Check your enrollments BEFORE January 10 deadline

We hope that most of you have at least started your enrollments for this year. These are the steps for 4-H clubs, leaders, and members to be fully enrolled:

• Register club – club contact leaders • List approved members – club contact leaders • Enroll & complete training – all leaders • Enroll & submit payment – all members • Make sure any issues are resolved to get enrollments complete – all leaders

and families. Information about enrollment processes, deadlines, etc. is available on our website. Families: please log in to check that you are enrolled in all your clubs and projects, and make sure your payment is in the office before the deadline. Club Leaders: check in with all your members to make sure they received a confirmation email and that they signed up for the correct projects. Members or leaders must send in payments to the office with the Enrollment Fee Worksheet by January 10. We know that making sure everyone gets enrolled is a lot of work and that learning a new system can be a challenge. We appreciate all you do to help “make the best better.” If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact Kelly Redwine, the 4-H Secretary. We’re happy to help!

To keep our members safe, OSU requires that all volunteers complete a Criminal History Check every two years. In between these checks, you are required to self-report any convictions. Contact our office for instructions on how to report a conviction and OSU will determine if that conviction affects your work with the 4-H program. We also follow up on reports from others in our 4-H community who may know of a conviction or serious accusation.

How do youth find their voice? How do they identify a community need, propose a solution, and make real change? Spring Classic teams are forming now!

Spring Classic is a Statewide 4-H event where county teams compete in Skill-a-Thons, Quiz Bowls, Judging, and Knowledge contests in their project areas. Clackamas County will be qualifying Intermediates and Seniors in all events this winter. 4-H Faculty approval is required for all Spring Classic contestants.

• NEW! Spring classic is including some Family Consumer Science contests. (FCS Skills contest and FCS Quiz Bowl) and hold a virtual livestock judging contest!

Contests for HEARTH/FCS, Dog, Small Animal, Horse, Livestock, and Shooting Sports project areas will be held virtually May 14-16 and May 21-23. The Quiz Bowls are the second weekend and the other contests are the first weekend. There will be a required orientation session before the event. Clackamas County recommends that members enter no more than three contests at Spring Classic across all project areas. If you think you will qualify in multiple contests and project areas, make a plan before committing to being a member of a team. Members are responsible for checking the schedule to make sure that they can do the contests without significant conflict and devote time to studying and team practices/ preparation time. Interested youth should attend their project Advisory committee meetings to learn more.

Telling Your 4-H Story January 7 and 14

The impact that 4-H has on the lives of our youth is a powerful story that needs to be shared. A two-part workshop will be held to help older 4-H youth prepare to engage with local and state stakeholders. The sessions will be on January 7 and 14, 2021 via Zoom, 3:30 to 5:00 pm. The workshop will help youth identify impacts, create stories, and understand how to use stories to build support for the Oregon 4-H program. The workshop is open to 4-H older youth, those interested in leadership, county 4-H Ambassadors, and 4-H staff. Watch for registration details coming from your county Extension office soon.

Financial Basics

4-H and tax time

Many 4-H activities can lead to tax deductions and a few may require you to pay taxes. Here are a few things to keep in mind as you fill out your tax return this year. Remember to consult your tax advisor or www.irs.gov for details.

$ Most donations made to 4-H clubs or advisories are deductible. You must have a receipt showing what you donated that specifies if you received anything in return for your donation. You may need additional documentation to prove the value.

$ Money spent while volunteering, including photocopies and travel, may be deducted. The value of your time cannot be deducted.

$ Money paid by an individual for a market animal at the auction, show entry fees, and expenses for most project areas are NOT tax-deductible.

$ 4-H members who earned money (especially over $600) from their 4-H project may need to file a tax return. Market animals sold at the auction can be reported on Schedule F.

