A matchup of teams sitting in prime position in each conference is ahead when Toronto FC plays host to Sporting Kansas City on Saturday afternoon at BMO Field. Toronto FC sit in a tie for third place in the Eastern Conference, kicking off a critical homestand at BMO Field with a 4-1 win against Orlando City SC at midweek. This is the only league meeting between the teams this season. Sporting have a five-game undefeated streak alive vs. Toronto FC, dating back to the 2013 season. Last year,
SKC won the final two meetings between the clubs – once at each ground – also playing to a draw in Kansas City.
Sporting have won on their last two trips to BMO Field, including a 2-1 win there last year. TFC have never won at Sporting Park. Sporting are undefeated in their last seven home meetings vs. TFC, with six wins and one draw in that time; Toronto FC’s lone win in Kansas City came in 2009 at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.
Coaches record: Greg Vanney vs. KC: first game … Peter Vermes vs. TOR: P13 W9 L1 T3 TORONTO FC Toronto FC extended their home undefeated run, rolling to a 4-1 win against Orlando City SC on Wednesday evening at BMO Field. TFC are in a tie for third place in the Eastern Conference with 31 points from 21 matches. LAST MATCH
TFC took the lead in the 12th minute after Orlando City defender Aurelien Collin was adjudged to have felled Sebastian Giovinco as he cut into the area and referee Silviu Petrescu pointed to spot. Giovinco converted his own penalty, beating goalkeeper Tally Hall with a low right-footed shot.
Orlando City responded within six minutes through Luke Boden. Collecting a pass at the top of the box, Boden shaped a well-placed, left-footed shot towards the top left corner. TFC goalkeeper Joe Bendik got his fingertips to the shot, but could not prevent the ball from crossing the line.
The home side took the lead in the 56th minute, when Giovinco scored his second of the night with a lovely, right-footed freekick from straight out that sailed over the Orlando wall and kissed the left post before going on, rooting Hall helplessly to his line.
Toronto put the match out of reach in the 81st minute from another set piece. Benoit Cheyrou played a short corner to Jonathan Osorio near the byeline, and he flung a cross through the goalmouth, where it was met by Collen Warner at the back post for a header that got past Hall.
The result was sealed in the 88th minute when Giovinco got on the end of a long Benoit Cheyrou pass and carried into the left side of the area, stabbing another shot across Hall and inside the far post to complete his hat trick.
TFC head coach Greg Vanney made one change to the team that fell 3-1 to the New England Revolution at Gillette Stadium. Collen Warner came into the team for the suspended Jozy Altidore.
MLS GAME INFORMATION
TORONTO FC (4-3-1-2): Joseph Bendik - Jackson, Damien Perquis (Eriq Zavaleta 82), Ahmed Kantari, Justin Morrow - Collen Warner (Daniel Lovitz 87), Benoit Cheyrou, Jonathan Osorio - Marky Delgado - Sebastian Giovinco, Robbie Findley (Jay Chapman 72).
TEAM NEWS Toronto FC won for the first time after a loss and a draw, their third win over the last nine league matches. They
have not won back-to-back games since winning three in a row May 23-June 6. For us it was about our mentality and about being more aggressive in terms of how we play; move faster with
the ball, just be more intense and be more engaged and focused. When we do we are much better team, when we don’t we have lapses and we have to get those out of our game,” said TFC head coach Greg Vanney.
Sebastian Giovinco scored his second hat trick, joining the LA Galaxy’s Robbie Keane as the only players in MLS with two hat tricks this season. It was his fourth multiple-goal game of the season, tied for the league lead.
Giovinco also now leads the MLS Golden Boot standings with 16 goals this season, and is in fourth place in the MLS assist standings with 11. Giovinco has 16 goals and 9 assists on TFC’s last 31 goals, dating back to April 4. He has eight goals and three assists over the last five games.
“It’s special every time we get to see him play. He comes up with some amazing moments,” said Vanney. “What I thought was better from a team standpoint is that we moved the ball better which means he gets the ball with more time to do things, that’s important. If everybody takes a half second less on the ball it gives him an extra second to two seconds by the time it gets to him and he starts to run at guys and then guys are having nightmares in the back. That was good for us and we got him in good spots. I think if we hit a couple more passes he would have five or six at the end of the night.”
