Geoquip Marine is a global geotechnical business, continuously operating four offshore geotechnical drilling spreads

for clients and in addition manages and operates three vessels, including two drilling vessels. Geoquip is currently

involved in an innovative new project, the design, engineering and production of a highly technical deep-water drilling

    vessel.

Marine geotechnical engineering primarily concerns the design of foundations for overwater structures and

anchorage, as well as the assessment of burial performance for pipelines, cables burial and other appraisals such as

the stability of subsea slopes. Geoquip operates drilling equipment in connection with offshore oil and gas structures,

offshore renewable energy installations, coastal and river infrastructures engineering and our expertise and

equipment has many applications in the military, mining and petroleum industries.

Through accurate seabed data obtained using investigative and geotechnical testing techniques perfected by

Geoquip over a number of years, we are able to achieve large cost savings for our clients and their projects.

We have seen an increased demand for our geotechnical services as well as our drilling and sampling techniques for

mineral exploration, further to the developing interest in subsea mining.

Geoquip Marines drilling expertise means that the company is able to satisfy even the most highly specialised of

client requirements. Recent client projects have included drilling to a few hundred metres below the seabed to detect

shallow gas pockets prior to the drilling of an oil well, as well as the drilling of a hole to install instrumentation for long-

term monitoring of a reservoir or structure.

Headquartered in Switzerland, we have operations in the UK and West Africa and operate on behalf of clients in the

Middle East, Africa and the Far East, with drilling and geotechnical teams present in all of these locations throughout

    the year.

In addition the vessel has an A frame for use with a suite of geophysical and seabed sampling equipment for site surveys, pipeline and cable route surveys. This combination makes the MV Albatros 1 unique in the ability to deliver truly integrated solutions for marine and nearshore site investigations.

A comprehensive range of wireline downhole sampling and testing tools is available including PCPT (Piezocone Penetration Test), piston sampling, push sampling, wireline core barrel and percussion (hammer) sampling. All downhole tools are fully compatible within the 5 API drill string. A range of drag and specialised coring bits are provided. Station keeping during drilling activities is performed with a four point mooring system consisting of four anchor winches with 1000m of wire on the forward pair, 1500m of wire on the aft pair and four 1 tonne flipper delta anchors. Position control is achieved using the C-Nav dual frequency DGPS positioning system for up to 10cm accuracy in three dimensions. For geotechnical operations such as vibro- coring and seabed CPTs the vessel is able to hold position using its thrusters and variable pitch propeller. Real time position data is displayed in the survey room and on a hheellmmssmmaannss didissplplayay onpon ththee bbrriidgdge.e.

  • MV ALBATROS 1

The geophysical data acquisition and geotechnical data processing takes place in the dedicated office which overlooks the drill floor. Acquisition units are rack mounted and interfaced to on board computers. The office acquisition and processing computers are networked to plotters, printers and scanners. Surplus network points are available for additional portable computers. On board communications are installed in the office with voice, internet, email and fax channels available through an inmarsat link. On board the MV Albatros 1 is a fully mobilised soils laboratory, adjacent to the drill floor within the superstructure of the vessel. In the soils laboratory routine sample handling, photography, classification and storage is performed in addition to the following test types:

water content, bulk and dry density

    carbonate content

    laboratory miniature vane

    fall cone

    torvane

    pocket penetrometer

    unconsolidated undrained triaxial

point load (determination of Is(50) for rock) Recovered samples are stored in a temperature controlled environment prior to shipment to an onshore laboratory. Operations from the MV Albatros 1 are normally conducted 24 hours per day with two 12 hour shifts operating back to back. The vessel operates to current ISM standards and all site investigation activities are subject to strict QA/QC control procedures. Reporting of geophysical and geotechnical investigations including detailed borehole logs, charting and preliminary engineering results can be prepared on board. Such information is included in a typical field report which can be issued to the client at the point of demobilisation.

