All activities are run at a beginners’ level so it doesn’t matter if

you haven’t tried the activity before. There’s no strings attached,

Stunt Cheerleading

Outdoor Climbing

Stunt Cheerleading is a great opportunity to come and try something totally new and different! It incorporates a range of dance, jumps, tumbles and stunts into a routine and we have six skilled coaches who are ready to teach you all of these skills. No experience is necessary - most of the squad have absolutely no previous cheerleading experience when they joined. All we ask for is enthusiasm and a willingness to try. *Stunt cheerleading isn’t just exclusive to girls; we have a few boys on the team already and we are always looking for more!*

Monday 20th April, 7-9pm, meet on the concourse at 6:50pm or Brookhill Hall at 7pm, £3. Wear gym-wear, trainers and a come with a positive, cheery attitude!

Join the Mountaineering Club at Lawrence Quarry and receive a four hour introduction into climbing outside in the peak district. This is a fantastic opportunity to experience the sport Sheffield is world famous for alongside some of the clubs most experienced climbers.

Wednesday 6th May, meet under the concourse at 1pm, £7. Please come along appropriately dressed for the weather, tracksuits and trainers are ideal. Please bring an extra warm layer and waterproofs if it is raining. Additionally you will need £6 for the bus fare to and from the Peak District.

Mixed Self Defence Class

Our self-defence class will give a solid introduction to the concepts of self-defence including: psychology, situational awareness, avoiding confrontation, diffusing confrontation and the actual physical act of defending yourself. You will learn basic blocking techniques, defences to common grabs and strangles, how to effectively strike your opponents as well as vulnerable points to attack when in trouble. To supplement this, some basic combat anatomy will be discussed, enabling you to learn locks and pins to overpower people much stronger than yourself.

Varsity Coaches: Ice Hockey Final Buy your coach tickets for the Varsity Final: Ice Hockey, at the Sheffield Arena on Wednesday 22nd April. Coach tickets are £6 general and £1 for Residence Life members. Coaches are departing from Ranmoor Student Village and Endcliffe Student Village at 6pm. Please note this is transport only and does not include the price of the Ice Hockey ticket. You must purchase the Ice Hockey ticket separately. Coaches depart the Arena at 9pm.

Needle Book

Moroccan Candle Holder Decorating

Come along to Stitch Soc to make your very own needle book! They’re a great way to store your needles and look very cute too! We have a variety of designs for you to choose from. All levels of experience welcome. All materials provided.

Thursday 30th April, 5.30 – 7.30pm, Activities and Sports Zone, £4

Make your own Moroccan glass candle holder. Ran by the Art Society, this is a great chance to get crafty and meet some new people. Ticket price includes use of all the supplies.

Fashion Societies End of Year Workshop

This will be Fashion Societies last workshop of the year! You will be provided with a white t-shirt and all of the materials to do some really cool tie dye. Also provided are materials to do other customizing such as studding, so make sure that you bring some clothes to work on. There will be some surprises on the day and cakes and refreshments will be provided! With a limited number of tickets, buy now so you don’t miss out!

Dream Catcher Making

Dream catchers originated in Native American culture and are believed to filter a person’s dreams, allowing only the good dreams to enter. In this session you’ll get the chance to make and keep your own homemade dream catcher from scratch. All materials provided.

Swedish Back Massage

Lishi Tai Chi

Massage has been practiced in varying forms for centuries by the Eastern Asians and has long established histories. This two hour workshop will introduce you to a simple form of Swedish massage. You’ll learn techniques that will leave you totally relaxed and with a new-found talent for de-stressing family and friends. Why not use the techniques learnt to relax ahead of exams?

Monday 11th May, 5-7pm, Octagon Council Chambers, £3.50. Involves pair work. Please bring a bath towel

Join Lishi Tai Chi Society for this short exercise session to introduce Lishi Tai Chi. Lishi is a fun exercise system that is both slow and fast. Slow Tai Chi, yoga and breathing helps you to relax, feel good and be more connected to your own body. The faster movements in Lishi help you to be agile, dynamic and are excellent for improving fitness. The session is taught by an experienced teacher, with an easy to follow approach. People of all abilities and fitness levels are welcome.

