CHIVAS USA Chivas USA had their winless streak extended to nine matches, falling 3-0 to the Columbus Crew on Sunday afternoon at Crew Stadium. Chivas USA sit in ninth place in the Western Conference with 24 points from 27 games. LAST MATCH
The Crew were given a glorious opportunity in the 45th minute when forward Aaron Schoenfeld was tripped up by Eriq Zavaleta in the box on a corner kick. Referee Geoff Gamble awarded the penalty kick, but Federico Higuain slammed the shot into the bar for his third penalty miss of the season.
The Crew finally broke through seven minutes into the second half. Justin Meram collected the ball on the left side, just outside the box, cut inside onto his favored right foot and curled a feathery shot around a defender and past Chivas USA 'keeper Dan Kennedy.
Less than ten minutes later, Meram put the match away with another blast into the corner. He scooped up a loose ball in the middle of the field to go one-on-one with Kennedy and left no doubt, cooly slotting a right-footed shot into the corner of the Chivas USA goal.
The Crew added an insurance goal in the 80th minute, when substitute Hector Jimenez found another substitute in Bernardo Anor with a perfectly placed cross that Anor headed home.
Chivas USA head coach Wilmer Cabrera made three changes to the team that fell 4-2 to Seattle Sounders FC at StubHub Center. Eriq Zavaleta and Andrew Jean-Baptiste came back into central defense for Jhon Kennedy Hurtado and Bobby Burling, and Agustin Pelletieri started in midfield for Oswaldo Minda.
CHIVAS USA (4-4-2): Dan Kennedy - Akira Kaji, Eriq Zavaleta, Andrew Jean-Baptiste, Tony Lochhead - Marky Delgado, Agustin Pelletieri (Nathan Sturgis 76), Nigel Reo-Coker, Eric Avila (Luis Bolanos 63) - Felix Borja, Ryan Finley (Marvin Chavez 53).
MLS GAME INFORMATION
TEAM NEWS The defeat in Columbus extended the Chivas USA winless streak to nine games, matching the longest in MLS
this season, and Chivas USA’s longest since a 13-game without a victory last season. It is the fourth-longest winless run in club history.
“We knew that it was going to be a tough game for us after the third game in one week ... I think the guys, suffered in the second half. The first half as tough, we played even, we controlled the attacking from the Crew very well, but in the second half we had guys running around, we paid the price and we gave them too much of a threat,” said Chivas USA head coach Wilmer Cabrera. “We tried to take risks and when you try to take risks, you have to be able to deal with crisis in the back and we didn’t have very good answers in terms of attack.”
It was also Chivas USA’s seventh attacking shutout in the last eight games, and their 11th offensive shutout of the season. The MLS record is 17 shutouts in a year, set by D.C. United in 2010.
“I think in the first half we really had good shape and gave ourselves a real chance and we got on the ball and had some composure,” said goalkeeper Dan Kennedy. “Unfortunately, you know we gave up that first goal and then we were chasing the game. When you chase a game, you kind of leave yourselves a little exposed and we gave up another couple of goals. ... Unfortunately for us, if we could’ve just kept that first goal out you never know what could’ve happened.”
Chivas USA conceded three or more goals for a third consecutive match, with 10 goals allowed over that span. Chivas USA have allowed three or more goals on nine occasions this season; they have allowed the third-most goals in MLS this season (47, one less than Houston and Montréal entering the week).
“We have to be more consistent with our defending. We gave up two goals in the same way. In the second half, we lost the ball in transition; we lost the ball in the middle. For the two goals that came outside of the box, we have to step up better we have to do a better job in that aspect because that is something that cannot happen,” said Cabrera. “The same player scored the same type of goals in less than 10 minutes. Obviously, if we want to get a result at home, we have to be a threat. We have to have better ideas and have to have a better mentality. The possession has to happen for this.”
Ryan Finley started for a second consecutive match, alongside Felix Borja in the Chivas USA. Erick Torres will be suspended for both the Sporting KC match and the Toronto FC game on Sept. 21, serving his two-match suspension following his return from the Mexican national team.
