A Note from the Publishers

My Momma always said life was like a box of chocolates...wait a second, no, that wasn’t my

mother that was Forest Gumps’ momma. Oh well, the idea holds true no matter whose mother said it. Life really is like a box of chocolates sometimes. You pull this beautiful piece of chocolate out of the box and you take a bite expecting to get a scrumptous taste of caramel and you end up with a taste of gooy mint. At first, you want to spit it back out, afterall you’ve done everything you can to avoid this particular morsel because the mere thought of mint makes your stomach queezy. But, with every chew the taste gets better and better and eventually you end up thinking, “That wasn’t so bad, why did avoid that for so long.”

In life, we tend to try to avoid the things that make us uneasy. However, it’s doing and facing the things that make us uneasy that faciltates the most growth. It allows us to really test our strength and our capabilities and gives a sense of accomplishment for doing that which we thought we could not.

In this issue of GIRL STIR you’ll read about exercising, eating right to cure disease, and some political stuff, all things that will bend your mind a bit. I won’t lie, there are even some things that will make you a bit uneasy. However, it is our hope that in reaching beyond your comfort zone and challenging that which you thought you knew, you’ll find growth and perhaps most importantly, a different perspective. See you next issue, same time, same sandbox.

Ever wish you could eat and drink your way around

the world?

Well, here’s your chance---no passport required!

The Boca Raton Wine and Food Festival is taking place on 11.11.11 and 11.12.11 in downtown Boca. Spanning three quarters of a mile down Camino Real from Federal Highway to the Boca Raton Resort and Club, this tri-county event will take you on a culinary journey through seven international regions featuring South Florida’s most lauded chefs.

Savor signature dishes while sipping fabulous world class wines and enjoying region specific decor and music. Then once you’ve globe trotted your way through the likes of Italy, France, Spain, South America, Asia Pacific and more, you end up in heaven..well okay, Sweet Endings, a dessert laden village. Ahh, is this a dream trip or what?

Now just in case your thinking this bash will put a kabosh your diet, you can shake it all off at the concert at the end of the celebration!

“There is so much great buzz about this event,” says Festival co- founder Russell Spadaccini. “Anticipation is building as we have created a truly

between the guests and their region’s chef,” explains Spadaccini. “We are going to make this a truly memorable experience.”

On 11.12.11, the enormous team that Spadaccini and Stanfield have ensembled will transform Camino Real for the Grand Tasting. As guests travel from region to region visiting 70 chefs, they will be entertained and enthralled not only by the amazing foods to taste and wines to imbibe, but also by the sights and sounds of each location.

In addition, attendees will enjoy gourmet gift shopping, a business bazaar, cooking demonstrations and so much more.

outstanding two-day gastronomic adventure.”

Last year, Spadaccini and co-founder Robert Stanfield inaugurated the event to an array of community kudos. Not known to rest on their laurels, they decided that this year’s event should be even more incredible!

“We chose to expand the event to two days,” explains Stanfield. “We wanted to create two different experiences. Friday night will be an exclusive VIP dinner-under-the stars and Saturday will be the traditional Grand Tasting.”

For the 11.11.11 event, about 200 guests will select a region of their choice in which approximately 30 guests per area will savor a multi-course dinner representative of their chosen destination. After the scrumptuous meal, the guests will then be treated to a night of live entertainment and dancing.

“This is going to be a very intimate event

Russell Spadaccini, Jaime Aronson, Robert Stanfield

“One of the ways that we have really distinguished this Festival from others is our involvement with the community,” says Stanfield. “We selected thirteen local charities to partner with. Each non-profit is selling tickets for the culinary extravaganza to their supporters and is receiving a percentage of each ticket sold. They will also receive proceeds from the festival’s silent auction.”

Making things even more dramatic will be a chef’s competition called SLICED, where $5000 will be donated to one of the charities.

“Creekstone Farms, one of the world’s premiere beef companies, is underwriting this generous donation,” says Spadaccini. “The participating chefs will choose a charity, and create a signature dish using Creekstone’s premium Black Angus beef. Judges will determine the winning recipe, and the top chef will then award the grand prize to their selected charity.”