Relaxation Astrology

We all have moments when life gets on top of us, we all struggle with the pace of life and the pressures of work and other people around us, but one thing we should be able to do is relax, fully relax. Here in this session you get the chance to let everything go, to find a relaxing position that can be used whenever and wherever you need it. Practical solutions to the stresses of modern life, a toolkit to use and share throughout life. Why not use the techniques learnt to relax ahead of exams?

Wednesday 20th May, 7-9pm, Gallery Room 3, £3.50

Come and find out if you're a fiery Leo or a moon drenched Cancer, learn about the influences of planets and what the star signs really are and what they mean to you and your friends. Could you get on better with Virgo housemates next year or would you prefer the easy going Sagittarius? Come and find out where your stars lay and what they mean to you. Please bring pen, paper and an open mind.

Tarot Card Reading and Divination

Learn what tarot card reading and divination are really all about in this workshop: dispel the myths, discover different types of cards and what tarot can be used for. Learn how to interpret the cards and gain an insight into the possible future. Many believe the tarot cards are guided by a spiritual force, so come along to this session and find out for yourself. By the end of the evening you will be able to perform your own basic readings. Please bring an open mind.

Street Jazz

Beginners Tap

CapoeiraBollywood Dance: Partner and Group

Zumba & Toning

Street Jazz is an energetic class based on a commercial street jazz style of dancing. The class is suitable for all abilities and will include a basic warm up as well as learning part of a routine.

Tuesdays: 14th, 21st and 28th of April, 8-9pm, Studio, £3.50

Beginners Tap is a really fun introduction to the style of tap dancing. Learn the basic steps and build up to a basic routine. No tap shoes or previous experience needed, just come along and have fun!

Fridays: 17th and 24th of April or 1st May, 5-6pm, Uni Central, £3.50

Capoeira is an exciting sport that combines martial arts, dance, acrobatics and music. A Brazilian art with African roots, capoeira will improve your: strength; balance; and flexibility, and is a fun way of getting fit. From kicks to cartwheels, singing to spinning, there’s something for everyone! This session is run by the University Capoeira Society and the ticket price includes the Give it a Go session and another class for free! Looking to start something new and exciting at University? Capoeira is for you!

Saturday 18th and 25th April, 3-5pm, meet in Goodwin Sports Centre, room: Activity Room 1, £4. Please bring a bottle of water and wear gym-wear.

Bollywood Dance is a mix of Indian classical/traditional dance with influence of western dance forms like jazz and hip hop. This interesting dance form is unique and has its own flavour and merit, mostly spotted in Bollywood movies, Desi weddings, Clubs and more! Part of Bollywood dancing also involves matching your moves to the lyrics of the music. No experience needed, everyone is welcome!

Friday 24th April, 6-8pm, Studio, £3.

Ditch the workout and join the party! Zumba is an enjoyable workout, so whether you're sick of the gym or just looking to try something new, then give Zumba a go! No skill is required; all abilities welcome, just follow the instructor. Zumba will take place for the first half of the session.

Toning class is like Zumba except more care is taken as small weights are involved. This easy exercise tones muscles all over your body and this continues on from Zumba from 6.45pm-7.30pm, same place same people. Hope to see you there!

Meet the Bees

Feather Balancing Workshop

Balloon Modelling Workshop

The Beekeeping society invites you to come and meet their bees! On the day, you will learn how to check the bees’ health and find the queen. It’s a great to see how a hive works and learn a bit more about bee keeping and bees. There will be an opportunity to buy society membership with a jar of honey on the day.

Fancy learning a new skill that you can do to relax? Why not try peacock feather balancing? The strangest things the University can offer are always the most fun, and I bet you never thought of trying this out! No experience required. All materials provided plus free tea and biscuits!