“Hopefully, we can keep possession a little bit better [vs. Sporting KC] and be able to create some more opportunities,” said Ryan Finley. “I thought we were pretty solid at the back in the first half, it’s just kind of the mistakes of us losing the ball in bad spots and them taking advantage of it.”
Eriq Zavaleta returned to the Chivas USA backline for the first time since Aug. 9, playing the full 90 minutes in central defense.
SPORTING KANSAS CITY Sporting Kansas City had their losing slide extended to four matches, completing an Eastern road swing with a 2-1 loss to the New York Red Bulls on Saturday evening at Red Bull Arena. Sporting are in second place in the Eastern Conference with 42 points from 27 games. LAST MATCH
The Red Bulls took an early lead, after Sporting center back Matt Besler clipped Bradley Wright-Phillips with a sliding tackle, and referee Hilario Grajeda pointed to the spot. Wright-Phillips scored his league-leading 21st goal, firing an unstoppable shot to the left past goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum for an 11th-minute lead.
The Red Bulls doubled the margin seven minutes into the second half. Taking a pass just outside the area on the left, Henry took advantage of some space at the top of the penalty area and thundered a shot into the far top corner past the full-stretch dive of Gruenebaum.
Sporting pulled a goal two minutes later when Seth Sinovic whipped a ball in from the right flank that found Graham Zusi, who headed the ball across goal for Dwyer to scissor-kick home with an impressive side volley.
Sporting manager Peter Vermes made five changes to the team that suffered a 3-1 loss to the New England Revolution at Gillette Stadium. Aurelien Collin came back into central defense, Paulo Nagamura and Benny Feilhaber started in midfield, and Antonio Dovale and Dom Dwyer came in up top, with Jorge Claros, Mikey Lopez, C.J. Sapong, Soony Saad and Claudio Bieler all out of the team.
SPORTING KANSAS CITY (4-1-2-3): Andy Gruenebaum - Igor Juliao, Aurelien Collin, Matt Besler, Seth Sinovic - Lawrence Olum (Jorge Claros 70) - Paulo Nagamura (C.J. Sapong 85), Benny Feilhaber - Antonio Dovale (Sal Zizzo 58), Dom Dwyer, Graham Zusi.
TEAM NEWS Sporting Kansas City lost their fourth consecutive game in the defeat at New York – their longest losing streak
since Aug. 1-29, 2009. It was also a third consecutive defeat away from home. “You’ve got to understand that the whole season we’ve been in first or second place, the whole entire season
with massive amounts of injuries, guys away on international duty, we’ve kept ourselves in the mix. In this league, you always run into a rough patch somewhere,” said SKC manager Peter Vermes. “The question is
MLS GAME INFORMATION
when do you come out of it and when you do, how is your upswing? I have all the confidence in the world [with] where we’re at. I really do.”
Sporting allowed multiple goals in a game for the fourth consecutive contest. They had allowed more than one goal in a game just once in the previous 12 league matches, dating back to May 23.
“We've always taken pride in defending,” Vermes said. “It's not just one guy. It's every guy on every roll of the ball. From that perspective, that's always going to be high on our priority list every time we step inside the white lines. [Saturday], it wasn't really pride – it was more of a situation where we got back to playing the way we do.”
Dom Dwyer equaled the Kansas City club record with his 18th goal of the season, his second in the last three games. He matched the mark set by Preki 19 years ago, in the club’s inaugural season of 1996 when they were known as the Kansas City Wiz.
Graham Zusi recorded his second assist in the last five matches, now with six assists on the year. He has two goals and two assists since his return from the FIFA World Cup.
“We actually made a good step in the right direction. We played real well. We played more like us than we have in the past. We’ve had a couple performances prior to this that weren’t good at all and there [was] a lot of things that weren’t good about it but tonight we played more like us,” Vermes said. “I think we drove the game. We outshot them, 17-5, and every category we [had] more, except the two goals. We created [a lot] of chances. From that perspective, it was very good.”
After being dropped from the team for the New England match, Aurelien Collin returned to central defense alongside Matt Besler, who played despite having a broken bone in his right hand suffered in the New England match.
