Lee Lapetina has worked as a food server at Picklesfor more than 32 years and the day the restaurant re-opens for the season is a day that can’t come soonenough.

Lastweek, Pickles awoke from itswinter hibernationand again welcomed folks hungry for deli-style fare. Asthe name implies, Pickles is a New York-style deli withhuge sandwiches, matzo ball soup and other staples.

Pastrami is king, said Chef Armin Cane. Phillycheesesteaks are also popular, he said.

The main menu has remained basically unchangedover the years, but Cane, a graduate of Atlantic CapeCommunity College, adds specials a couple times aweek. And a new item on the menu: a chocolate dippedpickle with nuts.

Really.

Alsonewthis season: anadditional15 to 20 tables, out-side on the boardwalk.

Like Lapetina, Cane goes back to the early ’80s withBally’s, arrivingafterstintscooking inanursinghomeinCherry Hill and at a barbecue place in Lawnside.

“We’re a happy family. Everybody loves workinghere,” said Cane, who previously worked in The Green-ery and The Sidewalk Café at Bally’s, and this winter, worked at 6ix: A Bistro. “So many customers at the cof-fee shop come up to me and ask, ‘When will Picklesopen?’ ”

Tara Coats, who moved to Atlantic City from Pitts-burgh ayear ago towork atBally’s, admits she’s excited.“A lotofcustomersknoweachother. It’sahumblingfeel-ing,” said Coats, a shift manager at Pickles.

Canewould like to keep the deli open year-round, butthe location might be a problem. Pickles does well withpeople walking the boardwalk, but come winter, thenumber of strollers goes down.

Of course, the anticipation for its reopening goes up.

The perfect pickle placeAs Pickles reopens for theseason, customers lookforward to deli delights.

Weezer plays The Event Center June 1 atBorgata Hotel Casino & Spa, One BorgataWay. Showtime is 9 p.m. Tickets are $65and can be purchased by calling (866)900-4849, visiting www.theborgata.com orstop by Borgata’s box office.

In thevideo forWeezer’s1994hit, “Bud-dy Holly,” the quartet performs in a whatappears to be a “Happy Days” episodedressed in early 1960s garb. Think BeachBoys, as they sing a catchy song aboutBuddy Holly andMary Tyler Moore.

The song, from its debut album,Weezer— also known as the Blue Album— set thetone for the melodic and often kitschypower pop group, whichwill play June1atBorgata.

Weezer, formed in1992, featuresRiversCuomo, the primary songwriter, on leadvocals and guitar; Patrick Wilson, ondrums, guitar and vocals; Brian Bell, onguitar, keyboards and vocals; and ScottShriner, on bass, vocals and keyboards.

AWeezerconcert lastOctober includedanarrayof songsandstylesculled fromitsnine albums: “Surf Wax American,” “Bev-erly Hills,” “Undone — The SweaterSong,” “Island in the Sun,” “Hash Pipe,”“Say It Ain’t So,” “Only inDreams” and, ofcourse, “Buddy Holly.” Expect a cover ortwo, which last year featured Foster thePeople’s teenage anthem, “Pumped UpKicks” and Radiohead’s “Paranoid An-droid.”

On the band’s website, the four mem-bers provide their own reasons for being.

Cuomo tells of his interest inmusic thisway: “At18, I freakedout andmoved toLosAngeles to become a rock star. I soon real-ized that I was an idiot and gave up. At thesame time, my girlfriend broke up withme. I was really sad and started to writesongs. Most of them sucked, but it becamea habit that stuck with me. Because I’m soterrible at expressing my feelings direct-ly, I’ve come to rely on music more andmore to express myself.”

Wilson said, “I’ve tried to understandwhat it means to be in a band. All I knowabout music is instinctual or from a rec-ord; I haven’t witnessed much live music. As far as I can tell, being in a band can bejust as important as any other occupation— and so far, it’s far more rewarding.”