The teapots return with another fantastic balloon modelling workshop! After receiving great feedback on their previous ones they have decided to run another! Come learn how to make dogs, swords, worms, monkeys, t-shirts, hats and so much more! No experience required. All materials provided plus free tea and biscuits!

Monday 13th April, 7:45-10pm, meet by the Welcome Desk, £1

Come along and get a free pack of grow your own herbs (suitable for indoor growing on a windowsill, perfect if you don't have garden space!). Pick up some seeds, compost , pots, and learn what to do with them to ensure you get a lovely tasty herb in a month's time! Ghost TourWhirlow Hall Farm - Lambing

Have you ever wondered what spooky secrets lurk in Victorian Sheffield? Take this guided tour around the dark heart of the steel city to discover the ghosts and ghouls of the past! You’ll be amazed at the secrets that the industrial city of Sheffield holds… from scandals and murders to some very bizarre occurrences! Wear warm clothing and bring an umbrella if necessary.

Tuesday 21st April, 7.30 – 9.30pm, meet on the Town Hall Steps in the City Centre, £4.50.

Experience the beauty of the natural world this spring! See new-born lambs frolicking around the barn and on the fields at Whirlow Hall Farm, just 3 miles from the University up Ecclesall Road. Come along and meet our cows and calves, pigs and piglets, duck, rabbits, turkeys, goats, guinea pigs, ponies, hens and chicks. Spend two hours on the farm and have a guided tour behind the scenes. Plenty of animals to see and stroke; come along and join in the farmyard fun! Farm shop and café available too!

Wednesday 22nd April, 2-4.30pm, meet at the Glossop Road entrance to Bar One, £10. Please bring money for the bus fare.

Barista Training with Coffee Revolution

Come and experience life on the other side of the coffee counter. Barista Training is an opportunity to find out how your favourite coffee is made. Not only will you learn more about coffee and what separates a wet latte from a dry cappuccino, but you will also get a chance to don the apron, pour the espresso, steam the milk, and craft your very own artisan coffee in the company of our best Baristas.

Tickets are £6 and all sessions will be held in Coffee Revolution in the Students’ Union. The session will last between 1.5 and 2 hours depending on group size.

Coffee Morning with MSC

Historical Crime and Murder Tour

It’s a Sunday, so kick back, relax and enjoy a morning with MSC in association with STAR (Student Action for Refugee’s) and their adopted charities – Assist and Roundabout! Featuring words and music from asylum seekers and representatives of their charities, their coffee morning is ideal for all ages so bring along your family as they have prepared games and Lego blocks to keep them occupied. Sunday Mornings will never be the same again!

Sunday 26th April, 11am-12:30pm, meet in Coffee Revolution in the Students’ Union, £5.95. Ticket price includes a Sunday Morning Newspaper, a regular coffee and a croissant.

Would you like to know what lies beneath the ground you walk on? Could you listen to the truth about the Victorian city you live in? Then come and listen to the true tales of the Sheffield criminals on the Crime and Murder Tour. Learn about the hardships and deeds that took place in the back alleys and courtyards of Sheffield, the murders, riots, prostitution, petty thefts and racketeerings. Wear warm clothing and bring an umbrella if necessary.

Film Unit Presents: Eurovision 2015

For Eurovision’s 60th Anniversary, Film Unit and The Five & Dime Picture Show bring you a unique experience. Watch the live final on our huge cinema screen, expect guest hosts, flags and face paint, fancy dress competitions, audience voting and much more! Website Coding and WordPress

Come along to a basic introduction to the commonly used website, WordPress. In this lesson you will be taught how to code a website, including how to write your own code for images and videos. This is a great session for societies wanting to build their own website, and anyone who has an interest in website coding.

Introduction to Events Management Course

Weekend Intensive German

TEFL: Teaching English as a Foreign Language

This course is your introduction to the basics of planning and organising an event. You will learn the key aspects of Event Management, and gain skills in how to achieve your objectives in the best ways possible, whether you event is big or small. The three session will include; events management, marketing and social media. A completion certificate will be awarded for full attendance.