The non-profits include the Alzheimer’s Association SEFC, American Heart Association, Boca Helping Hands, Broward Children’s Center Foundation, Gift of Life Bone Marrow Foundation, Adolph & Rose Levis Jewish Community Center, PROPEL(Propelyourfuture.org), Scleroderma Foundation of

Southeast Florida, SOS Children’s Villages Florida, Surfers for Autism, the Tri-County Humane Society, The Boca Ballet Theatre, and Kids4kids.

“Being able to create a gourmet experience that serves our community in such a wonderful way truly makes the Boca Wine and Food Festival a unique and inspiring event,” says Chef Lee Blakley, the festival’s Executive chef. The globe-trotting female chef/ sommelier, who travels across the country catering to some of corporate America’s most discriminating palates, believes the Festival’s success is due to the creators’ amazing recipe.

“It’s an intricate array of ingredients, but all of the elements just blend together perfectly,” she says.

Francis, the author of two other alternative health best sellers, says that conventional medicine has been looking at cancer from the wrong perspective and as a result has been asking the wrong questions. “Conventional medicine views cancer as a tumor,” Francis says, “and they ask how can it be killed or removed. But cancer isn’t something that can be cut, poisoned or burned out of the body. It is a biological process that needs to be shut down.”

Never Fear Cancer Again, a groundbreaking book on

preventing and reversing cancer, has just been published. The author, Raymond Francis, M.Sc., says that despite the billions of dollars spent on

cancer research, the War on Cancer has been a colossal failure, with cancer rates soaring and survival rates showing no real improvement since 1950.

Page 21: GIRL STIR October

Francis says removing or killing tumors does not address the cause, and therefore the cancer will most often come back because the process is still operating.

“Cure is defined in cancer treatment as ‘alive 5 years after diagnosis.’ Do you consider that a cure? I sure don’t. Cure means the cancer doesn’t return, ever!” Harvey Diamond, coauthor of the #1 New York Times best seller Fit for Life, writes in the foreword: “While the knowledge to end this epidemic already exists, the problem is that it is not being assembled and packaged into something we can use. In this eye-opening book, that’s what Francis so eloquently succeeds in doing.”

The breakthrough idea in Never Fear Cancer Again is thinking about cancer in a new way—as a process. Once you understand this process, you can see how to turn it off, just like turning off a lamp in your living room.

“Once you learn what to do to turn off the process and keep it turned off, the cancer will not return,” Francis says. “Now that’s what I call a cure!” We are all at risk. According to the American Cancer Society almost half of all Americans will get cancer during their lifetimes. That’s up from three percent of the population in 1900.

“A lot has changed since then,” says Francis. “Junk food diets, living in a sea of manmade toxins, exposure to a profusion of electromagnetic fields, high-stress lifestyles, lack of exercise and sleep, and health-damaging medical treatments all present the human organism with unprecedented challenges.”

Francis, an M.I.T.-trained scientist, nearly died 26 years ago from medically-induced liver failure at the height of an international consulting career. He brought himself back to health using his knowledge of biochemistry and the principles he explains in his first book, Never Be Sick Again. Since then, he has been disseminating the message that health is a choice, and he has taught thousands how to choose it.

Russell Blaylock, M.D., a retired neurosurgeon and author of Natural Strategies for Cancer Patients, says, “Never Fear Cancer Again can only be described as a masterpiece.”

Ronald Greene, M.D., a pediatrician who met Francis after being sent home to die with stage 4 kidney cancer, followed Raymond’s program, restored his health and has now returned to his practice. Dr. Greene says, “Never Fear Cancer Again could save your life!”

The rIght Way To Exercise

Strenuous exercise will make you lose weight, right? This is a common misunderstanding.

Exercising can help burn fat, thus making you lighter, but it must be done in the right way. Aerobic exercise will burn fat, but not in the way you might expect. If you are practicing something like kick-boxing or running for half an hour three to four times a week, you are not burning fat with your exercise routine. Your body uses glucose to produce energy when you exercise in the aerobic zone. The aerobic zone will differ from person to person; it is achieved when your heart is working so hard to get oxygen to your muscles (also working hard) that it beats at 70 per cent or more of its maximum rate. It is because your body is working so hard that it pulls its energy from the readily available blood sugar rather than from stored fat. It is

easier for your body to get to the glucose than to the fat. You

are working hard and you are burning calories, but you are not burning fat in the aerobic zone.

