   was   a   Peace   Corps   volunteer   in  Peru  from  2011-‐‑2013.    As  the  NC  State  Campus  Recruiter,  she  works  with  students  and  non-‐‑NC  State  individuals  interested  in  joining   the  Peace  Corps.    I  sat  down  with  Lindsey  to  talk  about  her  experience  and  to  learn  more  about   the   services  offered   on   campus   for   people   interested   in  making  a  difference  around  the  world.

What   are   the  main  benefits   of   joining  the  Peace  Corps?A   beYer   cultural   awareness.   I   never   would  have  known   that   people  still   live  like  that.    We   cooked   with   rocks   on   the   floor   with  firewood  inside  our  house.  It  was  incredibly  eye-‐‑opening   just   to   have   that   experience  and  to  be  able  to  live  like  that,  not  just  for  a  week,  but  for  two  years.    There  are  very  few  people  who  can  go  somewhere  and  live  in  a  place   where   you   have   to   break   cultural  boundaries.   The   work   we   do   may   seem  really  basic,  but  it’s...  Read  More.
