This project’s purpose was to design student housing at Hofstra University in Long Island, New York. Seen above is the master plan phase of the project. The retrofitted master plan includes all team member’s individual housing projects which fit into a newly proposed bike loop, which is intended to wrap the campus, cut down on car traffic, and allow for easier mobility for students, faculty and guests. Also student and faculty operated greenhouses were incorporated into the project as well as as commercial areas to allow for students to grow their own food and shop for needed items on campus to cut down on automotive transportation. A runoff collection systen was also added along the western edge. The diagram highlights the bike loop in yellow, the intended flow of foot traffic in red, and the orginal majority flow of foot traffic which is indicated by the thick red strip.

PROJECT 2: STUDENT HOUSING

This portion of the project shows the main ideas of it through diagrams. The first is a site plan that shows the main student housing in red, the faculty housing in a light shade of pink, and the shared green houses in a dark shade of pink. The second is another diagram illustrating that the project has different edges and each one has a different experience. The third is a diagram that shows the design process of the form and composition. It illustrates the different unit types and the circulation. The fourth diagram shows each unit type in section and their schemes for light reflection for deeper light pennetration and cross ventilation.

Two slab buildings with single loaded corridors, connected by a bridge and a series of faculty row houses make up the housing which frame an open gathering space. The rooms face East to capture the less harsh Eastern exposure for early morning light. The corridors face West and are outfitted with sun shades and light shelves to keep the themselves cool and allow the rooms to receive reflected Western light. The building is fitted up against the beginning of the elevated portion of the bike loop that serves the entire master plan.

The point of this project was to learn how to aggregate housing units. One unit would be a single unit and the other would be a double unit The first exercise was to take a housing unit from two separate existing complexes and alter them in some way. The second exercise was to take each of those units and aggregate them individually. The third exercise was to take both of those units and aggregate them together to make a new complex complete with both vertical and horizontal circulation and room for common spaces.

This project was to design a community center for environmental research in Greenpoint, Brooklyn along Newtown Creek. The design has multifuntional gathering spaces, classrooms, a water treatment and research facility, a sloping roof to collect water in an outdoor rain garden, and a park for the public.

TEAM MATES: LENIN ROJAS, ANTHONY SANNA

This project was an interior redesign of The J. Max Bond Center, located in the lower level of The Spitzer School of Architecture. The cener provides opportunities for students and the community to grow and prosper. The team’s design included turning the space into a two floor, double height gallery with multifuntional, private and exhibition spaces. The exterior would also be redesigned to showcase the space inside which included a transparent facade and a cantilevered overhang with the name of the center on it. In addition to that the team redesigned the entance way to Aaron Davis Hall and the grounds between both buildings to promote a South Campus to The City College of New York.

The design was for a musician and and recording studio producer. The concept is two cubes intersecting to represent equality. The house for the musician would be outfitted with materials that reflect sound to make the music tones reverberate throughout the spaces. The house for the producer would be outfitted with materials that absorb sound in order to maintain control of the sound. Each house would have specific rooms based on an ideal mathematical proportion for sound. These spaces would be either practice spaces or recording spaces. The combined houses have different split levels and a central void that connects them and allows each client access to each other’s homes.

This was a site analysis project where sound, people, and street art were looked at. A sound from outside was made and based on the surroundings it was recorded how far that sound traveled. It was noted where people tended to gather in certain parts of the neighborhood in relation to those certain sounds.

Gary’s House Chris’s House

This project was two study objects in motion over time. in this case the sound omitted by certain objects along with their trajectories and reverberations were recorded in two separate apartments. It was found that the apartment with harder surfaces like hardwood flooring had more reverberations than that of the apart-ment with mostly carpeting.

This project was about designing a library. This library is based off of the geometry of the site and the Manhattan streets. Located on the corner of Spring Street and Mulberry Street in lower Manhattan, this is designed as a children’s library that allows for constant movement and play. The design has a solid cored library and a voided auditorium that are bridged together with an elevated walkway that allows for movement via slides into a playground.

TEAM MATES: JARELL PEETS

Studying wood joinery to create a working system of joints that would create space, while exploring the negative space of the joint at the same time, was the objection in this project. Here we have a series of mortise and tenon joints with some pivot joints being supported by a concoction of dovetail joints.

This point to this project was to design a modular row house off of the proportions of 27 feet high, 36 feet long, and 18 feet wide. This house, tucked under The Highline in Manhattan, is designed for a musician. The initial step was to create a series of music rooms based on a mathematical ratio for sound. These rooms were created and arranged as work spaces and the space that was left over became the living and circulation spaces.

For this project, the objective was to analyze a film and take stills from that film and develop them into an architectural form. in the film, “Shutter Island” the main qualities or ideas that were expressed were compression and understanding. Therefore, the architectural form created was a series of spaces that moved from an open but dark space to a more compressed but well lit space. Here the light represents understanding.

This project deals with creating a spacial sequence based on the case study from project 1. It can be seen that there is a central “portal” that gives a clear view straight through the project with flanking maze like structures. The central portal concept comes from Palladio’s design of movement from the entrance to the inside and then to the outside.

This project deals with creating a series of spaces that can be inhabited by that of the human proportion. The concept for this design is movement toward light. The inhabiter is pulled through the long narrow space by the light that is piercing through these openings that eventually lead to a more open and well lit area.

Building off the concept from the first project from this semester, the spaces move from small, tall, and dark spaces to large, low, and light spaces. The spaces are created by carving away at the site and the structure creates a pathway through that site, which creates a cohesive system of site and structure.