The newer member of the band, Shrin-er, explained how he got an invite to jointhe band. “Rivers got my number throughamutualcontact, but Ididn’tknowabout it.So when he called me I thought it was apractical joke. “Yeah right, you’re Rivers

Cuomo, uh-huh’. But it sort of dawned onme:This guy’s being too serious to bemak-ing a joke.”

Tennessee-raised Bell saw Elvis per-form at age 4 and was hooked, he wrote .His professor father exposed him to 45’sfrom the 1950s and 1960s. He eventuallyhadenoughofTennesseeandmoved toLosAngeles to satisfyhis interest inmusic andmovies.

Weezer owes its influences to bandssuch as The Pixies, Sonic Youth, Pave-ment, TheVelvetUnderground andNirva-na. The band has soldmore than10million

albums and played thousands of shows, from festivals to single dates.

Its 1994 debut album was recorded atthe famed Electric Lady Studios in NewYork under the direction of producer RicOcasek, former lead singer of The Cars. The CD featured singles “Undone — theSweater Song,” “Say It Ain’t So” and “Bud-dyHolly,”whichwon severalMTVawardsin 1995.

Rolling Stone writer Andy Greene hadthis to say about aWeezer concert at JonesBeach in New York last year.

“Say what you will about Weezer’s re-

cent output, but those guys know how toput on a show. Selections from their lastfew albums are limited to gems like “(IfYou’reWondering If IWantYouTo) IWantYou” and “Pork And Beans” and the setleans heavily on early classics like “Say ItAin’t So,” “My Name Is Jonas” and “SurfWax America.” They even brought outtheir stellar cover of Radiohead’s “Para-noid Android.” Cuomo bounces around thestage a sense of joy that he never seemedto possess in the group’s heyday.”

Say it’s so:Weezer plays Borgata

Weezer, which rocketed to mainstream success in the 1990s, are is know for its ability toput on a great show. Performances often include hits such as ‘Say It Ain’t So,’ ‘BuddyHolly’ and ‘Pork and Beans.’ PHOTO PROVIDED

Although they are a band that recordedfour albums with sales in excess of fivemillion, a band that has playedwith LinkinPark, PapaRoach,Metallica and appearedon theWarped Tour, it was a cover of aMi-chael Jackson song that put Alien AntFarm on the musical map.

The band, which plays a free concert atthe House of Blues Party Pit on Sunday, covered “Smooth Criminal.” The recordbecame a massive hit overseas, rising toNo. 1 in Australia and New Zealand, andNo.3 in the U.K. It also topped the U.S.Modern Rock charts andwas voted the No. 2 video of2001 in MTV’s countdown.

In their official bio, founding member TerryCorso spokeabout the selec-tion.

“When we were a younglocal band in SoCal, we'dplay a different cover songby a different artist everyshow we would do. Wild un-expected stuff and sometimes not evensongs we were that into. One week we hadbeen throwing the idea of ‘Smooth Crimi-nal’ around the room. The very next showweplayed, weklunked themainriff out forfun, and the crowd went a little crazy. Af-ter that we learned the entire song and su-per-charged it. The rest is prettymuchhis-tory.’’

To this day, thecover is a crowdpleaser.Last year, the band was asked to appearalongsideCeeLoGreen,SmokeyRobinsonand the Jackson Family at the MichaelJackson Forever Tribute Concert in Car-diff, Wales.

But Alien Ant Farm is more than a Mi-chael Jackson cover.

The group has made multiple appear-

ances on “The Tonight Show,’’ and gar-nered support from Carson Daly, “Extra,’’CNN, “AccessHollywood’’ andmore.Theyappeared on the channel's programs “Ce-lebrity Dismissed,’’ “MTV Cribbs,’’ andhosted “House of Style.’’

