Market Share of Film Genres 2014

By understanding the standing of my chosen genre (Teen Drama) which is a sub-genre of Drama therefore it had the third highest market share last year. Also looking at the highest grossing films from the drama genre last year I can see how many were teen dramas so I can see how successful they were. The top drama film of 2014 was in fact a teen drama, however in the top 10 there were only 2.

Most Successful Films

Out of the top 10 grossing drama films in 2014 only 2 were teen dramas. These were: The Fault in our Stars (#1)It brought in a gross profit of $124,872,350. Selling a total of 15,284,253 tickets. If I Stay (#10) It brought in a gross profit of $50,474,843. Selling a total of 6,178,071 tickets.

The Fault in Our StarsRotten Tomatoes rated the film 6.8/10 stating that it is “Wise, funny, and heart-breaking without resorting to exploitation, The Fault In Our Stars does right by its bestselling source material.”

The fact that the film is based off of a best selling novel is a factor in its success.

It’s success could also be down to its young cast that may be recognised from other projects.

If I StayRotten Tomatoes rated the film only 5/10 stating that “Although Chloë Grace Moretz gives it her all and the story adds an intriguing supernatural twist to its melodramatic YA framework, If I Stay is ultimately more manipulative than moving.”

Despite this the movie was obviously a success as it was rated #10 in the drama genre. This could be down to the fact that the film was based off of a best selling novel and also the fact that some of the cast members are recognisable from other productions which would add appeal for the audience.http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/if_i_stay/?