Eventually, you will begin to burn fat in the aerobic zone, but this will only happen after the readily available blood sugar is gone. usually, it takes at least 20 to 30 minutes of working in the aerobic zone to burn up all your glucose energy. After that, you would have to work out another 20 to 30 minutes to burn enough stored fat to make a difference. What then is the solution? How do we lose this extra body fat? The answer is simpler than you’d expect. When you’re not doing anything strenuous your body burns fat. Walking is the most valuable and most effective exercise for healthy weight loss. Simply stated: walking burns fat. Walking also uses your own body weight to build lean muscle. Lean muscle burns fat. Walking every day, eating a balanced and nutritious diet of whole foods, and drinking water to thirst are the easy ingredients to successful weight loss.

So enjoy the benefits of a brisk walk and a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, legumes and dietary fiber.

Weightloss

“We do not stop exercising because we grow old - we grow old because we stop exercising.”

-Dr. Kenneth Cooper, Cooper Institute.

Are the fears that are holding you back real or are they figments of

your imagination? If you are brutally honest with yourself you will admit that most often the details that you worry about are created in your daydreams.

As we “worry” we begin to spin a mental yarn that escalates out of control until we manage to frighten even ourselves. As we storyboard fear, we literally can cause ourselves

to be frozen in our tracks.

Sometimes we can even witness family or friends using this tactic on themselves. A story is created and “what ifs” are added and before you know it

fear rears its head in monstrous fashion. Literally, a person can arouse fear just by thinking intensely about it. Our minds have great powers and when we use our power of visualization to

Page 31: GIRL STIR October

create what we want to avoid, we actually are allowing those negative mental pictures to come closer and closer to our reality.

When we recognize this negative tendency, can we reverse the downward spiral? Absolutely! Simply catch yourself being negative and say silently or out loud “Stop It!” Then, replace that negative thought with something good that may as easily happen. For example, a person may be fearful about an upcoming meeting or work situation. Instead of envisioning the worst that might happen, shift gears and imagine the best possible outcome and even

2011 I GIRL 31

make a game of it. When you trick yourself into thinking positively you will realize that by thinking negatively you were being the butt of your own joke. Fear causes us to act fearfully, and fearful actions usually produce fearful results.

Just for today give up a negative addiction. Catch yourself being negative in your thought process. Refuse to indulge in fear-based thoughts. Stop negative thoughts before they filter into your reality. Be faithful instead of fearful and you will see a change in not only your worldview but your world in a very short time.

gIrl garden

It’s October and hopefully by now you’ve gotten your

raised bed garden set up and the seeds into the soil! Just in case you’ve gotten a touch of the “procrastintors,” here’s a small kick in the pants to get you motivated.

Nothing could be easier than planting your own small raised bed garden and growing some incredible veggies for the winter! It may sound intimidating but what is better than spending some quality time in the great outdoors during the best time of the year in South Florida?

If you have yet to start on your raised bed, here are some suggestions to expedite the process. Whether you’re a novice or experienced, you can do this.

First, start by jumping online

G e t Y o u r G A R D E N i n G e a rIt’s not too late to plant

that winter garden!

By Shelly Allen

34 GIRL STIR I 2011

Page 35: GIRL STIR October

and visiting El Dorado Heirloom Seed Company at www.eldoradoheirloomseeds.com. You can order all the different types of seeds you want to plant and they’re all Non-Hybrid, Non-GMO, Heirloom seeds. After all a good vegetable begins with a good seed and their seeds are the best I’ve found! They are offering a great deal on their “all in one” kits that include trace mineral pellets for your soil.

Now that you’ve got your all in one kit coming, it’s time to get down to Home Depot and get your supplies for your raised bed. In the last issue of GIRL we told you all about planning your raised bed so I won’t go back over all of that, if you need a refresher go to www.TheGirlMagazine.com and check out our archives.

