Gerunds as Subjects

• Running is a great form of exercise.

Gerunds as Objects

• I enjoy watching funny movies.

• I remember talking with him.

Gerunds as Objects of Prepositions

• He met lots of people by joining a dance club.

• I’m good at making sushi.

• I’m used to having very little sleep.

Gerunds with Possessives

• Sara’s cooking makes mine look like dog food.

• I really like his singing voice.

Gerunds in the PAST

Having met Jane in my first week of school helped me throughout my college career.

** We use a past gerund to emphasize the difference in time between two actions.

**The simple gerund is also correct in many situations.

Gerunds in the PASSIVE

Present: being + past participle

I don’t like being told what to do.

Past:having been + past participle

I’m still angry at having been told what to do.
