Dear Fellow Members,

It’s hard to believe we are already a third of the way through 2016, but it’s true and I would like to share some observations about GCC from my up-close and personal view this year. First and most importantly, I have been continually

impressed by the talent and commitment of our fine staff to make Greensboro Country Club a welcoming and exciting place for our membership and their families and guests. I encourage you to read this entire newsletter to get a real flavor of all of the many events and offerings your staff has designed for virtually every age and every interest of our diverse membership. As we enter the peak season, there are a myriad of activities and events for every member of your families and you are truly missing out if you don’t take the opportunity to participate.

A second observation is just how difficult it is to communicate about our Club to you our members. This newsletter is emailed and sent hard-copy, we prominently post notices and upcoming events on the bulletin boards, pro shops, and our website, weekly emails are sent to all members highlighting special activities and restaurant offerings, special emails are sent to specific interest groups like golfers or tennis players, and our advisory committees make phone calls to both inform and generate interest for events in their particular areas. Yet, I constantly hear from members expressing regret that they missed a recent fun event because they didn’t know it was happening. We will be expanding our communications efforts with text messaging later in the year, but to get the greatest value for your membership, please take a little extra time to stay aware of the many, many great things your Club is offering.

Thirdly, until recently, I was not aware of how much we were all missing out when we did not make reservations before coming to eat at GCC. Obviously,

we can staff more efficiently and effectively if we know how many are coming for dinner, but one of the benefits of being a Club member is being able to drop in unannounced at our Club for a great meal and personal service. But, if the staff knows you are coming for lunch or dinner you will get some extra special treatment I bet you didn’t know about. Before each meal, the floor manager and wait staff meet to discuss the coming event. If you have made a reservation, they will talk about your known preferences for food and beverages, plus other tendencies you might have. You will receive service that can only happen where the staff has a sincere interest in making your visit the best, most personalized experience in Greensboro. So, make that call even if it’s only an hour before dinner time. You will be glad you did!

Lastly, GCC is a truly special place where our members can be involved and make positive impacts by just speaking up. The most obvious impact is in membership recruiting. New members are the lifeblood of any private club, so invite your friends and business associates to visit and consider joining our ranks. There is a little extra in it for you with the incentive recently announced by Matthew Rankin, our Membership Chairman. You are also encouraged to offer ideas, concerns and encouragement to our advisory committees. And, consider joining one of the committees. The committees are assembled around the end of each year, so keep an eye out for your invitation. Right now, we are adding a new Youth Activities Committee to help create and coordinate our programs for children. If you are interested in serving, please contact me or Lindsay Pegg at the Club. Our commitment to making GCC special for young families is unwavering as exemplified by our new "Kids Corner" child watch program and the new Youth Pavilion.

I look forward to seeing you at our Club!

Welcome New Members!Membership MessageSpring has finally arrived, and we’re gaining momentum! Thank you to everyone sponsoring prospective members or having discussions with potential new members. The Membership Committee has been working diligently to foster and promote membership at our Club. Year to date, we have welcomed five new members and we have 11 prospective members who are at various stages of due diligence, posting, or approval.

The Membership Committee and I are pleased to bring two initiatives out of retirement to promote our membership growth and offer a nice incentive for those members who remain engaged through the membership process as a sponsor. The first is a $500 dues credit for any member who successfully sponsors a new member. There’s no cap on the amount of the dues credit and number of prospective members one can sponsor, so please consider extending an invitation of membership to a friend or associate whom you feel would enjoy the many benefits of membership in our fine Club.

The second incentive is a two-week trial membership for qualified prospective members. This program allows a prospective member and their family to experience our Club on their own time and for two weeks. The prospective member will be issued a temporary member number, and at the end of the two weeks, reimburse the Club via check. We are confident that once a prospective member is able to experience our Club, a move to permanent membership will be the next step.

Please let me, the Membership Committee or Brittany Mitchell, our Membership Director, know if you have any questions regarding the two-week trial membership, how someone can become a member of our Club, or how we can help showcase the Club to a prospective member. You can reach Brittany at (336) 275-8506 or [email protected].

What’s Happening at GCC?In addition to the newsletter, Greensboro Country Club uses a wide variety of technology-based communication tools to keep you up-to-date regarding events and activities, as well as to provide you with important Club and member information.

WebsiteThe GCC website is www.greensborocc.org. There is a public side that everyone can see, and there is a “Member’s Only” side that requires a username and password to access. This member’s only restricted access is necessary members make reservations and tee/court times through the site. In order to quickly access the member’s only section, be sure to check the “Remember Me” box right below the areas where you enter your username and pass-word. The next time you log in, your browser and automatically fill in your username and password, and all you have to do is click “Enter” to be taken to the “Member’s Only” potion of the website.

Email CommunicationOne of the most vital communication avenues used by the Club to communicate with the members is via email. This is the fastest way to reach the membership for everything from Club events to important operational information. We understand that members often receive a number of emails from various sources each day. The Club is making a concerted effort to reduce the number of emails being sent by combining upcoming events into a weekly email that is sent to all members.

