SEATTLE SOUNDERS FC vs PORTLAND TIMBERS CENTURYLINK FIELD, Seattle, Wash.
March 16, 2013 (WEEK 3, MLS Game #24) 5 p.m. PT (NBC SN) MLS Rivalry Week will reach a pitched fever on Saturday afternoon with Seattle Sounders FC meet the Portland Timbers in the latest installment of their Cascadia Cup rivalry at CenturyLink Field. The clubs have been rivals since the mid-70s. Sounders FC return to league action after reaching the CONCACAF Champions League semifinals, looking for a first league win after a 1-0 season-opening loss to Montréal. The Timbers are looking for a first victory under rookie head coach Caleb Porter, coming off a 2-1 home loss to that same Montréal team last weekend. REFEREE: Kevin Stott. Sounders FC defeated their Pacific Northwest rivals for the first time ever at home in MLS play with a 3-0 victory last Oct. 7 at CenturyLink Field. In the first meeting a year ago, the Timbers defeated Seattle in MLS play for the first time, a 2-1 win at Jeld-Wen Field on June 24.
The clubs have a long history against each other, dating back to the North American Soccer League, when the Timbers played their first ever game against Seattle on May 2, 1975. In more recent times, the teams met in back-to-back years in the U.S. Open Cup, with the MLS Sounders defeating the D-II Timbers in both 2009 and 2010.
Versions of the club have faced one another in the NASL, Western Soccer League, APSL/A-League/USL First Division and now MLS. Overall, the clubs have met 78 times in official competitions, Seattle winning 41 times, Portland winning 28, and 9 draws.

The only goal came after 35 minutes. Felipe chipped the ball over a pair of defenders for Davy Arnaud to run onto, and from just outside the area he floated a half-volley over Seattle goalkeeper Michael Gspurning after he wandered a bit too far off his line.
Homegrown Player DeAndre Yedlin was a surprise starter at right back, and Mario Martinez was given the start wide in the midfield with Mauro Rosales stepping into an attacking role.
SEATTLE SOUNDERS FC (4-1-3-2): Michael Gspurning - DeAndre Yedlin, Zach Scott, Jhon Kennedy Hurtado, Leo Gonzalez (Servando Carrasco 84) - Andy Rose (Alex Caskey 62) - Mario Martinez, Brad Evans, Steve Zakuani (Sammy Ochoa 69) - Mauro Rosales, Eddie Johnson.
TEAM NEWS In the league opener, Homegrown Player DeAndre Yedlin was a surprise starter at right back. “I thought he
played well,” said Sounders FC head coach Sigi Schmid. I thought for a young man making his debut at home there could have been a lot of pressure. He could have not handled that well, but I thought he handled it well, I thought he played well, and it thought he had a good game.”
MLS GAME INFORMATION
Schmid didn’t have Marc Burch available because of suspension. David Estrada was out with an ankle injury, and Lamar Neagle – acquired from Montréal in the offseason – could not play against his former team as conditions of the deal.
“Leo [Gonzalez] has been playing left back for us, so [Marc] Burch being out, it wouldn't have changed our lineup. [Pat] Ianni being injured, [Adam] Johansson being injured, Estrada being injured, Neagle not being available,” said Schmid. “Those definitely affected things in terms of our lineup and our lineup choices. This group has played together.”
With the choices, Mauro Rosales moved into an underneath striker role, below Eddie Johnson. “We didn't have a lot of options with guys being out injured, so those were the choices that we made. I don't think it was so much a matter of those choices,” said Schmid. “It was just a matter of maybe we thought because we had gone undefeated that it would just keep going, because we won the Desert [Diamond] Cup it would just keep going. We all got to look at it and say, 'Hey, we need to come out a little hungrier, a little sharper.’”
Following the league opener, Sounders FC reached the semifinals of the CONCACAF Champions League with a rare defeat of a Mexican club, defeating Tigres UANL 3-2 on aggregate.
In the first leg in Monterrey, Tigres scored the game’s only goal. Here’s the Sounders FC team: Michael Gspurning, Zach Scott (DeAndre Yedlin 81), Djimi Traore, Jhon Kennedy Hurtado, Leo Gonzalez, Alex Caskey, Osvaldo Alonso, Brad Evans, Mario Martinez (Marc Burch 89), Mauro Rosales (Lamar Neagle 68), Eddie Johnson.
Then in the second leg, Tigres took a first-half lead, but goals from DeAndre Yedlin, Djimi Traoré and Eddie Johnson sent Sounders FC into the semifinals. Seattle will take on Santos Laguna, which eliminated the Houston Dynamo. A year ago, Santos knocked Sounders FC out of the competition 6-2 on aggregate.
