Notes: In 1950, the world’s population was just 2.5 billion. In October 2011, it hit 7 billion and we can expect another 2 billion people by 2050. Additionally we will face an ongoing trend of diet changes in emerging markets, where we also see the strongest population growth with +80 %. To highlight a consequence of this growth; grain demand will increase by +50% by 2050.

The Syngenta Story

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Notes: To “grow more from less” we need solutions that link people, land & technology – the fundamentals of a sustainable production system. Improving farm productivity by: Transparent regulations that make safe new technologies available to all farmers are needed. Innovate rapidly and efficiently – not only to develop new products, but to adapt them effectively to the varying needs of farmers around the world. Offering new business models that provide tailored solutions and access to markets and finance, on top of education and training. We need to be a partner, not just a supplier Animated build on mouse click Reducing agriculture’s environmental footprint: Farming uses 40% of the world’s land and 70% of its fresh water withdrawal. With both in increasingly high demand it must become more resource efficient to preserve the land and reduce water intake. Agriculture also relies on biodiversity for crop pollination, healthy soils and water, and air purification. Thus farmers need to protect biodiversity by not expanding into natural ecosystems. Animated build on mouse click Building rural prosperity: Strong rural economies are the key to sustainable and productive agricultural systems. We want farmers to earn better incomes and enjoy better lives, so that they can be true stewards of the land. It’s getting harder to gain access to transparent market information. We therefore need better information and sharing systems. To keep young people in farming, farm profitability and labor conditions need to be improved. This is a challenge which requires Syngenta technologies and training.

The Syngenta Story

Some of the major brands that we consume are made from Syngenta crops. ● Seventy percent of Scotch Whiskey and 50 percent of all Guinness beer

comes from Syngenta barley. ● In Europe, 20 billion liters of Europe’s beer comes from Syngenta barley. ● Every 7th tomato in the world comes from Syngenta. ● We spend more than $2.5 million per day on research and development. ● Our products are more rigorously tested than medicines. On average, it

costs $200 million, 10 years and more than 180 studies to bring a product to market.

What is EDC? What is M2M? What is a “marketplace”?

● EDC = Electronic Document Communication ● M2M = Machine-to-Machine

- another commonly used acronym for same purpose - These are the transactions which can flow from a trading partner

(distributors, dealers) into Syngenta, and from Syngenta back out to them..

● Marketplace = Vendor which processes transactions, with multiple formats, translates when required to other formats, and transfers to intended destination(s) on a near-real-time basis

● ECC = SAP transaction systems

Syngenta North America EDC Overview

● Syngenta supports about 240 distinct transactions (unique integration) with external partners, managed by the three channels:

● EDI messages are scheduled for transfer daily ● About 35 functional message types (use-cases) are being supported which

include Order Create, Ship Notice, PMR, Invoice ● Majority of messages follow AGGATEWAY standards (about 19 messages

don’t follow the standard)

● The legacy EDC architecture supports integration to/from

90 partners and 3 external solutions - About 17 Data/File formats supported

16

How Elemica fits with the Syngenta strategy The strategy is to grow the business. This involves M2M connections with many more partners and extending the transaction menu. ● What is the business case for leveraging Elemica’s services?

- Current platforms are fragile • Current platforms require extensive support, “hand-holding” to keep

running • Errors / dropped messages are difficult to troubleshoot / recover

- Bottom Line: • The current environment is not scalable • It is expensive to maintain

● Why use a transaction hub service? - Transaction hub services have proven capability in our industry - Enables scale - Reduces costs - Improves customer intimacy