Here’s what you’ll need: (2) 8ft x 6in x 2in cedar boards, (1) box of 2 1/2 in stainless steel deck screws, they come with their own bit so don’t worry about that. (1) pine 2in x 4in board any length A drill with a bit holder. Garden SoilCompostPeat Moss

Now the beautiful thing about Home Depot is that they will cut your wood for you. So once you have your wood find someone in that department and tell them you need it cut to size. If

you are building a box that is 5 feet long and 3 feet wide, have them cut 3 feet off of your 8 foot cedar boards. Now you have your 5 feet in length and your 3 feet in width.

Now you need to have them cut your 2in x 4in pine board. You essentially need 4 brackets, one in each corner of your box, so you want them to cut 4 pieces to 6 inches in length (the same width as your cedar boards).

Now grab enough organic soil and organic compost to fill your box, along with a small bag of peat moss and head to the check out.

So you’ve got your supplies home, now what? Find a spot in your yard that stays sunny six hours a day, as most veggies need six hours of sun per day, and assemble your box. Lay out your wood in box form and assemble the box with a bracket in each corner. use your drill to run your 2 1/2 in SS screws into the bracket to fix each side in place. Repeat until done. To make running those screws in easier, use a hammer to tap the screw into place and make sure it is straight, then run in the screw.

Throw in equal parts soil and compost, mix it together with some peat moss and your raised bed is ready for your seeds! See, that wasn’t so bad was it?

People have been drinking raw milk from animals for thousands of years. Whether

it’s from cows, goats, sheep, camels, yak, water buffalo, horses, donkeys or even reindeer, unheated, unprocessed milk has been a safe, reliable food source for a good, long time.

Even in the tropics, and centuries before refrigeration had been invented, raw milk was an important food source for many cultures. By exploiting the preservative benefits of fermentation, primitive peoples were able to take a great food and make it even better. Having access to a nutrient-laden food from their animals gave many cultures a distinct advantage over their hunter-gatherer contemporaries (1).

Rather than having to go from kill to kill, with sometimes days in between, even nomadic tribes like the Maasai nearly always had a protein source at hand, whether it was milk, blood or meat (2).

With a readily available food supply at hand, members of societies were freed up to pursue more productive things like making babies, building permanent communities, conquering their neighbors and everything else that comes with not having to spend energy hunting for food.

Considering raw milk’s role throughout history, it’s simple to see that it’s not a deadly food. If it were, all those dairy-loving primitive cultures would have died out long ago, leaving their vegetarian cousins to mind the store. At the very least, people would have dropped it from their diets entirely. And we haven’t even gotten to germ theory yet...

Closer to home, our early American ancestors lived in a farm-based economy. As the Industrial Revolution reached our shores, the cities swelled with job seekers lured from their farms by the factories and mills. By 1810, there were dozens of water-powered operations lining the rivers of southern New England, all staffed by thirsty workers.

With raw milk and whiskey being the main beverages of choice (hopefully not mixed!), demand for both grew along with the cities. When the War of 1812 broke out, the supply of distilled spirits from Europe essentially dried up. Although the conflict only lasted about two years, it’s impact on our country was substantial, and strangely enough for milk, particularly nasty.

To meet the soaring demand for spirits, distilleries soon sprang up in most major cities. In one of the most bizarre twists of entrepreneurial insight, some brilliant soul thought it would be fun (and profitable) to confine cows adjacent to the distillery and feed them with the hot, reeking swill left over from the spirit-making process (3).

As you might guess, the effects of distillery dairy milk were abominable, and for many of those drinking it, amounted to a virtual death sentence. Confined to filthy, manure-filled pens, the unfortunate cows gave a pale, bluish milk so poor in quality, it couldn’t even be used for making butter or cheese. Add sick workers with dirty hands, diseased animals and any number of contaminants in unsanitary milk pails and you had a recipe for disaster.

Lacking its usual ability to protect itself,

Page 42: GIRL STIR October

and with a basic understanding of germs or microbes decades away, the easily contaminated “pseudo-milk” was fed to babies by their unwitting mothers. In New York City during 1870 alone, infant mortality rocketed to around 20% and stayed there for many more years (4).