“I wasn’t too happy with how we played in the first half,” Schmid said. “I wasn’t too happy with some individual efforts which we sort of identified very directly. But we also said ‘this was how we’re going to play in the second half. This is what I need. I think you saw Steve Zakuani step up in the second half. Obviously DeAndre stepped up. ‘Three goals is very possible. Three goals is not impossible. We can score three goals, let’s go do it.’”
Here’s the Sounders FC team: Michael Gspurning, DeAndre Yedlin, Jhon Kennedy Hurtado, Djimi Traore, Leo Gonzalez, Mauro Rosales (Mario Martinez 54), Osvaldo Alonso, Brad Evans (Andy Rose 27), Steve Zakuani (Marc Burch 83), Sammy Ochoa, Eddie Johnson.
PORTLAND TIMBERS The Portland Timbers are still looking for a first victory under new coach Caleb Porter, the Montréal Impact claiming a 2-1 win on Saturday evening at Jeld-Wen Field. LAST MATCH
The Impact took the lead on the opening half-hour. Hassoun Camara tallied from a spectacular overhead kick after Portland had failed to clear their lines following a Montreal set piece.
The visitors then doubled their lead 30 minutes later. Patrice Bernier got loose in midfield before slotting substitute Andres Romero through. Romero pulled it back to Felipe at the edge of the six-yard box, and the Brazilian made no mistake in beating Ricketts to the near post.
The Timbers responded with a fury, aiming for their second comeback in two weeks. They got a breakthrough in the 80th minute when forward Ryan Johnson got goalside of Camara, heading in from close range, but could get no closer.
Timbers head coach Caleb Porter made no changes to the team that came back for a 3-3 draw with the New York Red Bulls at Jeld-Wen Field
PORTLAND TIMBERS (4-2-3-1): Donovan Ricketts - Ryan Miller (Jose Adolfo Valencia 68), Mikael Silvestre, Andrew Jean-Baptiste, Michael Harrington (Rodney Wallace 86) - Diego Chara, Will Johnson - Kalif Alhassan (Ben Zemanski 46), Diego Valeri, Darlington Nagbe - Ryan Johnson.
TEAM NEWS Against New York, the Timbers got off 21 attempts at goal. They put six on target against Montréal, but could
come away with only the single goal. “It’s not surprising we had as much of the ball as we did, we knew that would be the case,” Timbers head coach
Caleb Porter said. “I’m surprised we had [19] shots and only had one goal. And I’m disappointed we gave up two goals on [nine] shots. I’m disappointed they hit us basically the two ways we prepared for them to hit us. And we didn’t do a good enough job in managing those two things.”
Ryan Johnson scored his first goal with the club , acquired in the offseason after scoring seven goals with Toronto FC last year.
“As time goes on – it’s still early in the season and everyone is still getting accustomed to one another – we’ll be fine, I’m not worried about it,” Johnson said. “We just need to remember in the back of our minds that we’re doing the right things.”
After scoring the first goal of the season for the Timbers the week before, Diego Valeri did not put a single one of his six goal attempts on target against the Impact.
MLS GAME INFORMATION
“It’s not a coincidence that two games straight we’ve shot more than 20-something times on goal. I think these are club records that we are setting and it’s because we have offensive weapons,” said Ryan Johnson. “We’re doing the right things, they (shots) are going to fall, we’ve just got to be a little bit sharper around the goal when it comes to those final passes. As time goes on, we’ll be fine, I’m not worried at all.”
The Timbers have allowed five goals in their two matches, tied with New York and Chicago for the most in the league after two matches.
“We have to look at ourselves in the mirror and we need to correct some things,” Porter said. “Because we were good enough to win that game if we don’t make – again, I sound like a broken record these last couple weeks – but if we don’t make those critical mistakes that we’ve been making. It’s disappointing to dominate like we did and not get a result.”
Ben Zemanski made his first appearance of the season, coming on at halftime for Kalif Alhassan, and recorded his first assist.
“Whenever you have two home games to start the year and you only have one point, you’ve got to figure out a way to get a win,” Zemanski said. “Three points is huge in this league and there are a lot of games left for us to do it. We’ve got to get that first win.”

CATEGORICAL WON-LOST-TIED HEAD COACH CALEB PORTEROne of the most successful coaches in NCAA history, Caleb Porter was named the Timbers head coach on Aug. 29, 2012, and joins the club following seven seasons as the head coach at the University of Akron from 2006-12. He finished his time at Akron with a career mark of 123-18-17 and owned the highest winning percentage (0.832) among all active Division I coaches.