Tuesdays: 23rd April, 30th April and 7th May, 5-7pm, Arts Tower, LT08, £15.

Our weekend intensive German course is aimed at students who have no knowledge of the German language but wish to learn the basics of reading, writing, listening and speaking. German is now one of the most popular languages spoken across Europe, so this course is perfect if you’re planning to travel study or work in Europe. You’ll be able to order a bratwurst in no time!

Saturday 25th & Sunday 26th April, 10am - 4pm, Monsal Dale in Ranmoor, £20

You’ll look at teaching resources, gain a basic understanding of how some lesson types are staged, and explore some online TEFL resources and jobs sites. This is a very useful introduction if you are thinking of travelling, teaching, or want to do a full TEFL course in future. Participants can get a £50 discount on a full Cambridge CELTA TEFL Certification course. An attendance certificate will be given.

Oxford

Known as the city of ‘dreaming spires,’ Oxford is steeped in rich and fascinating history. Home to the world famous Oxford University, its 38 separate colleges are spread across the city centre ranging from 50 to over 600 years old! There are many fascinating Oxford tourism hotspots for you to enjoy such as museums, many of which are free – so take advantage of everything Oxford has to offer. If the sun is out, then why not go punting or take a relaxing river cruise? Climb to the top of one of Oxford’s towers and witness the breath-taking views for yourself.

Chatsworth House

Bakewell Food Festival

Chatsworth House is a truly breathtaking traditional English stately residence, home to the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire. The house has 30 rooms full of Europe's finest private collection of treasures. You can also stroll around the beautiful garden which includes a maze, five miles of walks, rare plants, fountains, ponds and the famous Duke's Cascade. Plus, on the way home we will stop at the Chatsworth 'farm shop' for you to stock up on local goodies!

Sunday 19th April, 10am – 5pm, meet at the Glossop Road entrance to Bar One, £24. Ticket includes travel and entry to the house and gardens. The coach will depart Chatsworth at 4pm for a stop at the Farm Shop before heading back to Sheffield at 5pm. Travel time is approx. 45 minutes. www.chatsworth.org

This small market town in the Derbyshire Dales, well known for the Bakewell Pudding (or is it a Bakewell tart?!), is holding its annual food festival celebrating the wealth of excellent local produce the Peak District has to offer. As well as a multi-award winning farmers market at the Agricultural Business Centre, the historic streets will host more than their usual splendid offerings of food fayre to tempt your plate! For all you food lovers, this is a trip not to be missed!

Sunday 26th April, 9:30am – 4pm, meet at the Glossop Road entrance to Bar One, £10. The coach departs the Festival at 4pm. Travel time is approx. 45 minutes.

Liverpool

Famous for being the birthplace of The Beatles and home to Liverpool FC and Everton FC, Liverpool has a wealth of attractions for you to explore! The Albert Dock complex is its pride and joy; these restored warehouses are now home to a collection of cafes, shops and attractions – including the Beatles Story museum, the Tate Liverpool Gallery, the International Slavery Museum and the World Museum Liverpool. Back in the city centre; look out for more Beatles landmarks like the Cavern Club and a variety of other galleries and museums. Or else just shop till you drop in the new and impressive Liverpool ONE and the city centre.

S Alnwick Castle – Downton Abbey Special

Alnwick Castle is one of the largest inhabited castles in England and is situated between Newcastle and Edinburgh. It is steeped in history and has been used as a setting in many television series and films including Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and the Chamber of Secrets, and was used in filming for the Downton Abbey Christmas special. Alnwick boasts sumptuous state rooms, filled with remarkable art and furniture, including one of the country’s finest private art collections. Today we will get a private tour to see rooms used in the Downton Abbey 2014 Christmas special episode. We will hear behind-the-scenes details of filming, and learn how a real stately household would operate.