ThenamecamefromaCorsodaydreamabout humans being cultivated by alien in-telligence, like a colony of ants. In 1999,Alien Ant Farm self-released its debut ti-tled “GreatestHits.”Ayear later, the bandsigned to DreamWorks SKG, and released“Anthology.”

After 2006’s “Up in theAttic,” the band went on hi-atus for a few years beforereconvening in 2009, whichincluded the Warped Tourin memory of MichaelJackson. The band staged asuccessful tour in 2010,where they road testednewmaterial in front of the liveaudience.

“The first batch of thesenewsongs is pretty to the point. Angry, butnotnegative. That isnotpossible in therealworld and that'swhy I lovemusic. I cangetthis all out without hurting anyone,’’ saidlead singer Dryden Mitchell.

“We just cameoff of a three-month tourin the U.S. that made us realize that withthe original line-up back together — in-cludingTyeZamora on bass andMikeCos-groveondrums—wehave fireandhungeragain.Witha freshnewcollection, wehopeto get our core fans excited, aswell as turnsome brand new listeners.”

EMG vice president, Jimmy Swancalled it an honor to work with the band.“For10years, IhaveusedAlienAntFarm's‘SmoothCriminal’ to showallmybands theperfect example of how to cover a song.’’

Alien Ant Farm playsSunday at the House ofBlues Party Pit in Show-boat Atlantic City, 801Boardwalk. Showtime is 11p.m. Admission is free.

The line of peoplewaiting for food atthe rear of the St. Nicholas of TolentineRoman Catholic Church on TennesseeAvenue stretches three blocks on thefirst and third Monday of the month.

“These people anxiously await bagsof groceries,” said the Rev. MonsignorWilliam A. Hodge.

Hodge spoke recently in an unusuallocation for a discussion on feeding thedowntrodden. He stood on the band-stand at Sammy’s Beach Bar, acrossfrom Bally’s Atlantic City.

drink Hodge wasn’t there for a trop-ical drink, but received a check for$10,000 from rocker SammyHagar, thebar’s namesake. “The donationwill buyplenty of meat, fish and poultry for ayear, ” Hodge said.

During the last15 years, St.Nicholashas fedmore than 35,000 residents, andthe $10,000 donationwill do a great dealin aiding their efforts, Hodge said.

“Thank you, Sam, for your generos-ity. You have my own gratitude andprayer.”

Thismarks the third yearHagar hasdonated money to help support causesin Atlantic City. Hagar, a Rock ‘n’ RollHall of Fame inductee got involved inAtlantic City at the request of hisfriend, Don Marrandino, Caesars En-tertainment eastern division president, who attended St. Tolentine Churchgrowing up.

“When I see children who aren’t eat-ing, I get touched,” Hagar said. “Themost bang for the buck is to partnerwith a local food bank.”

Hagar, who develops his own rum inHawaii, was in town to play the Houseof Blues at Showboat with his currentband, Chickenfoot. He has no regretsabout not being part of Van Halen any-more.

“Some of the greatest times of mylife have beenwithVanHalen,” he said.“They're hard people to get along with, those brothers.”

As for Sammy’s Beach Bar, it’s theperfect location. “This kind of bar real-ly belongs on the beach,” said Hagar.

Non-gaming amenities. It’sthe buzz phrase that will makeorbreakAtlanticCity’s future inan era where gambling is asubiquitous as Starbucks. In LasVegas, more than half the reve-nues come from outside thegaming floor. AtlanticCity is no-where near that percentage.

With that as a backdrop, twopanels at last week’s East CoastGaming Congress at Revel ex-amined the importance of look-ing beyond the slot machinesand table games.

Casinos alone cannot be thesole driver of growth, said TomO’Donnell, senior associate atthe Linwood-based SpectrumGaming Group, who moderatedthe panel. Regulatory revisionsneed to be sensitive to the mar-ketplace.