Interest-specific emails are sent to members who have elected to receive those emails by using the “Opt-In Groups” function in your member profile on the website. To get to your profile, log in to the internal website, click “Directory” and then find “My Profile.” Select which opt-in groups are best suited for how you use the Club, and then only receive those emails when we send out information pertaining to your specific groups. You can opt-in or opt-out of these groups at any time, allowing you to truly personalize your GCC email communications.

FacebookThe Club uses Facebook to communicate details for upcoming events as well as display photos from events and Club videos. When you visit our page, be sure to "Like" and to "Turn Notifications On" so our posts will show up in your news feed.

From the ChefIt’s here! Time to fire up the big grill, ignite the logs and start cooking poolside. May and June mean a lot of different things to people. If you’re a chef at GCC then it means it’s time to open the

Donald Ross Terrace, pool snack bars and get ready for another great summer season. The weather has been great, and we are excited to open the Donald Ross Terrace on Fridays and Saturdays starting May 6th.

The Sunset Room and Bar hours of operation will not change this summer, offering food and beverage ser-vice Tuesday through Saturdays. By now, I hope most of you have been to the Sunset Room and sampled some of Chef de Cuisine Tim Thompson's creations. Tim and I will focus on Carolina farm-to-table menus this summer. We will have our signature items, and in addition, we will create a fun weekly menu featuring foods from the local farmers market - focusing on what is in season. Executive Pastry Chef Lucia Bobby will also focus on offering fresh seasonal berries and products from North Carolina.

We are getting geared up for another fun pool season won’t be long before we plug in the slushy machine and open up the snack bars. Whatever your plans may be, please remember Scott Harmon and his private events team are here to help organize any size party from a poolside birthday party to a wedding for five hundred. We are here to help make memories. See you in the dining rooms!

"The Judgment of Greensboro"Wednesday, May 25th6:30 p.m. | Ballroom

On May 24, 1976 California wine-makers poured a touch of the unexpected at a tasting in France that many thought was a publicity stunt. In this strictly controlled, blind tasting, a panel of esteemed judges placed two American wines above their French counterparts.

One day after the 40th anniversary of the Judgment of Paris, GCC will hold the “Judgment of Greensboro.” The tasting, as strictly controlled as the production of unique boutique wines, will be replicated under the watchful eye of our very own oenophiles, and you are invited to be a part of it.

Mr. George Taber - the only reporter present at the tasting and judgment in Paris - will be our special guest. He will share behind-the-scenes stories about the “Gallic Gems” that the French judges used while swirling, sniffing and sipping the California winners.

We have secured the younger versions of these coveted juices, and our culinary team will prepare the perfect dishes to pair with

each. Wines will remain concealed until the night of the tasting for a truly blind-tasting

experience. We are calling all super-tasters, terroir connoisseurs and wine lovers to join us

for this unique event to celebrate the world of wine!

Golf UpdateWow…GCC is a fantastic place! You have made this newcomer feel incredibly well received with your warm and engaging reception. I often speak of the quality of a club being in direct proportion to the quality of its

membership. And you have knocked it out of the park! Your greetings, best wishes and helpfulness have been greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Our golf season is now in full swing, with activities, events, tournaments and fun for the entire family. We would like to draw your attention to the junior golf activities this year. The future growth and prosperity of this great game hinges on the next generation. We want all juniors to feel welcome and with the varying activities; we truly have something for everyone. PGA Junior League is one such opportunity. It is heavy on fun, highly social and an inclusive opportunity for boys and girls ages 13 & under. GCC will be well represented with two teams. Participants wear numbered jerseys and play on teams with friends, like other recreational sports. Please call either Professional Shop for additional information and to register your child or grandchild.

We also have a great line-up of tournaments and fun events for our adult golfers. Be sure to bring your guests and enjoy the beautiful courses of GCC this summer.

Junior Player DevelopmentThe mission of the GCC Junior Player Development Program is to instill an excitement for the game in every participant, so golf becomes a life-long endeavor. In collaboration and involvement with the entire golf professional staff, the program creates a stimulating, fun and safe environment.

Each session ensures every participant is involved in age-appropriate activities, has fun, feels comfortable, interacts with peers and friends, and comes away with an appreciation and excitement for the game.

In keeping with our mission, the Junior Development Program started Sunday, April 3rd with players ages 3 to 6. The 45-minute session enhanced golf skill development with activities promoting fun, imagination and creativity. This session will continue every Sunday through the summer and fall at Irving Park beginning at 1:00 p.m.

The 7 to 12 age group sessions began Wednesday, April 6th at Irving Park. A record turnout commenced this program allowing the kids to develop golf skills through fundamental sports skills, participation in multiple sports during the session and activities involving patterns of movement. This session will continue every Wednesday starting at 4:00 p.m.

Players ages 13 to 18 started their sessions on Wednesday, April 6th at Irving Park as well. Participants played six holes working on putting, choosing the best shot for their situation, learning how to use the rules to their advantage and learning how to play ready golf. This session will continue every Wednesday through the summer and fall starting at 5:00 p.m.