Paulo Nagamura made his first appearance since July 6, having missed the last 10 league matches through injury. Nagamura played 85 minutes in his usual midfield role.
Antonio Dovale made his first start since Aug. 1, coming into a wide attacking role and playing 58 minutes. He had made one substitute appearance, totaling 11 minutes, over the previous five matches.

Chivas USA vs. Sporting KC – MLS Week 27Friday, Sept. 12, 2014 – StubHub Center; Carson, Calif. – 7:30 p.m. (PT)Local TV: Time Warner Cable Deportes / Local Radio: ESPN Deportes Radio KWKU 1220 AM
Chivas USA fell, 3-0, to the Columbus Crew last Sunday at Crew Stadium.Columbus’ Justin Meram led the Eastern Conference side’s attack with a second-half brace and Bernardo Anor tallied the third score to finish off the shutout.
The Red-and-White looked to get on the front foot in the first half and tried to putforwards Felix Borja and Ryan Finley into the box early on. In the 22nd minute,Borja set up Nigel Reo-Coker in transition and played the midfielder a short pass tothe right of the arc. Reo-Coker then fired on frame but was unable to capitalize onthe chance when his shot was deflected, allowing Columbus goalkeeper SteveClark to secure the threat.
The Crew had a golden chance at taking the advantage after being awarded apenalty in the final minute of the half on the end of a corner kick. As the ball wasplayed in from the right side into the mixer, the referee signaled for the maximumpenalty. Yet Columbus’ Federico Higuain could not convert, as he sent his shotcrashing off the crossbar.
Columbus opened the scoring in the 52nd minute when Waylon Francis set upMeram on the left wing with space. The forward then pushed the ball to the edge ofthe 18-yard box and curled his right-footed shot inside the far post to put his sideup 1-0.
In the 58th minute, Chivas forward Marvin Chavez nearly leveled the match fiveminutes after coming on as a sub. Chavez squared up to his marker on the rightside of the box, created space to his left and fired a left-footed bender just wide ofthe second post.
Instead, the Crew doubled the advantage to 2-0 a minute later when Meram placedhis strike inside the right post from the arc after capitalizing on a turnover. Thehome side would go on to add a third goal in the 80th minute when Hector Jimenezlinked up with Anor with a cross sent to the back post for a scoring header to capoff the three-point result.

Dwyer ties Sporting KC’s single season scoring record
Forward Dom Dwyer moved atop Sporting KC’s all-time single-season scoring chart on Sept. 6, notching his 18th goal of the campaign in a 2-1 defeat at the New York Red Bulls. Dwyer’s 54th-minute strike tied him with Preki, whose 18-goal haul in the inaugural 1996 season was unmatched for nearly 18 years.
Making his 50th MLS appearance, Dwyer was on the mark following a free kick from Graham Zusi. Seth Sinovic won the header at the back post to set up Dwyer, who side-volleyed his shot from the top of the six-yard box.
Dwyer is second in the MLS Golden Boot race, trailing New York’s Bradley Wright-Phillips (21 goals) with six games remaining in the regular season. A 2014 MLS All-Star, Dwyer leads MLS with five multi-goal games (tied for third most in club history all-time) and leads all players with 13 left-footed goals and three headed goals. The 24-year-old has appeared in a team-high 27 League matches this season.
All five of Dwyer’s multi-goal games have come against Canadian opposition (three vs. Montreal, two vs. Toronto). Only six MLS players have recorded more multi-goal games in a season over the League’s 19-year history. Furthermore, the Englishman’s six successful penalties in 2014 are now second most in team history and fourth most in a single-season by an MLS player all-time. Alongside teammates C.J. Sapong and Graham Zusi, Dwyer is tied for ninth on the club’s career goal scoring chart.
The teams last met in the regular season on May 5, 2013 at Sporting Park. A brace from Claudio Bieler powered Sporting KC to a 4-0 victory, equaling their highest goal tally in an MLS match since 2004.
Bieler opened the scoring on the stroke of halftime, rounding keeper Dan Kennedy after receiving a through ball from Graham Zusi. The Argentinian struck again from the penalty spot in the 57th minute, before Zusi and C.J. Sapong added late insurance goals for the eventual MLS Cup champions.
