Give it a Go (GIAG) is a great way to try out fun activities in and around Newcastle! This booklet shows you all the activities planned for this first term, and should keep you fairly busy until Christmas! All sessions are open to ALL students, so you do not have to be a member of anything to get involved! Go on! Give it a Go!

Indian Head Massage Friday 30th September, 12-5pm (20 minute sessions), FREE

Freshers Week proved a little too much for your weary head? Returning to Uni and the looming reading, essays and deadlines scaring you?! Relax with a FREE 20 minute Indian Head Massage courtesy of NUSU and Give it a Go. You will be massaged by a trained and qualified professional and no oils will be used, so take some time to enjoy and relax…

Wet n’ Wild

Friday 30th September, 1pm, FREE

Come and get soaked at the UK’s biggest and best waterpark! With some of the biggest and scariest water flumes in the country, come and have an exhilarating afternoon screaming your head off, followed by a relaxation in the lazy river…

Zumba

Friday 30th September, 3pm, FREE

The Brazilian dance craze that’s sweeping the nation! A fun and funky way to keep fit, Zumba’s Brazilian beats will have you shaking your ass like a crazy thing…

Building Tours

Saturday 1st October, from 9.30am, FREE

Come and get a guided tour from one of your knowledgeable officers on your shiny new Students’ Union building! It’s your Union, so learn how to get the most out of it! The tours start every 30 minutes from 9.30am, leaving from reception.

Circus Skills

Saturday 1st October, all day, FREE

Ever wanted to run away with the Circus? You might wanna learn a few basics to hide you well…come and learn how to juggle, poi dance, unicycle and more!

Bike Polo

Saturday 1st October, 1.30pm, FREE

Ever wanted to learn Polo but daddy couldn’t stretch to a horse?! Come and join in bike polo! Ran by the University’s polo club, this fun session takes place in West Jesmond park.

Surfing

Saturday 1st October, 1pm, £7

Fancy learning how to surf? With some of the best waves in the country, Tynemouth offers a great opportunity. Price includes all surfing gear and instruction (normally £30 each!) so grab this opportunity to catch some gnarly waves, dude…

Self Defence

Saturday 1st October, 3pm, FREE

Now, we’re not suggesting in such a lovely city as Newcastle you’d ever need this, but a basic knowledge of some self defence tactics is always a good idea. Come and arm yourself with some basic moves to keep yourself safe…

Scuba Diving

Sunday 2nd October, 12pm, £5

That’s right Scuba Diving. Join in with the Sub Aqua Club to learn the basics of driving and snorkelling in the City Pool. Price includes everything you need, just bring your swimming gear!

Castle Keep

Wednesday 5th October, 1pm, FREE

Come and visit the Castle that gave the city it’s name. This is a guided tour of the part ruined castle, that’s completely fascinating and rewarded with amazing views on the roof (with turrets!). A cultural must see.

SCAN – Rupert’s Wood Bushcraft

Friday 7th October, 10am-4pm, FREE

SCAN have access to our own woodland in Otterburn, Northumberland. We will be heading up there for the day to learn a range of bushcraft activities, a little conservation work and to just explore and enjoy the wood.Transport, equipment and food are all provided for free, you just need to bring enthusiasm ......... and suitable footwear.

Snowtubing

Wednesday 12th October, 1pm, £4

Similar to sledging, but faster, come and fly down a dry skip slope on a wet rubber dinghy. Sounds like a hell of a fun afternoon to me. Price includes transportation, all equipment and instruction.

Fellwalking – The Lake District

Sunday 23rd October, 8am-6pm, £3

Come and visit the beautiful Lake District with the Fellwalking Society! Students need to have ankle support boots, waterproof top (and preferably waterproof trousers, we can provide a few pairs from the store), a packed lunch and other warm clothing. We’ll be running a range of walks, from wee ones to a large round of the Coniston fells. This price includes transportation, some equipment and all instruction. Massage Sessions

Come and enjoy a completely FREE massage-take your pick from reflexology, indian head or all over (clothed) massage to ease your mid term aches and pains…

SCAN Guerilla Gardening

Thursday 3rd November, 1pm – 4pm, FREE

The SCAN Guerrilla gardening group meet on a regular basis, doing environmental activities throughout the city centre. We have transformed many run down areas and are committed to the ongoing redevelopment of Exhibition, Brandling and Leazes Park. These activities are great for dipping in and out of, particularly for those of you with green fingers who like the outdoors! As always Transport and equipment are provided.

Rifle Target Shooting

Saturday 5th November, 1pm – 4pm, £3

This is your opportunity to learn how to shoot, get some target practice and learn how to aim a gun correctly. To take part in this, we need plenty of notice as you must be background checked, so the closing date for taking part is FRIDAY 21ST OCTOBER. This price includes transportation, instruction and all equipment.

Karate

Wednesday 9th November, 6.30-8.30, FREE

Come and learn some basic Karate moves! No previous experience required and even if you’ve done karate before we welcome all styles and associations. Just come in comfortable clothing (eg. no jeans) and be prepared to take your shoes and socks off. We advise you to bring a bottled drink as well. We will be going to the North Terrace pub afterwards and would welcome you to join us!

SCAN Rupert’s Woods Arts & Crafts

Saturday 12th November, 10am-4.30pm, FREE SCAN have access to our own woodland in Otterburn, Northumberland. We will be heading up there for the day to learn about the wood and to do some arts and crafts activities using the natural resources that the woodland provides. Transport, equipment and food are all provided for free, and you don’t have to be a skilled artist, just come and have some fun!

Last year the challenges included a Treasure Hunt, a Pub Quiz and a Murder Mystery night, and saw prizes including iPods, cash and vouchers for meals in the city! This year’s programme is still strictly under wraps, but look out for more information or email [email protected] to ask any questions…

Quayside Ghost Walk

Monday 31st October, 4pm, FREE

It’s Halloween so come and hear some grisly tales of Newcastle and scare yourself silly! Learn stories of ghosts, witches, bodies fished from the river and murders on both sides of the Tyne, so learn some horrible history of your University city!

Newburn Park Tree Planting

Wednesday 7th December, 1pm –4.30pm, FREE

SCAN regularly visit the park to team up with the Rangers Ken and Gillian to do whatever environmental tasks they need doing. In the past tasks have included tree planting, fence repair, pond clearing, working in the sensory garden. We even have our own little patch of land which we are responsible for which we call the ‘Scantation’. This is a great chance to get out into the middle of nowhere for a few hours, enjoy the peace and quiet, meet other students and to get your hands dirty.Transport and Equipment provided.

Our very own nationally renowned modern art gallery has been selected to host the prestigious Turner Prize nominees, so why not come and check out the pinnacle of the

modern art world and pass your judgement?

York Christmas Markets

Saturday 26th November, 9am, £5

Come to explore one of the most beautiful cities in the UK when the famous Christmas markets are in town! Buy some trinkets for loved ones or just stuff your face full of lovely festive treats and eats! Your £5 is for your transport to and from York, and the day is yours to explore this historic city.

Orienteering

Wednesday 30th November, 1pm, £4

Come and challenge yourself in this fun thought sport, which involves map orientation, to navigate your way round the course in the quickest time. This is a fun day out, and your £4 includes transport and the afternoon’s orienteering.

Archery

Wednesday 2nd November, 1pm, £4

Fancy yourself as a bit of a Robin Hood figure? Want to learn a cool olde English skill? Come and join in this fun archery session with full instruction- no need to have ever done this before! Price includes transport, instruction and all equipment.

Come and join this 2 hour long, 3 week training course to teach you basic massage skills for you to apply to yourself or people around you!