Porter built Akron men’s soccer into a perennial national championship contender, leading the Zips to five consecutive trips to the NCAA tournament’s Round of 16 (2008-12), back-to-back NCAA College Cup appearances in 2009 and 2010, and the school’s first national title in any sport in 2010. In all, he guided Akron to seven Mid-American Conference (MAC) regular-season champion-ships and five MAC Tournament titles. Porter set multiple NCAA records at Akron, including a 48-match, home unbeaten streak (44-0-4) from 2008-11 and a 47-match unbeaten streak (44-0-3) in conference play from 2006-12.
From Kalamazoo, Mich., Porter garnered numerous honors while at Akron, including NSCAA National Coach of the Year in 2009. He was a three-time NSCAA All-Ohio Coach of the Year (2008-09, 2011) and received MAC Coach of the Year honors six straight years from 2007-12. Porter became the fastest coach in program history to reach 100 career wins, accomplishing the feat in just 126 matches. He is also among the fastest all-time in NCAA history to the century mark, reaching the milestone in fewer games than collegiate Hall of Fame and current MLS coaches Bruce Arena (140; Virginia) and Sigi Schmid (136; UCLA). While at Akron, Porter recruited and developed more than a dozen Zips players who have gone on to professional careers, many plying their trade in Major League Soccer. He had an MLS-record five former players selected in the first round of the 2011 MLS SuperDraft and seven selected overall that year. Under Porter’s guidance, Portland’s Darlington Nagbe and former Akron standout Teal Bunbury were recipients of the MAC Hermann Trophy, awarded to the nation’s top col-legiate player.
Porter also served as the head coach of the U.S. U-23 Men’s National Team during 2012 CONCACAF Olympic qualifying and spent three years as an assistant coach on the U.S. U-18 National Team from 2009-11. Prior to joining Akron, Porter was an assistant coach for six years (2000-05) at Indiana Univer-sity, helping the school make six NCAA tournament appearances, win back-to-back national champion-ships in 2003 and 2004 and claim five Big Ten Conference titles.
As a player, Porter was the 27th overall pick by the San Jose Clash in the 1998 MLS College Draft. He spent time with San Jose and the Tampa Bay Mutiny before a knee injury ended his playing career in 2000. Porter also played for the U.S. National B Team from 1996-97, winning a bronze medal at the 1997 World University Games.
He had a successful collegiate playing career at Indiana, where he was a three-year captain, a three-time All-Big Ten honoree and a four-year letter winner. Porter led the Hoosiers to four conference titles, four NCAA tournament appearances – twice advancing to the College Cup. As a senior, Porter captained IU to 23 consecutive wins before losing to eventual national champion UCLA in the national semifinals and was the runner-up for the 1997 Hermann Trophy.
Porter graduated from Indiana in 1998 with a degree in sports management. He and his wife, Andrea, have three children – two sons, Colin and Jake, and a daughter, Stella Jane.
PORTLAND TIMBERS AT SEATTLE SOUNDERS FCSATURDAY, MARCH 16, 2013
MATCH DAY PREVIEWStill searching for their first win of the 2013 MLS season, the Timbers square off against Northwest rival Seattle Sounders FC in the first of six matches (split against Vancouver and Seattle) in deter-mining the winner of the 2013 Cascadia Cup. Portland, the Cascadia Cup winners in 2012, is 0-1-1 in Seattle as an MLS club and holds a 1-2-2 overall record against the Sounders since 2011.
Seattle has played one league match, while balancing its regular-season schedule with a two-legged quarterfinal series in the CONCACAF Champions League against UANL Tigres. On March 2, the Sounders fell victim to a dangerous Montreal counterattack and lost 1-0 at CenturyLink Field. Seattle twice hit the woodwork in the second half against Montreal, but the Impact held on for the season-opening win. The Sounders lost high-scoring striker Fredy Montero on loan to Colombian side Millonarios for the 2013 season, while also parting ways with Designated Player Christian Tiffert in the offseason. Head coach Sigi Schmid bolstered his club’s defense with the addition of Malian center back Djimi Traoré, who played for Liverpool from 1999 to 2006 as well as a stint in France with AS Monaco (2009-11) and Marseille (2011-12). Seattle also signed defender DeAndre Yedlin as a Homegrown Player. Yedlin played for Caleb Porter at Akron in 2011 and 2012.

ALL-TIME SERIES NOTES
One of North American soccer’s longest and most heated rivalries, the Pacific Northwest derby between the Timbers and Sounders dates back to the 1975 North American Soccer League (NASL) season, Portland’s first year as a profes-sional club. The two clubs first played each other on May 2, 1975, in Portland’s first match in the NASL, with the Sounders taking a 1-0 win in front of 8,131 fans at a rain-soaked Civic Stadium (now JELD-WEN Field) in Portland.
