Born in Durham, North Carolina, Dr. A. Frank Bonner grew up in Greenville, South Carolina. The son of Francis Wesley Bonner (deceased) and Nilaouise Carnes Bonner, he was raised in a college environment, almost literally in the shadows of the campus of Furman University (Greenville, S.C). His father retired from Furman as Vice President and Provost, having served Furman for over thirty years as professor and, eventually, as chief academic officer. Frank’s parents instilled in him the values he still holds dear. To this day, his father is his model for everything that a teacher, academic leader, and university administrator should be.

Bonner graduated in 1969 from Furman with a B.A. degree in English. Coincidentally, his major professor was Dr. Phil L. Elliott, son of the legendary president of Gardner-Webb from 1943 until 1961, Phillip Lovin Elliott. After Furman, Bonner earned the M.A. from the University of Georgia in 1971, and the Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1977. His specialty is Victorian literature, primarily the poetry of Alfred Tennyson, and eighteenth-century British literature, with a special interest in Jonathan Swift.

In 1974, Bonner began his academic career as a faculty member at Anderson University in Anderson, South Carolina. He was particularly active in civic life in Anderson, most notably as chairman of the Board of Trustees for Anderson County School District Five. Bonner was assigned various adminis-trative responsibilities at Anderson and, immediately prior to coming to Gardner-Webb, was Associate Dean for Special Programs.

In 1987, Bonner came to Gardner-Webb as Vice President for Academic Affairs. His role later evolved into Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs and then Provost and Senior Vice President. He was named President in May 2005 and took office on July 1.

Bonner has been heavily involved in accreditation work through the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), serving on more than thirty accreditation committees, most of those as the committee chair. He is a member of the SACSCOC Board of Trustees and serves on the Compliance and Reports Committee. He has also served on the nominating committee

for the Commission on Colleges and has chaired four NCAA Division I Recertification visiting committees. Bonner is currently Vice President of the Big South Conference, Chair of the Board of Directors of the International Association of Baptist Colleges and Universities, and a member of the Executive Committee of the North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities.

While at Gardner-Webb, Bonner has remained active in civic affairs, currently serving on the Board of Directors for the Boy Scouts of America Piedmont Council. He is a past chair of the Cleveland County Chamber, a Rotary past President, a Paul Harris Fellow, and he has been a board member for numerous organizations. He is a member of First Baptist Church, Shelby, where he teaches Sunday School and serves as a Deacon. After twenty-two years in the United States Army Reserve, Bonner retired at the rank of Colonel.

Bonner is married to Florence Dell (Flossie) Black of Chester, South Carolina, also a Furman graduate. She is a retired high school mathematics teacher. They have two daughters, Alison Bonner Dalton of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Florence Bonner Crawford of Fort Myers, Florida. The Bonners have six grandchildren.

Gardner-Webb alumnus Chuck Burch is in his 18th year as Vice President for Athletics and his 31st year in athletics administration.

The Charlotte, N.C., native spearheaded the Bulldogs move into Division I athletics, which resulted in Gardner-Webb’s addition to the Big South Conference as an associate member for football in 2001, and GWU's move to the Big South as a full member – which became official on July 1, 2008.

Burch oversees all athletic operations at Gardner-Webb, including management and supervision of athletic programs, facilities and bud-gets. During his career at GWU, Burch has overseen across-the-board improvements in athletics facilities and the addition of seven new sports since arriving in 1997. The most recent addition, women’s lacrosse, will begin play in 2014-2015. Men's swimming was added in 2007-08. Burch is also responsible for continued improvements in the quality and quantity of Gardner-Webb’s athletics staff – with a number of full-time positions created to assist and enhance the entire department.

GWU athletics has seen a steady increase in academic performance since Burch's arrival, and the department has posted a combined GPA above 3.0 in each of the last seven academic years.