  • MV ALBATROS 1

The A frame at the stern of the MV Albatros 1 has been designed and installed to be capable of handling a wide range of seabed geotechnical and towed geophysical equipment. Seabed geotechnical equipment which can be deployed includes a ROSON 40 seabed PCPT unit, vibrocorer, gravity corer, box corer and grab sampler. For bathymetric surveys a Simrad EM3000 or a Reson 8101 multibeam echosounder are available for deployment on an overside pole mount. Side scan sonar magnetometer and low frequency seismic tow fish can be deployed from the afterdeck of the vessel utilising the A frame. A full suite of high resolution seismic equipment may be installed on the MV Albatros 1 for particular projects. Resistivity surveys have been performed from the MV Albatros 1 followed by ground truthing from seabed PCPT testing and drilling geotechnical boreholes. The performance of survey, geophysical or seabed geotechnical work is independent from the geotechnical drilling system, which means that integrated projects can be performed where geotechnical drilling is combined with other site investigation techniques. Multi-disciplinary training of geotechnical engineers and project geophysicists within Geoquip Marine enhances the ability to perform entire site investigation projects as a unified project team and to maximise the interpretation and integration of gathered data. The MV Albatros 1 is particularly suited to working in shallow water having a draft of 3.5m. For nearshore projects such as port and harbour developments, pipeline and cable shore approaches and oil and gas terminal investigations the MV Albatros 1 is capable of performing both survey and geotechnical investigations. The MV Albatros 1 has sufficient laboratory capacity to perform offshore analyses on recovered sediment and water samples and to provide correct storage until samples are delivered to an onshore laboratory for further testing.

    GEOTECHNICAL DRILLING RIG GMR600

The Geoquip Marine GMR600 offshore geotechnical drilling rig design is based on over 30 years experience of designing, building and operating such rigs. It is a fully heave compensated, offshore geotechnical drilling system. The GMR600 is suitable for conducting drilling and sampling in all soil conditions up to 600m (water depth plus borehole depth) using steel A.P.I. drill pipe. The principle of easy transportation and subsequent mobilisation on board a vessel of opportunity is one of the main design premises of the GMR600. Based on ISO container sized dimensions, each derrick section is an approved shipping container, unique to this series.

The rig has a Dando 1000 top drive power swivel capable of handling a maximum 5 API drill string length of 800m. An 18t seabed frame is used to clamp the drill string to enable downhole sampling and in situ testing to be performed using a suite of downhole tools:

GMCPT200 the 200kN seabed CPT system (separate data sheet available on our website or upon request)

GMW1200 the 1200 metre WISON DAP system (separate data sheet available on our website or upon request)

A drop in wireline core barrel is used where variable cemented materials are encountered enabling core samples to be obtained without the need to recover the drill string. All downhole tools are fully interchangeable within the single drill string and bottom hole assembly such that any sampling and testing regime can be accommodated. regime can be accommodated.

    Near shore Drilling Spread

For nearshore geotechnical site investigations, Geoquip Marine can provide a drilling spread

complete with INOVA rotary flush drilling rig and wireline WISON in situ PCPT testing

capabilities, ready for mobilisation onto a liftboat or other working platform.

The INOVA drilling rig is capable of conducting drilling, sampling and testing operations from a jack-

up drilling barge. A simultaneous drilling and casing system is operated with this rig - this

being far more efficient in terms of time and equipment than traditional rod based drilling

    systems. The

wireline piston sampler or core barrel, and the casing are advanced together, ensuring a high quality

sample recovery and a stable borehole. When full, the piston sampler or core barrel is delatched from

the lead length of casing, brought to deck level and the sample extruded horizontally.

Guar gum powder is used to form the flush medium during drilling operations. It is mixed with

seawater, and the resulting mud or flush is then pumped downhole, providing lubrication during

drilling, stabilising the borehole and lifting away the cuttings from the base of the hole.

Piezocone Penetration Testing (PCPT) using the A.P. van den Berg PCPT system (WISON-APB)

can be conducted with this spread. It is a wireline system, and can be used interchangeably

with the sampling and coring barrel, giving the advantage of a flexible sampling and

testing regime. As with the sampling and coring equipment, this wireline testing system

  • ensures maximum efficiency during drilling operations. The 10cm2

cone with a 3m stroke is an

ideal tool to be used in soft ground, giving high quality data.

Parameters recorded by the cone and displayed in real-time on the acquisition computer,

include tip resistance, sleeve resistance and pore water pressure. The stroke length during a test

is measured by a calibrated flow cylinder integrated within the PCPTs umbilical winch.

The nearshore spread can be mobilised with a geotechnical soil testing laboratory, allowing

technicians and geotechnical engineers to determine soil classification and strength

parameters for use in engineering during fieldwork operations. Testing that can be performed in the

field laboratory includes: miniature vane, pocket penetrometer and torvane shear strength testing, bulk

and dry densities, and unconsolidated undrained triaxial testing and full geotechnical field descriptions

to BS 5930 or ASTM standards.

This drilling spread allows the acquisition of high quality data in real-time, which coupled with

on board logging and laboratory testing, allows engineering analyses such as spudcan, pile capacity

and pile driving, to be conducted in the field.