Saturday’s match marks the 80th all-time meeting between the clubs. The Timbers have registered an overall record of 28-41-10 all-time against Seattle and a record of 1-2-2 during the MLS era. The last regular-season matchup between the teams was on Oct. 7, 2012, in Seattle - a game which featured the second-largest stand-alone crowd in MLS history (66,452).
In the MLS era, the Timbers have displayed a penchant for striking either early (in the first 30 minutes) or late (in the final 30 minutes) against Seattle. In five matches to date, Portland has scored six goals with two coming in the game’s opening half-hour and four in the final 30 minutes of the match. Total shots between the two teams are even at 67-67, with Seattle holding an advantage in shots on goal (22-20) through five games.
According to Opta, following two weeks of the MLS season, the Timbers are ranked first in the league in shots (40), shots on goal (16) and total number of passes (1,122). Through the first two matches of the season, the Timbers have maintained 62.85 percent of the possession and also recorded a passing ac-curacy rate of 82.75 percent. Portland also leads the league with 44 open-play crosses.
LAST TIME VS. SEATTLEThe Timbers needed only a draw in the Pacific Northwest derby at Seattle to win the Cascadia Cup, but two first-half goals in quick succession handi-capped Portland for the rest of the match in front of a lively crowd of 66,452 at CenturyLink Field in Seattle. Seattle struck first in the 25th minute when Osvaldo Alonso put in a through ball that Christian Tiffert dummied, allowing it to roll to Adam Johansson. The Swede then crossed it toward Fredy Montero, but defender Futty Danso got his foot on the ball and poked it past goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts for an own goal in the 25th minute. Three minutes later Eddie Johnson beat Ricketts after a failed offsides trap to make the score 2-0 after 28 minutes. Montero added a third goal, knocking home a loose ball in the box in the 62nd minute.

Created in 2004, the Cascadia Cup is awarded to the Pacific Northwest club (Portland, Vancouver or Seattle) that earns the most points in regular-season play against the other teams.
Since its creation, each team has won the cup three times spanning the second-division and MLS eras. Portland, which has an MLS-era Cascadia Cup overall record of 5-2-3, lifted the trophy in 2009, 2010 and 2012.

RICKETTS UP FOR TWO SAVES OF THE WEEKTimbers goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts was nominated for two MLS Saves of the Week for Week 2 following a 2-1 loss against Montreal on March 9 at JELD-WEN Field. The Jamaican international’s quick reflexes in the 11th minute against Montreal helped him palm away a wide-open header attempt from Impact forward Marco Di Vaio, keeping the game scoreless in the early stages. Ricketts’ second nominated save is actually a double-save on the Impact’s Andrés Romero and Collen Warner in the 87th minute. Romero’s intial shot from a tight angle near the goal forced Ricketts into a save, causing a rebound to fall to Warner. The former University of Portland standout fired, but Ricketts was able to make a diving stop, keeping the Timbers in the match as the club searched for the equalizer.

AN UPWARD TRENDThrough 34 games during the 2012 MLS season, the Timbers registered more than 500 pass attempts twice - an accomplishment that this year’s squad has already equaled through the first two matches of this season. The 2012 Timbers recorded 512 pass attempts in a 2-1 home loss against Chivas USA on April 7, 2012, and 572 pass attempts in a 5-3 home loss against the LA Galaxy on July 14, 2012. The Timbers possessed the ball for 60.8 percent of the match against the Galaxy, the only time in 2012 when the club maintained more than 60 percent of possession. Portland attempted 553 and 569 passes in its first two matches of 2013, respectively. The Timbers also maintained 62.9 percent of the possession on March 3 against New York and 62.8 against Montreal.
SCOUTING THE SOUNDERSSeattle’s depth is being put to the test early in the season as the Sounders are forced to balance regular-season play with the knockout rounds of the CONCACAF Champions League. The Sounders dropped their season-opening match against Montreal as midfielder Davy Arnaud gave the Impact a 1-0 win at CenturyLink Field on March 2. Seattle then hopped on a flight to the suburbs of Monterrey, Mexico, for a CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal first-leg match against UANL Tigres of Liga MX, the Mexican first division, on March 6. The Sounders kept the dominant home side at bay for 74 minutes before Alan Pulido pounced on a rebound in the box to give Tigres a 1-0 win. In Tuesday’s second-leg in Seattle went down a goal in the first half (2-0 on aggregate) before scoring three goals in the second half for a 3-1 win (3-2 aggregate) and advancing to the semifinal round. Tigres played the entire second half down a man after a red card in the 45th minute.