In 2009-2010, Gardner-Webb posted its highest finish in the annual Big South Conference Sasser Cup, taking No. 4 in the final standings of the all-sports race. The women’s basketball team captured its first Big South Tournament title, advancing to the first round of the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship Tournament. Two other teams – women’s soccer and baseball – advanced to the league tournament title game in their respective seasons as well.

Gardner-Webb's final year in the Atlantic Sun Conference was fruitful, with several notable wins and the usual high number of strong academic performances by the Bulldogs' student-athletes.

GWU enjoyed its most successful athletics year as a Division I member in 2006-07. Gardner-Webb won its first Atlantic Sun Conference Academic Championship, unseating Belmont University for the title. The Bulldogs also finished third in the men's and women's combined sports standings – a very impres-sive effort in the race for the inaugural Bill Bibb Trophy.

Gardner-Webb's men's soccer team captured the imagination of fans across Cleveland County during its run to the 2006 A-Sun Championship and NCAA Tournament second round. National

qualifiers in Track & Field, swimming and wrestling highlighted com-petitive success for the Bulldogs in 2006-2007.

Burch, a graduate of Independence (N.C.) High in Charlotte, and former member of Gardner-Webb’s football and tennis teams, spent 1991-1997 as Director of Athletics at Liberty (Va.) University, and was instrumental in a successful and well run department in Lynchburg as well. He also served Liberty as Associate Director of Athletics (1988-1990), Assistant Director of Athletics (1984-1988), Sports Information Director (1986-1988) and Assistant Director of Sports Information (1982-1984).

After graduating from Gardner-Webb in 1979 with a bachelor's degree in Social Science, Burch, 55, earned his master's degree from Eastern Kentucky University in 1982.

His wife, Franki, holds a Ph.D. in Health Education from the University of Virginia, and is Associate Provost for Professional and Graduate Studies at Gardner-Webb. The couple has three children, Travis; Danielle, a 2012 graduate of Brevard College; and Amy, a junior soccer player at High Point University.

The Burch's first grandson, Bailey Macrae Burch, was born to son Travis and his wife, Shannon, on September 24, 2014.

Rusty Stroupe (697-541-2, 341-336-2 at GWU) will enter his 13th season with the Runnin’ Bulldogs in 2015, and has made a tremendous impact on the baseball program, the overall campus and the community since joining the Gardner-Webb family prior to the 2003 season. The Cherryville, N.C., native has taken the ‘Dogs new heights at the NCAA Division I level – and now sits just three wins shy of the 700-win mark for his career, which started in 1989 at North Greenville. The 2014 season was a milestone season for Stroupe as well, as he became the all-time wins leader in program history – moving past Hall of Famer Clyde Miller with a 5-2 win over VMI on March 29. He has led Gardner-Webb to a pair of conference tournament champi-onship game appearances, with the ‘Dogs falling just short in the Big South title game in 2011 and in the famed 15-inning Atlantic Sun Conference title game in 2008. Stroupe has led GWU to at least 25 wins in 10 of his 12 seasons at the helm, and has posted six finishes in the top-5 in conference play. A major career highlight came in December, 2012, as Stroupe was presented with the FCA Jerry Kindall Character In Coaching Award at the annual ABCA Convention in Chicago. Gardner-Webb won 32 games in 2012 and 29 in 2013, averaging more than 30 per game during that stretch – which included notable wins over No. 4 North Carolina (2012) and No. 10 South Carolina (2013). Shortstop Ryan Hodge and relief man Mitch Warner each earned Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America honors in 2012, becoming the first duo to do so in one season since Gardner-Webb's move to NCAA Division I. Matt Simmons became the fifth GWU freshman to earn that honor fol-lowing the 2014 season. In 2013, Gardner-Webb established a new school record for team ERA (3.35) and fielding percentage (.969), with Matt Fraudin becoming the first GWU pitcher to earn first-team All-Big South honors since the Runnin' Bulldogs moved into the league in 2009. In 2011, the 'Dogs were one of the nation's most potent offensive teams, ranking 37th nationally with a .302 team average and among the Big South's best hitting squads all season long. Gardner-Webb finished the season ranked in the top-50 in scoring (26th), runs scored (29th), hits (33rd), doubles (44th) and doubles per game (49th). Defensively, Gardner-Webb ranked No. 23 nationally in double plays turned. When the dust settled at the end of the 2011 season, Gardner-Webb had posted a strong 34-23-1 record that included a weekend sweep of NCAA Tournament participant and preseason top-25 member St. John's in March. The Runnin' Bulldogs took well to their sparkling new home stadium, forging a 17-10 mark in John Henry Moss Stadium / Bill Masters Field. First baseman Dusty Quattlebaum was named Big South Conference Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year and became the first GWU baseball player to be named first-team Capital One Academic All-America. In 2010, Stroupe's very young squad was competitive throughout a tough schedule, forging 25 wins that included a win over ACC member Wake Forest on the road. His 2009 team established numerous team records offensively, breaking the school's season batting record with a .327 aver-age - topping the .324 average that had stood as the top mark since 1971.

