1St. Bernard

RedevelopmentSt. Bernard Square (as seen below) is currently blighted and, with a part-ner, I worked to envision a redevel-opment project. Main focus was to

reastablish an urban center by bring buildings closer to the street/create public space for residents. A garage

(with access to apartments in the mixed use building) replaced large

empty parking lots.

Urban Space was import-ant to this project because

not only did we want to give residents a place to sit and enjoy their communi-ty, but we thought it would attract businesses (such as a grocery store that would be replaced) to the area, giving the stores some

“loyal” consumers.

View of the CBD from a car’s perspec-tive. Street front properties would slow traffic, thus increasing safety.

A few examples of background data and re-search we did on the area to make sure we were looking at the project from all angles.

5Final project in GIS course. The objective was to find a problem and try to use GIS as a tool to show where the crime was happening (the dots on themaps,) and to possibly link it to other situations or details. It was at this point in my college career that I began to understand how GIS can visually illustrate what is going on. This “story” it tells is hugely important in the process of fixing the original problem, just as it helped me make the connections which eventually led to me theorizing ways to reduce crime in Pittsburgh.