Page 7: General Interest...You must re-enroll each year to be a leader or member in the Clackamas County 4-H program. After December 31, 20 20, you are no longer considered a 4-H leader or

7

Fundraising proposals All clubs are REQUIRED to apply to fundraise at least two weeks before the activity is scheduled. A Fundraising Proposal and $5.00 fee, to cover the fundraising insurance, needs to be submitted and approved for the liability insurance to be available to the clubs participating in the event/activity. The fee is due when the fundraising proposal form is submitted. If clubs fail to submit a completed form and pay the fee, they will not be allowed to run any more fundraisers. We need to know what and how money is being raised in the name of 4-H and have a record of the fundraiser.

HEARTH Projects Home Economics, Expressive Arts, & Horticulture

Volunteer and Member requirements waived for 2021

The HEARTH Advisory continues to promote a year-round program with more participation and educational opportunities. Adults/leaders and youth need to continue to support the program and attend committee meetings and training. Even though we are not able to offer in-person events, there are many opportunities for youth and leaders to engage in 4-H programming online. Clackamas County HEARTH committee has and will continue to offer online educational workshops and events in 2021 but needs assistants and teachers in most of the project areas. Please plan to participate or help with online workshops and project education.

HEARTH Meetings With no mandatory meeting this year, leaders and families are strongly encouraged to attend monthly online HEARTH Advisory meetings to keep up with opportunities and project news. The HEARTH project committee meets every third Monday of each month at 7:00 pm via Zoom. Everyone is welcome to attend. The meeting topics include:

Upcoming events and workshops HEARTH County Fair planning, updates, and activities Awards and Fundraising needs

The January 18 meeting at 7:00 pm can be attended online or call-in using Zoom. To attend online go to https://beav.es/J3E (Password: CC4H2021) or you can join by phone by calling 971 247 1195 with Meeting ID: 947 4593 2989. 2021 Fashion Revue Challenge: Inspired by Literature

Due to popular demand, the Fashion Revue Challenge for the 2021 fair season will be repeated from last year: A garment or outfit inspired by your favorite book, short story, poem, or other prose. The options are unlimited. In fact, according to Google, there are 130 million books in the world. Choose one and use your research talents, creativity, and imagination to produce your fashion masterpiece.

2021 Country of Celebration

We are also repeating the country from last year. It’s a big world out there and this year the country that will be featured through the Celebrate our World classes will be the African nation of Uganda. This landlocked country in East Africa is steeped in culture and environmental diversity. Its rich culture extends from art and dance to regalia and foods. Break out your research skills and enjoy exploring Uganda then share how the knowledge gained influenced your 4-H experience through a fair entry! Please be sure you create something new if you entered these classes last year!

Horse Public Speaking and Presentations Contest Saturday, March 13

Save the date! Our annual communications contest will be in March. We are expecting to conduct the contest live using Zoom. Watch for a flyer and registration information later in January.

What we know about spring and summer Horse Events

We are all looking forward to the day that it is safe to gather in groups and hold in-person activities with youth. It is too soon to say when that will be. This list includes possible dates and options for those who like to reserve dates in their calendars. February: There will not be any clinics in February. March: The spring Tack Sale is canceled. April 25-26: Horse Pre-Fair. Unlikely to be in-person. Unsure if it will be replaced

with a virtual opportunity. May 16: Western Gaming Pre-Fair. Unsure if this event will occur on this date, be

rescheduled, or be canceled. It will not be virtual. June 7: Horse Fair entries due. June 12: Date is on hold with the Event Center for possible activity. June 29: Horse Leader Fair Meeting with final information about the event. July 8-18: Possible dates for Horse Fair. The event is unlikely to include overnight

camping. A schedule of events is unknown. The event may be virtual, similar to last year.

Horse record help available on Zoom

Get your record books caught up now, so you have more time for riding later! Tonya Rourke (503-702-7265) and Denise Knight (503-829-7665) are available for virtual clinics and consultations. They would love to help members, leaders, and parents learn about 4-H Record Books.

Tracking volunteer needs on Facebook

The most up-to-date volunteering information will be posted in the Facebook group Clackamas County 4H Horse Volunteers. Comment on posts to sign up volunteers from your club. Contact Staci Farrell at 503-929-4627 with questions. Help is needed with volunteer coordination – contact Wendy Hein for more information.