The 2009 squad also set single-season records as a team for on-base percentage (.398) and most home runs (65), while third baseman Justin Loyd became the latest member of the schools .400 club, earning first-team All-Big South honors. Gardner-Webb has shown under Stroupe that it can compete with the best, and with style. The Runnin' Bulldogs ran to a school-record 122 stolen bases in 2008, breaking the record of 119 set just one year earlier in 2007. GWU also made a late run that gave the 'Dogs the No. 5 seed at the 2007 A-Sun Tournament, and posted a pair of non-conference wins at SEC member Georgia - marking the fourth time in six games against Georgia that GWU has prevailed under Stroupe's watchful eye. In 2006, Stroupe led a very young team to 24 wins, which included early victories over Missouri Valley Conference champ Evansville and ACC member Maryland. Stroupe also saw fifth-year senior Blake Lalli sign with the Chicago Cubs prior the June, 2006, draft as a free agent - marking the fifth Diamond 'Dog under Stroupe's watch to ink a deal with a major league organization. In 2005, Gardner-Webb finished in a tie for fifth in the Atlantic Sun Conference - the third year in a row that GWU had finished at least fifth in the powerful league. GWU also picked up its first A-Sun Tournament win, upsetting No. 1 seed Troy in the opening round. Ace Zach Ward became the highest drafted player in GWU baseball history - going in the third round of June's MLB Amateur Draft, capping a record-setting career in Boiling Springs. Ward signed with the Reds, marking the fourth player to sign a con-tract with a Major League club since 2003 - Stroupe's first season with the program. Catcher Jay McConnell was named Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America. In 2004, Stroupe's Bulldogs posted a 19-11 mark in the Atlantic Sun Conference, finishing only one game out of a tie for second place in one of the country's most competitive leagues. A No. 4 seed in the A-Sun Tournament followed, capping off a 32-25 overall campaign - hich included two wins over No. 14 Florida Atlantic in mid-March. Seniors Jeff Long (Atlanta Braves, 12th Round) and Joey Siak (St. Louis Cardinals, FA) continued their careers on the professional level after the 2004 season was completed. Stroupe led his first set of Bulldogs to a 33-23 record in 2003, includ-ing an 18-15 mark in the A-Sun. In the process, the Bulldogs qualified for the A-Sun Tournament, which takes the top six of 12 total teams from the regular season standings. Ward was also named to the Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America Team, becoming the first Gardner-Webb player so honored. During the Bulldogs' 33-win trek through the 2003 season, Stroupe led the squad to a pair of wins over SEC foe Georgia, as well as wins over preseason top-25 squads UCF (2), Florida Atlantic (1) and Stetson (1). GWU rose to as high as No. 53 in the Division I RPI - efore finishing the season with a rating index of 79 (out of 287 Division I teams). Stroupe also has head college coaching experience at Lander (1998-2002), Brevard College (1993-1997) and North Greenville College (1991-1992). He and his wife, Karen, have three sons - Will (21), Cal (18) and J.T. (14). In addition to his coaching career, Stroupe has written a book and has been regular contributor as a non-sports columnist with the Shelby Star.