The situation languished for years until two men stepped up to the plate from different directions, united by a disaster common in the day - the death of a child.

In 1889, two years before the death of his son from contaminated milk, Newark, New Jersey doctor Henry Coit, MD urged the creation of a Medical Milk Commission to oversee or “certify” production of milk for cleanliness, finally getting one formed in 1893 (5).

By joining with select dairy experts, Coit and his team of physicians (unpaid for this work, by the way) were able to enlist dairy farmers willing to meet their strict standards of hygiene in the production of clean, certified milk.

After years of tireless effort, raw, unpasteurized milk was again safe and available for public consumption, but it cost up to four times the price of uncertified milk. New York philanthropist Nathan Straus, who lost a child to milk contaminated with diphtheria, felt differently. He believed the only safe milk was that which had been pasteurized. Straus made a fortune as co-owner of Macy’s department stores and spent decades promoting pasteurization across America and Europe.

Using his considerable finances, he set up and

subsidized the first of many “milk depots” in New York City to provide low-cost pasteurized milk (6). While infant mortality did fall dramatically, other technological advances, such as chlorination of water supplies and reduction of previously ever-present horse manure (through the arrival of the automobile) occurred in the same time period making it difficult to say which change was most responsible.

Pasteurized and certified milks managed to peacefully co-exist for a time, but by the mid-1940’s, the truce had become decidedly uneasy. In 1944. a concerted media smear campaign was launched with a series of completely bogus magazine articles designed to spark fear at the very thought of consuming raw milk (7).

Government officials and medical professionals, swayed by corporate dollars and lies, have effectively taken this valuable, healing food from the mouths of the people. Only in recent years has the consumer backlash against valueless processed foods grown to the point where access to clean, raw milk is once again being considered a dietary right.

Planted in your garden, parsley attracts predatory insects that will

eat many pests that would otherwise target the rest of your plants.

Companion planting is the ancienttechnique of planting different crops inclose proximity that can provide benefitsto each other. For example, the famousthree sisters planting widely used by native people across North America involved planting beans to fix nitrogen in the soil, corn for the beans to climb, and squash to shade the ground.

In a garden, parsley excels at repellingharmful insects and attracting beneficialones. Beetles dislike parsley leaves andwill avoid it, an effect that can be

extended by sprinkling nearby crops with parsley leaves or a tea brewed from them. If you let your parsley flower go to seed, it will attract predatory wasps and hoverflies that will kill caterpillars and other garden predators. Tomatoes in particular like being planted near

parsley, as the herb attracts wasps that kill the tomato hornworm. Parsley planted near rosebushes will actually make your roses more fragrant.

One caution, though: don’t plant mint and parsley close together, or neither plant will thrive.

There were no tomatoes in Italian food, peanuts in Thai food, or chili peppers

in Indian food in the year 1450.

When you think of Italian food, one of the first things that probably comes to mind is tomato sauce. Thai peanut sauce is recognized around the world, as is the spiciness of Indian food which comes from chili peppers. Yet when Columbus set forth westward from Europe, none of these things would have been part ofthe recipe.

Tomatoes, peanuts and chili peppers are all native to the Americas and so were unknown in the Old World prior to Columbus’ voyages.

Tomatoes were originally domesticatedin Peru and spread from there to Mexico.Peanuts were also domesticated in theAmazon, while chili peppers appear to have been domesticated separately in both South and Central America. All three were important crops to many cultures in the New World thousands of years before Europeans had ever heard of them.

Many other important food crops have anAmerican lineage, including squash, corn, avocado, chocolate, and many varieties of

beans. Even the so-called “Irish potato” was unknown in Europe before the fifteenth century. It was actually domesticated in the Andean highlands of Bolivia and Peru.

To make it simple, he talked people into investing with him. Trouble was, he didn’t invest their money. As time rolled on he simply took

the money from the new investors to pay off the old investors. Finally there were too many old investors and not enough money from new investors coming in to keep the payments going.

Next thing you know Madoff is one of the most hated men in America and he is off to jail.