Tropical Butterfly House,Wildlife and Falconry Centre

It’s not all butterflies! This lovely local Wildlife Centre houses amazing wildlife from across the globe. You’ll be able to visit the butterfly house, Meerkat Mansion, small animal house, farm barn and prairie dog camp, as well as seeing lots of birds of prey and parrots. There are plenty of talks and displays throughout the day for you to enjoy. Harrogate is a beautiful spa town in North Yorkshire. In the 18th century, the town became known as “The English Spa”, after the waters were discovered to contain healing properties. We are off to the magical world of Harry Potter again. This magical journey will amaze you as we visit where all eight of the Harry Potter films were made. Sheffield Volunteering has projects right across Sheffield. From activities right on your doorstep to exploring the wild and wonderful Peak District, you can experience amazing things by volunteering.

Our Give it a Go volunteering days are the best way to give volunteering a try. Each activity is designed as a taster day, enabling you to try something new and gain new skills. They are perfect with friends and a great way to meet like-minded people.

The children at Gleadless Primary School are looking for some help to brighten up their playground and this is your chance to help. Volunteers will tap into their inner-artist and help paint the foundation playground beautiful colours.

Be totally off-grid. Eckington park is a beautiful 25 acre site for growing local food and demonstrating sustainable living. Help with building a solar power array, composting toilets, biomass heating and rainwater harvesting from materials on the site. This is physical outdoor work so just bring some good boots and they’ll supply gloves and tools.

Theatre Delicatessen are a new community project running theatre and arts projects in the old Woolworths building. Theatre Deli are looking for some keen volunteers to help usher at one of their upcoming events. As people arrive, you will take tickets, show people their seats and then you get to watch the show. Action Housing are currently renovating a property that requires a team of people to help rejuvenate the garden to make it enjoyable for the people that will live there.

together children from four local primary schools for a day of trying new sports. Volunteers are needed to accompany the children between activities. No experience necessary but volunteers must be willing to join in and have fun.

Spend the day with Sheffield RSPCA looking after cats and dogs. You’ll spend half the day helping to clean the site for animals in need. The other half of the day will be spent walking, grooming and socialising with the cats and dogs. This opportunity is ideal for any animal enthusiast who wants to help animals in need of care.

Wednesday 20th May, 8:40am - 4:20pm

Holy Hagg is a community wildlife and food growing project in S10. They use organic and permaculture design in a way that is sustainable and in harmony with nature. You are invited to spend a day caring for the plants, weeding and planting some seeds. There will also be a chance to hand feed the lovely alpacas on the farm.

Take part in a football tournament for refugees and asylum seekers and students. Volunteers can help with the organisation of the day or just turn up and play. No skill or experience needed.

Set in Sheffield's old Woolworths building, this community project has transformed this tired space into a performance space. Theatre Delicatessen need help preparing for their upcoming shows and their ongoing art exhibitions with prop making and stage decorating. No experience necessary, just a bit of creativity and a willingness to pick up a paintbrush. There is loads to get ready so it’s all hands on deck until the curtain falls!

Sheffield Students’ Union’s Give it a Go programme is packed full of activities, events and experiences. Every year thousands of students take part in Give it a Go, and you should too!

BUYING TICKETSTickets for all activities are on sale at the Students’ Union Box Office and are available to buy online www.sheffieldsu.com/events

Tickets MUST be purchased in ADVANCE and uCards must be shown at the Box Office. You can’t turn up and pay on the door. Demand for Give it a Go is massive and events can sell out very quickly… please buy your ticket early to avoid disappointment! Unfortunately, all tickets purchased are non-refundable and cannot be exchanged or transferred. If the event organiser cancels the activity, a full refund will be given from the Students’ Union Box Office. Participants will be informed of cancellations via facebook and twitter, and email where possible.

CHILD-FRIENDLY TICKETSThe child friendly logo beside selected day trips allows student parents the opportunity to take their children on that trip. Just ask at the Box Office for a child friendly ticket and get £2 off the full priced ticket.

WOMEN’S MINIBUSFor evening activities in the Students’ Union, the Women’s Minibus will take you home to your door anywhere within a 2-mile radius of the Union. The service runs at half past every hour and tickets cost just £1.50 from the Students’ Union Box Office.