ASSISTANT COACH | HITTING Assistant coach Kent Cox is in his ninth season with the Gardner-Webb program, and continues to to mentor the program's hitters and infielders – two areas the Run-nin' Bulldogs have shown continued improvement in since Cox's arrival on campus. The double play duo of Ryan Hodge and Scott Johnson enter their senior seasons as the top two men in school history in double plays turned, and have become the collective lynchpin of Gardner-Webb's defense – while progressing well at the plate. In 2014, Hodge batted over .300 for the second time in his career, while Johnson fin-ished with a career-best year at the plate. Freshman slugger Matt Simmons proved to be a quick study at the dish, earning second-team All-Big South Conference honors and Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America honors in 2014. Simmons is the second of Cox's hitters to earn the honor, joining Hodge (2012). The infield trio of Hodge, Johnson and Henry Rundio proved strong for Gardner-Webb in 2013, and first baseman Brad Collins finished at the top of the Big South Conference, and among NCAA Division I leaders, with 27 doubles as a senior. Collins' total was just three shy of the school record held by current Major Leaguer Blake Lalli (30 doubles in 2005). Cox was instrumental in Gardner-Webb finishing strong again in 2012, with the team rapping out 108 doubles en route to a 32-28 record. Shortstop Ryan Hodge earned second-team All-Big South Conference honors after leading the team with a .315 average and 16 steals – and became the first GWU position player to earn Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America honors since catcher Jay McConnell in 2005. Three GWU sluggers – Scott Coleman, Brad Collins and John Harris – each established new career-highs in home runs, with Harris earning second-team All-Big South honors as well. In 2011, Gardner-Webb was one of the nation's most potent offensive squads, ranking in the top-50 in scoring (26th), runs per game (29th), hits (33rd), batting aver-age (37th), doubles (44th) and doubles per game (46th). Slugger Dusty Quattlebaum finished 13th nationally in doubles per game, nearly breaking the school's single-season record in that category en route to Academic All-America honors. Gardner-Webb batted .302 with 399 runs scored and 118 doubles in 2011, and advanced to the 2011 Big South Conference Tournament Championship Game. In 2010, GWU batted a solid .312 and averaged 7.0 runs per game with a very young group of hitters -belting 46 home runs on the year. In 2009, Gardner-Webb set new school records for season batting average (.327) and home runs (65), just one season after posting the most total bases (999) in GWU history.Three of Cox's hitters, Daniel Cooke, Justin Loyd and Brock Miller, each earned All-Big South Conference honors in 2009, with Loyd becoming the first Diamond 'Dog to bat .400 since the program's move to NCAA Division I. Prior to joining the GWU family, Cox spent the four seasons as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at his alma mater, Campbell University, in Buies Creek, N.C. During that span, the Camels experienced a burst in their offensive output, with several players ranking among the best in the Atlantic Sun Conference. Under Cox's guidance in 2006, first baseman Mike Priest led the A-Sun in batting with a .402 average, runs scored (62), total bases (151) and slugging percentage (.674) - and was named Academic All-America for the second season in a row. Cox played for the Camels from 1993-1996, earning Academic All-America honors himself in 1995. A three-team All-Conference choice on the diamond and a three-time Academic All-District selection, Cox finished as Campbell's all-time leader in hits (269) and seventh with a .348 career batting average. He ranks in the top-10 in Campbell history in runs (147), steals (32), doubles (39) and total bases (341). Cox is also the toughest player in Campbell history to strike out, fanning just once every 16.8 times at the plate. Cox is also a veteran broadcaster, having served Campbell as a television analyst for men's basketball games and as the play-by-play voice for Camels' athletics for two seasons. A native of Wilmington, N.C., Cox played prep baseball at Hoggard (N.C.) High and attended St. Andrews College before transferring and playing his four seasons on the diamond at Campbell. In addition to his most recent coaching experience at Campbell, Cox served as a volunteer coach with the Camels in 2001, after spending two years on the staff at NAIA Montreat (N.C.) College.