The amenities are not just inAtlantic City, said Steve Bello,manager/director of the Stock-ton Seaview Hotel and GolfClub, a historic hotel and golf

complex that bills itself as thequieter option to Atlantic City.“We have the same amenitiesjust seven minutes away fromthe casinos,” Bello said whileparticipating in a panel, “Tour-ism in a Gaming Market.’’

That said, this is more thanjust competition for the tourist.“Atlantic City is an importantvenue for us,” said Andy Dolce, chairman of Dolce Hotels andResorts, which manages Sea-view. “The collaboration is im-portant.”

Dolce wants to ante up to bepart of new marketing cam-paign.

But there are other issues atplay. Atlantic City is not as suc-cessful as Las Vegas in part be-cause leaving a hotel in Las Ve-gasfeelssafe,Dolcesaid.That isan element Atlantic City isworking on. Air travel was citedas an important aspect in the fu-ture growth of Atlantic City. That hasn’t been an easy taskwith an airport where only onecarrier operates, and more of-ten, serves residents traveling

elsewhere.Therearechallengeskeepingairlineseventhoughtheairport is both comfortable andeasy to use, New Jersey CasinoControl Commission chair, Lin-da Kassekert, said.

Revel, which opened April 2as the newest casino resort, hasstressed non-gaming amenitiesfrom its inception.

Robert Wiedmaier, a Wash-ington, D.C.-based chef and res-taurateur, openedMussel Bar inRevel. He never considered acasino location until Revel camecallingwithanon-smoking, casi-no-secondary approach. “Aftermeeting with them, I said this issomething I’d like to be involvedwith,” he said during the “It’sNot About the Slot Machines’’panel.

So did Neil Moffitt, chief ex-ecutive officer of the AngelManagement Group, which han-dles entertainment andnightlifeat Revel. “Entertainment todayin the gaming market is chang-ing Las Vegas and I hope hereentertainment will be drivingthe market.”

A.C.’s future depends on amenities other than gambling panel saysByWILLIAM SOKOLICCourier-Post Staff

To paraphrase that line in“Jaws,” Atlantic City is going toneed a bigger pond. That was akey point made by the keynotespeaker at the opening of theEast Coast Gaming Congresslast week at Revel.

With competition swallow-ing up Pennsylvania, Delawareand New York, the resort needsto expand where it fishes forbusiness, said Liza Cartmell, president of the Atlantic CityAlliance, the marketing arm ofthe dozen casino halls.

That pond, Cartmell says, now ranges from Boston to theDistrict of Columbia. That’swhere theAlliance has put up to$30million to fund amajormul-ti-media marketing campaigndesigned to show Atlantic Cityin a positive light.

The approach is a multi-pronged one that involves pro-viding a clean and safe environ-ment for visitors; developmentas proposed by the Casino Rein-vestmentDevelopmentAuthor-ity master plan; growing con-vention and meeting business, and the ACA funds.

Almost 30 million peoplecome to Atlantic City each year,Cartmell said. That’s a world-

class audience.“Thosewhovisited in the last

twoyears aremore likely to vis-it,” she said. It’s the ones whohaven’tbeentoAtlanticCity inawhile that need to be cultivated. One of the ways to do that is forthe ACA to get themessage out.

“We have opportunities totake fledgling efforts and buildoutandcreatecitywideevents,”she said.

Cartmell says stories focustoo much on gaming revenues.“But it’s a one-dimensional sto-ry.”

“The conversation shouldnot be ‘What did you lose?’ but‘what did I miss?’ ”

It all depends on how themessage is crafted, how thebrand is perceived. The newbrand campaign revolvesaround the simplicity ofDoA.C.

Target fun seekers over 21are interested in a spontaneousgetaway. After all, Atlantic Cityhas casinos, an ocean, dining, shopping entertainment, a hugevariety of experiences.

“History and culture won’tget people to come, but it helps.Spectacles happen here. Thatcame through in focus groups,”Cartmell said.

Hence one of the campaigntag lines: Do anything. Do ev-erything. Do A.C.