Friday is the only meeting between the sides this season. Sporting KC leads the all-time series 8-4-4 and is 3-3-2 against Chivas USA at the StubHub Center.
• C.J. Sapong has three goals in three starts against Chivas USA all-time.
• Paulo Nagamura played for Chivas USA form 2007-2011, making 105 appearances with nine goals and eight assists (including postseason).
• Benny Feilhaber and Carlos Bocanegra played for the United States at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
• Claudio Bieler and Luis Bolanos were teammates at Ecuadorian club LDU Quito in 2008 when the club won Copa Libertadores, the most prestigious club competition in South American soccer.
• Claudio Bieler and Agustin Pelletieri were teammates at Argentine club Racing from 2011-2012.
• Jorge Claros (52 caps) and Marvin Chavez (42 caps) have been teammates on the Honduras Men’s National Team since 2006.

Injuries and international duty test Sporting KC’s depth
Through 28 games in the 2014 MLS regular season, Sporting KC has featured 27 different starting lineups. Peter Vermes’ lineup selection has been complicated by several factors throughout the year. In March, the club had to balance multiple competitions during the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals. In May, schedule congestion came to the forefront with seven MLS games during the month. More recently, goalkeepers Eric Kronberg and Andy Gruenebaum suffered injuries, giving Jon Kempin his first career MLS start.
To complicate matters, Chance Myers and Ike Opara have suffered season-ending injuries; Matt Besler, Graham Zusi and Lawrence Olum have seen extended international action; and Erik Palmer-Brown, Aurelien Collin, Dom Dwyer and Benny Feilhaber have served one-game suspensions.
As a result, 30 different players have started an MLS match for the club this season, a team record and most in the League. Of those 30 players, 12 were 23 years of age or younger at the start of the season. The club’s defense has been stretched most of all, with eight different players featuring in the centerback position during the 2014 campaign. Overall, 30 players have appeared for the club in an MLS match this year, tied for most in 2014 with Chivas USA.
Paying the penalty
Sporting KC has conceded seven penalty kicks through 28 matches this year, tied for most in the club’s single-season history. This follows a League-wide trend, as referees have frequently pointed to the spot in 2014. As of Sept. 9, 110 penalty kicks have been awarded through 252 games (0.44 per game). The whole 2013 regular season had 81 penalties (0.25 per game), while the 2012 campaign had 72 penalties (0.22 per game).
Spot on for Sporting KC
Dom Dwyer’s six consecutive penalty kick conversions in 2014 continues a recent trend for the MLS champions from the penalty spot. The club has now scored on 13 straight attempts dating back to 2012 -- the longest active streak in MLS -- and has proven successful on 26 of their last 27 penalty kicks dating back to 2007. In addition, the club secured the 2012 U.S. Open Cup and 2013 MLS Cup in penalty shootout wins.
Palmer-Brown features for U.S. U-20 Men’s National Team in Argentina
Sporting KC homegrown defender Erik Palmer-Brown joined United States Under-20 Men’s National team for a training camp and three friendly matches in Buenos Aires, Argentina from Sept. 1-10.
Palmer-Brown started in central defense for all three friendlies—a 2-0 win against Racing Club Reserves (Sept. 4), a 3-2 victory over Defensa y Justicia Reserves (Sept. 6) and a 1-1 stalemate with the Argentina U-20 National Team (Sept. 9).
Palmer-Brown signed a homegrown player contract with Sporting KC in August 2013 and has logged five appearances for the club in all competitions this season. The Lee’s Summit, Missouri native made his professional debut in May, becoming the youngest player in MLS history to start a regular season match as a defender, for the first of three MLS games played to date. He also appeared in the 2014 Chipotle MLS Homegrown Game and this summer’s Champions Shield against Manchester City.
Sporting Park sellout streak
Sporting Park has sold out 50 straight MLS matches, including four playoff games. Since opening in June 2011, the venue has sold out 63 of 71 MLS games and averaged 19,334 spectators, 104.7 percent of its 18,467 capacity.
