Agenda for Today• First, we’ll hear your reactions to the neighbourhoods that we

visited – Halliburton and Departure Bay – in terms of walkability, and any modifications you would make to your checklists based on that experience

• Then I will report some information that Reena and I calculated

• Then we’ll do a planning exercise involving the adjacent disused military base

Data on the Three Neighbourhoods

size ratio

• Departure Bay- approx. 719, 375 sq. m 1:1.20

• Townsite- approx. 314,202 sq. m 1:1.13

• Halliburton- approx. 329,984 sq. m 1:118

This may need recalculating, as it seems unlikely that the ratio (‘as the crow flies’ divided by shortest route) would be nearly as low for Departure Bay as for Halliburton. What do you think?

Design Criteria for Planning Exercise• Consider the context (e.g. adjacency to VIU, Colliery Dam Park, the

Parkway, Harewood, etc.)• Think about a development that could mutually complement the

campus• Think about mixed uses, including # of housing units, etc.• Think about internal circulation network• Think about connection to external transportation networks• Think about servicing all modes of transport• Think about green spaces, greenways and green ‘linkages’• Think about plantings and protection of natural features• Think about public space and urban design• Think about sustainable building practices

In the meantime, I will have Reena calculate the approximate size of the base property.

Modus Operandi

• Cut acetate to fit your map and tape on• Brainstorm• Do a rough sketch in pencil on a separate sheet• Put your names on the acetate and transfer your

concepts onto the acetate, with a key to explain the shapes and colours• Be prepared to present your planning concept for

the site and how it relates to its surroundings