Thank you for the opportunity to help your junior players develop their appreciation and excitement for the game. The golf professional staff appreciates working with the future golfers of Greensboro Country Club.

EtiquetteWhen most of us think about etiquette on the golf course we think about things like playing in turn and being quiet or maybe standing still when a playing partner is hitting their shot. As a superintendent, I know

these aspects are important but there is often a part of golf etiquette that is overlooked or neglected. The three main areas I am referring to are ball marks, tracks left in the bunker and divots.

Ball marks or pitch marks left on the putting surface are a big problem at most courses, especially those with Bentgrass greens. Although at low-round private clubs, such as Greensboro Country Club, some clubs do a better job than others on this issue. Although we generally do a good job here at GCC, there is definitely some room for improvement from members, guests and staff. The staff’s primary role in this endeavor is to educate and communicate the need for proper ball mark repair and create continual awareness. The member’s role is to ensure that not only they them-selves are repairing their own ball marks but they should also politely communicate this to members within their own playing group when they see someone who has neglected to repair their ball mark. In addition, as the amount of our junior play has grown in recent years, parents should also take the opportunity to educate their children regarding proper golf etiquette. Whether we are new to the game or we occasionally forget, please remember that ball marks left unrepaired may take two to four weeks to recover versus a repaired ball mark, which will grow over in only two to three days. Additionally, unrepaired ball marks diminishes the quality of the putting surface and the course takes on an unnecessarily bad appearance.

The second area of etiquette I would like to address as we enter our golfing season is raking of footprints in bunkers. As we all know bunkers are hazards that are not usually fun places to be. Having to play a ball out of someone’s

footprints makes that an even less enjoyable experience. On average, staff completely rakes out the bunkers three times a week, and track out footprints as best we can on the other days. Unfortunately, disturbed areas in the bunker left unraked by a golfer may go one to two days with-out be attended to by staff depending on the week’s work-load. We have a relatively small maintenance crew on each golf course, and do not have the resources to rake bunkers on an everyday basis. Please be considerate of your fellow members and guests playing behind you by raking the bunker. When you are finished raking a bunker, place the rake back in the bunker. This saves the maintenance crew a lot time when mowing around bunkers. Golfers playing out of a newly raked bunker should notice rakes are carefully placed in the bunker by the maintenance staff. We evenly distribute the rakes across the bunker for easy access. We also place the rakes parallel to the line of play to minimize the chances of a ball coming in contact with a rake. And lastly we place rakes on the low end of the bunkers so as not to trap a ball into a bad lie.

The last etiquette item concerns divots. Ideally we would never replace a divot in an area of warm-season grass like the grasses that exist on all our fairways and tees (exceptions would be really deep-long pelts that remain intact). The majority of the time, divots result in small pieces of sod that won’t heal over and actually slow the underlying grass from repairing itself. Sand divot bottles are provided on the carts, and the staff does occasionally go around and fill in divots left behind from walkers and others who have not repaired their divot.

We have two outstanding golf courses at Greensboro Country Club, and during this golfing season let's all take a little extra pride in them by caring for them. Educating your fellow playing partners and junior golfers on proper golf course etiquette will not only show your fellow members and guests courtesy, but the end result will be a much better golf course and playing experience for everyone.

Thank you, and enjoy the courses!

Fitness UpdateSummer is here and I know you are all ready to get outdoors to enjoy more golf, swimming and tennis here at GCC, but don’t forget about your fitness needs as well. You must have strong, flexible and functional muscles to play your optimal

game of golf and tennis and to be able to swim further and faster! GCC fitness is here to help you with all your “muscular” and other health and fitness needs.

We have many classes that can serve these needs or meet with one of our many personal trainers who may specialize in the sport of your choice. Athletic conditioning is offered every Tuesday from 9:15 to 9:45 a.m. to build strength and endurance for your sport of choice. Flexibility is also a very important component for athletes. Our yoga classes and individual Pilates reformer training are perfect for those stiff muscles and joints that may have developed over the cold, winter months.

You ask? We will deliver! A “men’s” specialty yoga class was created recently by a group of men desiring a flexibility class just for them. This class is held on Saturday mornings at 7:30 a.m. For more information, please call our reception desk.

So, you’re not an athlete but you want to stay healthy or need to get your body into vacation, beach and pool shape? We have plenty to offer you as well! If you haven’t tried out our popular Barre classes, there is no better time than now! This class specializes in toning the legs and core and the participants love it. Body Pump and CX classes build muscles as well. And don’t forget heart and lung health, you’ll need them in optimal condition to sustain lots of walking on vacations. Our cycle and ME classes will get you ready to endure any cardiovascular activity.

If you have health and fitness questions, we have answers! Call today for your complimentary orientation or to try out a class on us. We are looking forward to seeing you in the Fitness Center!

Although the "Males Over 40" were in the game in 2014, they were prepared to take it all this year! The "Females Under 40" joined the Final Four, but we missed seeing the "Males Under 40" play the game. A winner was crowned in each participating category, and they will be taking home a prize they can use while attending any basketball game. Congratulate the winners for getting GCC to the Final Four!