Practice-at-Home Resources

We know that it is hard to teach horsemanship through virtual meetings. We are building a section on our Horse page of resources to help members learn new skills. It will include links to how-to guides and short demonstration videos. If you have a favorite resource, send the link to Wendy Hein to be added to the section!

IMPORTANT: paperwork DUE April 5 for Pre-Fair and Horse Fair

For participation in Horse Fair and/or Pre-Fair activities (in person or virtual), the following completed paperwork will be due for each member:

Official 4-H Health and Code of Conduct Form Horse Project Identification Form 4-H Horse Pre-Fair and/or Western Gaming Pre-Fair Entries “I Did It Myself Horse” Identification Form

The February mailing will include instructions on how to turn in forms. Please be on time and have all your members’ forms completed and signed. Have questions? Contact Horse Superintendent Shirley Byrne at 503-545-4153.

What you need to know about leasing a horse

If you lease a horse, it is up to you to complete a legal agreement with the horse’s owner. 4-H does not supply lease forms but you can find sample forms online. An excellent list of what to include in a lease can be found in your 4-H Horse Project Guide. If you want to show at Horse Fair, you will also want to review our county’s project horse rules to make sure your lease does not disqualify your horse. You must have primary responsibility for the care, training, and riding of the horse from at least April 1 through County Fair (or State Fair), and the horse may not be placed in the hands of a professional trainer during this time. Only the 4-H member may show the horse after April 1. Lesson horses and “partial” or “sponsorship” leases may not qualify since the member rarely has primary responsibility for the horse.

Dog Project

Dog Events

Annual Dog events that typically happen early in the year are still in the planning stage as we work on ways to meet and comply with COVID restrictions. Watch Clover Comments, or participate in the monthly Dog Advisory Committee meetings (the next one is on January 4) for specific days and times for the following events:

• Dog Bowl* – 4-H dog members to test their knowledge of dogs and the 4-H dog project in this fun game!

• Dog Judging* – Challenging and fun event that encourages youth to learn more about dogs and practice decision-making skills.

* Intermediate and Senior members who participate in Dog Bowl and Dog Judging contests can qualify to be on the county team to compete at Oregon State 4-H Spring Classic!

Important reminder on leased dogs

If you are borrowing a dog from another family/individual to use as your 4-H project dog, you must submit a “Clackamas County 4-H Record of Dog Lease” to 4-H Dog Advisory by April 1, 2021. This is an annual requirement, even if you are using the same dog as last year. Forms are available through the Extension office upon request. Questions? Contact Jan Williams at 503-650-3127.

4-H Member shares Christmas cheer

Esa Overturf, a Clackamas County 4-H Dog project member, handmade 80 Christmas cards for residents of Avamere, a senior assisted living home, as a community service project. 2021 Lambing School January 16 Glide, OR

This is an excellent opportunity to learn how to increase your odds of getting live lambs on the ground and off to a good start! This school will be held in a commercial sheep lambing barn, so there will be ample hands-on opportunities. The cost is $50 per person, which includes lunch. The school will be limited to 12 participants, based on the first 12 registered. Preference will be given to those attending for the first time. Pre-registration is due by January 11. See the flyer for registration information and more details.

Livestock Judging Team Needs YOU!

Intermediate & Senior Livestock Members - Clackamas County 4-H needs YOU on our team! We are recruiting members for Livestock Judging, Skill-a-thon, and Quiz Bowl teams to compete in the Oregon State 4-H Spring Classic, which will be held May 17-19 in Redmond, and at State Fair. If you have any questions, please contact coach Todd Schwenk (503-668-8404) or Jan Williams.

Market health forms – get them now!

Remember to get your Oregon 4-H Market Animal health forms for Beef, Sheep, Goats, and Swine. These forms are required for market animal exhibitors to show at County Fair and State Fair. Start working on them now, because the records require information about early vaccinations and feed. You can get copies at the Extension office or download them from our website.

A great resource for Swine members

You can keep your pigs healthy and gaining weight by following some key recommendations. In this publication from OSU Extension Swine Specialists, you'll learn about housing, feeding, and health considerations when raising feeder pigs, both for a traditional system and a pasture or free-range system.