Some of you know this. But not enough of you. Madoff did to his investors what the government has been doing to us for over 70 years with Social Security. There is no meaningful difference between the two schemes, except that one was operated by a private individual who is now in jail, and the other is operated by politicians who enjoy perks, privileges and status in spite of their actions.

“History, despite its wrenching pain, cannot be unlived, but if faced with courage, need not be lived again.” -Maya Angelou

By Shelly AllenPhoto: NYC Police Authority

Did you know on September 11, 2001 a 47 story sky scraper collapsed

at 5:20pm? In many large cities across the nation this sky scraper would have been the largest in the entire city. The building was World Trade Center, Building 7. It was never hit by an airplane and suffered only minor office fires, yet the official investigation says the building collapsed because the fire burned so hot, it weakened the steel supports causing the building to implode on itself, into its’ own footprint. In the history of architecture this phenomenon has never happened, nor has it happened again since 9/11.

I’ll never forget where I was on September 11, 2001. I was in my truck on my way to work when I turned on the radio to hear that a small plane had hit the World Trade Center. I pulled into a small donut shop I knew had several televisions inside. I ran in only to discover with horror that it was in fact a large jet plane that had slammed into the tower. I watched in disbelief as the second plane rounded into site and slammed into the other tower. There was no denying it, we were at war. The only question that remained was, with who? Who would do this? Who COuLD do this? We all know how the Official Story

wtc 7

never Forget

unfolded.

Middle Eastern men with box cutters high jacked four planes that day and flew them into buildings (causing them to collapse) and into the ground murdering 2, 976 people, most of them American citizens. Terrorists, EVIL DOERS.

Well, I was IN hook, line and sinker. Then the darndest thing happened recently, I watched a video by a bunch of engineers and architects that began to poke holes in the collapse theory. Not only that, but these engineers, physicists, architects, all of these really smart people (much smarter than me) were discussing how those three buildings collapsing defy the laws of nature.

Defies the laws of nature? What a second, I remember science class and I remember that the laws of nature are constant and unchanging. Do you remember that? Gravity is a law of nature. What goes up must come down, right? If you jump off a building, you are going to hit the ground. So…if laws of nature are constant and unchanging, and the collapse of these three buildings defies those laws, how DID those three buildings defy the laws of nature on that one day and collapse in a pile of dust into

world trade center, buIldIng 7,

their own footprint and kill all of those innocent people?

Now at this point, I already know what you are thinking, “Oh here we go with another 9/11 conspiracy theorist.” I will tell you, I am not a conspiracy theorist…but I do like to know the truth. What I know for sure is when you look at all the information together, the official story does not add up. You do not have to believe in conspiracy theories to use your brain, look at the scientific facts and say, “Wait a second, this doesn’t make any sense.”

I could write another 20 pages giving you all the ways in which the official story does not make sense, but who am I? I am not a physicist, an architect or an engineer, but there is a group of architects, physicists and engineers who have written a detailed report of the findings of their investigation. When the group formed four years ago they had only 200 professionals, today they have over 1550 verified architectural and engineering professionals who agree with the results of their investigation, and have joined their cause to demand that Congress open a new investigation as to WHY those buildings collapsed on September 11, 2001.

They KNOW how architecture works and they have already gone through all of the evidence, conducted their own experiments, and have concluded beyond a reasonable doubt, that it was in fact a controlled demolition that brought

those buildings down. All three of them. These people are so passionate about this that they have even formed a non-profit organization and have dedicated their lives to discovering what happened to those buildings on 9/11. They have made several DVD’s showing their methodology, experiments, and conclusions which you can watch for free on our BLOG at www.thegirlmagazine.com. Don’t take my word for it, come watch for yourself.

So why is this important? Why is it important to know why the buildings collapsed? The simple answer is so we can prevent this kind of tyranny from ever happening again to the American people. Maybe it wasn’t your family member, your husband, your wife, or your child directly involved this time. But if we don’t get to the bottom of this, who knows what is on the agenda for the next time. I don’t know about you, but I keep hearing politicians say things like, “…a nuclear bomb going off in one of our cities.” The fact is, we can’t afford not to know the truth. The American people deserve the truth. Once we get to the truth, then...we can deal the rest.