Through 14 MLS matches of the 2014 home campaign, Sporting Park’s average attendance is 20,172. The stadium’s 109.2 percent capacity this season ranks first in the League (excluding CenturyLink Field in Seattle, where official capacity is 38,500 but expands to 67,000 for select matches).
Sporting KC kicks off 2014-15 CONCACAF Champions League campaign
Sporting KC battled to a 1-1 draw against Real Esteli FC on Aug. 19 in their opening game of the 2014-15 CONCACAF Champions League at Estadio Independencia in Esteli, Nicaragua. The defending MLS Cup champions will now return home for back-to-back CCL matches at Sporting Park, hosting Saprissa on Thursday, Sept. 18 and Esteli on Tuesday, Sept. 23. Both matches will kick off at 7 p.m. CT. Sporting KC will conclude the group stage on Thursday, Oct. 23 at Saprissa.
Esteli and Saprissa kicked off Group 2 action on Aug. 6, battling to a 1-1 draw in Nicaragua. Saprissa then defeated Esteli 3-0 in the return fixture on Aug. 26. The team with the most points at the conclusion of the CCL group stage will advance to the quarterfinal round in early 2015. Sporting KC advanced to the 2013-14 quarterfinals in March against Mexican club and eventual champion Cruz Azul, losing 5-2 on aggregate.
Deportivo Saprissa has won three CONCACAF Champions Cup titles (1993, 1995 and 2005) and won their 30th league title in May to become the most successful club in the history of the Costa Rican Primera Division. Real Esteli, the defending Clausura and Apertura champions in their domestic league, are the only Nicaraguan side to have participated in the competition and have qualified every year since the 2008-09 edition.
Sporting KC’s USL PRO affiliates end regular season
USL PRO affiliate OKC Energy FC concluded their inaugural season on Sept. 6, knocking off the Orange County Blues 1-0. Former Sporting KC captain Jimmy Nielsen ended his first year as head coach with a 9-14-5 record (32 points) as 10th place OKC fell five points short of the eighth and final playoff spot.
Five Sporting KC players -- Duke, Kevin Ellis, Jimmy Medranda, Jon Kempin and Mikey Lopez -- saw action for OKC in 2014. Lopez led the group in total appearances (14) and was the lone goal scorer. He was also the only player to also feature for Orlando City SC. Duke accumulated the most assists (three) and minutes played (912).
Orlando City SC, meanwhile, lifted their third USL PRO Commissioners Cup in four seasons, ending the regular season at 19-4-5 (62 points), seven points clear of second place Sacramento Republic FC. The affiliate club begins their defense of the USL PRO crown when they host the Harrisburg City Islanders in this Saturday’s quarterfinal round.
Next year, Orlando City will become Major League Soccer’s 21st franchise and the first located in the state of Florida since the Miami Fusion and Tampa Bay Mutiny folded in 2001.

Besler and Zusi sign Designated Player contracts with Sporting KC
Sporting KC signed defender Matt Besler and midfielder Graham Zusi to long-term Designated Player contracts on July 19.
An Overland Park native, Besler became the first player from the state of Kansas to play in a FIFA World Cup when he started all four matches for the United States in Brazil this summer. The 27-year-old centerback debuted for the U.S. in January 2013 and has 21 career international appearances, including all three knockout round games en route to the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup title.
Besler was named captain of the reigning MLS Cup champions prior to the 2014 season and was recognized as the Kansas City Sports Commission Sportsman of the Year in April. Besler has made 155 MLS appearances (including postseason) with two goals and seven assists since being drafted by Kansas City in the first round of the 2009 MLS SuperDraft out of Notre Dame.
Zusi is also coming off a strong performance at the 2014 FIFA World Cup. He appeared in all four games for head coach Jurgen Klinsmann and contributed assists in back-to-back group stage games against Ghana and Portugal. The 28-year-old has earned 27 career international appearances with three goals and six assists.
Taken in the second round of the 2009 MLS SuperDraft as a two-time national champion at the University of Maryland, Zusi has recorded 20 goals and 42 assists in 153 MLS matches (including postseason) over six professional seasons with Sporting KC.