Ray Greene is in his fourth season as an assistant coach with the Gardner-Webb University baseball program, and has developed the Runnin' Bulldogs into one of the best pitching staff's annually in the Big South Conference. One season after setting a school record for team ERA, Greene's arms nearly topped that feat, finishing near the top of the Big Southa gain with a 3.41 team ERA. Matt Fraudin led the league in strikeouts for the second season in a row, fanning 108 batters in 108.1 innings of work. Andrew Barnett wasn't far behind, enjoying a career year himself – and signing a free agent contract to pitch in the Texas Rangers organization following graduation. The GWU bullpen also excelled behind returning arms Brad Haymes, Mitch Warner, Andrew Massey and others. Fraudin enters his senior season as the league's No. 7 draft prospect and as the pitcher opposing head coaches voted in January they would least like to face on the hill. In 2013, Greene's second staff proved to be the best in the program's history in terms of ERA, setting a new school record with a season mark of 3.35 in 513.1 innings pitched. Eight different pitchers, and all three weekend starters, finished with an ERA of less than 4.00 and standout righthanders Matt Fraudin and Andrew Barnett each neared the 100-strikeout plateau – with Fraudin's 96 K leading the Big South. Fraudin became the first pitcher in Gardner-Webb history to earn first-team All-Big South honors, with the Runnin' Bulldogs a member of the league since 2009. Greene tutored a strong pitching staff during his first season, as seven different GWU arms finished the season with an ERA below 4.00 and two freshmen – Beau Hilton and Mitch Warner – turned in 7-win seasons. Warner went on to earn Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America honors, the first Gardner-Webb hurler to do so since Zach Ward in 2003. Relief ace Jeff Howell also established a new school single-season mark for appearances (33), and needs just one more appearance to tie the school's career record. Greene joined the GWU program after spending five seasons as pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at Pfeiffer (N.C.) University. The Laurinburg, N.C., native has head coaching experience in the Coastal Plains League (Thomasville Hi Toms), the SCBL (Morganton Aggies). He started his coaching career at St. Andrew's Presbyterian (N.C.) College, serving as an assistant coach from 2002-2005. Greene also served a stint at Alfred State (N.Y.) University, before returning south to begin his work at Pfeiffer. As a player, Greene pitched for three seasons at Campbell (N.C.) University, before wrapping up his career at St. Andrew's. He graduated from UNC-Pembroke in 2001.

Steedley also spent time as the hitting and catching instructor at the Waxhaw Athletic Barn from 2013-14. Additional experience includes being an assistant coach for the Carolina Vipers of the Southern Collegiate Baseball League during the summer of 2013, as well as an assistant coach at Pfeiffer University from 2012-13. Steedley graduated from UNC Charlotte in 2012, where he was a standout catcher with a career batting average of. 324. Steedley is also a staff member of the Fellow-ship of Christian Athletes, a position he has held since 2013.

For the past decade, Gardner-Webb baseball student-athletes have benefited from high quality care on the athletic training front, with GWU Hall of Famer Kat Ayotte handing those duties on a daily basis. Long respected as one of the top practicioners among her peers in the Big South Conference, Ayotte also handles athletic training duties for men's and women's golf – and serves as a Preceptor in the Athletic Training major in the School of Preventive and Rehabilitative Health Sciences. Ayotte returned to her alma mater in 2003 after serving as head athletic trainer at Newberry College. She holds dual degrees from Gardner-Webb, earning a Master of Arts and a Bachelor of Science during her time in Boiling Springs. As a student-athlete herself, Ayotte starred in two sports – soccer and softball – with the Runnin' Bulldogs, earning All-South Atlantic Conference honors in each of those sports. She finished her soccer career with 98 points and 37 goals. Ayotte was inducted into the Gardner-Webb Athletics Hall of Fame in 2008.