Said Giovinco: “For me, every goal is my best goal and usually the next one will be the best one. I am happy to score on a freekick because it has been a lot of games since I last scored a freekick goal.”
Benoit Cheyrou recorded a pair of assists, his first assists in league play since June 5, the first multiple-assist game of his MLS career.
“His game was really on in terms of turning away from guys, wrongfooting players enough to get facing forward. He was doing a great job of just dicing and hitting passes between lines that were able to find players who could then move forward. I thought he was very good,” said Vanney.
Collen Warner scored his second goal of the league campaign, both coming over the last three matches. They are his first two goals since the 2013 season, when he was with the Montréal Impact.
“I’ve been finding myself in the box more than usual lately which has been pleasant and I’ve been making the most of my chances. I think our defensive group is coming together really well which gives us a lot of support and a lot of confidence to move forward,” said Warner.
Jonathan Osorio recorded his fourth assist of the season, his second in the last four games. Osorio has a goal and the two assists in the four-game span since July 18.
SPORTING KANSAS CITY Sporting Kansas City failed to win in back-to-back games for the first time in three months, hauled back into a 1-1 draw with the Houston Dynamo on Saturday evening at Sporting Park. Sporting are in fourth place in the Western Conference with 34 points from 20 matches. LAST MATCH
Sporting took the lead in the sixth minute. Benny Feilhaber swung in a free kick from the right wing and Dom Dwyer rose in the box to nod home.
The Dynamo leveled terms in nearly identical circumstances in the 78th minute. From nearly the same spot on the pitch as the SKC goal, Brad Davis swung in a free kick and Ricardo Clark went up to send a header home for the equalizer.
The Dynamo finished the match a man down when midfielder Nathan Sturgis was shown a straight red card by referee Jorge Gonzalez in the 86th minute for a serious foul on Kansas City's Roger Espinoza.
SKC manager Peter Vermes made five changes to the team that fell 2-1 to Real Salt Lake at Rio Tinto Stadium. Chance Myers, Kevin Ellis and Amadou Dia all came into the back four, for Saad Abdul-Salaam, Erik Palmer-Brown and Marcel de Jong. Benny Feilhaber came into the midfield in place of Paulo Nagamura, and Graham Zusi started out wide for Jacob Peterson.
SPORTING KANSAS CITY (4-1-2-3): Tim Melia - Chance Myers (Saad Abdul-Salaam 79), Kevin Ellis, Matt Besler, Amadou Dia - Soni Mustivar - Benny Feilhaber, Roger Espinoza (Paulo Nagamura 90) - Graham Zusi (Jacob Peterson 90), Dom Dwyer, Krisztian Nemeth.
TEAM NEWS Sporting failed to win for a second consecutive game for the first time since April 25, when they completed a
three-game winless run. They still have yet to lose back-to-back games this year. “It wasn't a good game for either team. It was a very scrappy game, back and forth. We sure did give a lot of
chances away. We created some good ones, but not enough. Both teams were just scrappy,” said Sporting manager Peter Vermes.
MLS GAME INFORMATION
Dom Dwyer scored his seventh goal of the season, his second in three games in league play. He has eight goals over Sporting’s last eight games in all competitions.
“Obviously we are a little bit frustrated. It wasn't the result we wanted. We wanted to get three points. We'll take the positives out of it, get the point and move on to the next one,” Dwyer said.
Benny Feilhaber collected his 11th assist of the season, adding to his single-season career-high, now in a three-way tie for second place on the MLS assist leaderboard. Feilhaber has seven goals and seven assists over the last 13 league games, dating back to April 25.
The SKC goal came from a free kick, the first goal they’ve scored from a set-piece situation in league play since May 29. Sporting has scored six goals from deadball situations this season, part of a four-way tie for sixth-most in MLS this season.
With the free kick goal allowed to the Dynamo, SKC have now conceded seven goals on set pieces this season – in a five-way tie for most in the league.
“I hate giving up any set pieces in any game. But we scored a great one. I thought we were dangerous in and around the box many times,” Vermes said.
Chance Myers came into the back four for his second league start of the season, his first since June 27. Kevin Ellis and Amadou Dia also returned after a one-match absence.
After making his first start in more than two months in MLS, Paulo Nagamura came off the substitutes’ bench, in place of Roger Espinoza – who was later diagnosed to have suffered a fractured sesamoid in his left foot, which will put him out of action for up to 10 weeks.