HITTING THE ROAD
LEAGUE LEADERSTimbers midfielder and Designated Player Diego Valeri leads the league in shots (12) and is tied for the league-lead in corner kicks (11) through two matches. Valeri scored his first career goal for the Timbers, a strike that was voted the MLSsoccer.com Goal of the Week for Week 1, on March 3 in a 3-3 draw against the New York Red Bulls. Timbers forward Ryan Johnson, who scored his first goal for Portland in the 80th minute of a 2-1 loss against Montreal on March 9, ranks second in the league with four shots on goal, one shy of LA’s Mike Magee for the league lead.
UPCOMING MILESTONESTimbers goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts, a Jamaican international, is three wins shy of his 50th career win in MLS. Coming to Portland in a trade with Montreal on Aug. 7, 2012, Ricketts currently ranks 16th all-time among MLS goalkeepers in wins.
Third-year midfielder/forward Darlington Nagbe’s next goal will be the 10th of his MLS career. It would also put Nagbe into a tie with Jack Jewsbury as the club’s all-time career goal-scoring leader. Nagbe scored his ninth career goal with a rebound in the 56th minute against New York on March 3.
Nagbe also has the chance during Saturday’s game to claim the club’s all-time career lead in shots on goal. Currently, Nagbe has 29 career shots on goal, one shy of the club record on 30 held by both Jack Jewsbury and Kenny Cooper.
Team captain Will Johnson’s next assist will be the 10th of his career. Johnson earned the second assist on midfielder Diego Valeri’s first career goal in a 3-3 draw with New York on March 3. The seven-year MLS veteran has registered an assist in each of his last five seasons.
NAGBE EARNS HONORABLE MENTIONTimbers midfielder Darlington Nagbe earned an honorable mention nod for MLSsoccer.com’s Team of the Week for Week 2 following his performance against Montreal in a 2-1 loss on March 9. Nagbe, who was selected to the MLSsoccer.com Team of the Week for Week 1 after scoring in a 3-3 draw against New York, recorded three shots, including one on goal against the Impact.
TIMBERS FALL 1-0 TO MONTREALOn March 9, forward Ryan Johnson scored his first goal of the season in the 80th minute, but the Portland Timbers attempt at a second-half comeback for a second straight match fell just short in a 2-1 loss to the Montreal Impact before 20,674 fans at a sold-out JELD-WEN Field. Trailing at halftime, the Timbers assembled a second-half performance that saw them out-shoot Montreal 11-4 and maintain nearly 65 percent of the possession, which helped them claw back into the match. Portland was able to pull one back late on Johnson’s strike, one of the club’s nine shots over the final 30 minutes of the match. But Montreal was able to make a 60th-minute goal by midfielder Felipe stand as the game-winner to capture a second straight road win.
OPEN AND PHYSICALTimbers matches against Cascadia Cup rivals Seattle and Vancouver have frequently featured loads of offense and lots of fouls. Among teams Portland has faced five or more times in regular-season play, the Timbers average 13.4 shots per game (67 total) against the Sounders and 11.8 shots per game against Vancouver. Only against Chivas USA have the Timbers attempted more total shots (71). Portland has recorded an average of 1.4 goals per game against the Whitecaps and 1.2 goals per game against Seattle. Combined, Portland/Seattle matches average 24 fouls, while only Vancouver features more with 26.8 fouls.
Saturday’s match in Seattle marks the Timbers first away match of the 2013 MLS season and is one of five multi-game road swings this season. Portland has back-to-back road games on March 16 (at Seattle) and March 30 (at Colorado) before returning home for a match against Houston on April 6. For the first time since the 2011 season, the Timbers schedule features a three-game road stretch from May 18 to June 8 (May 18 at Vancouver, May 25 at D.C. United, June 8 at Chicago). The 2012 schedule featured five back-to-back road matches, while the inaugural season was highlighted by two three-game road swings - the first three games of the season (as JELD-WEN Field renovations were being completed) and Aug. 6-17.
TIMBERS RESERVES START PLAY
The Timbers Reserves begin play in the MLS Reserve League at 5 p.m. (Pacific) on Sunday, March 17, against the Seattle Sounders FC Reserves at Starfire Sports Complex in Tukwila, Wash. Last year, the Timbers Reserves compiled an overall record of 4-5-1 and closed out the season on Sept. 16 with a thrilling 3-2 victory against the Sounders FC Reserves in front of 8,968 fans at JELD-WEN Field.
WAITING ON THE CALLThe Timbers have gone a club record stretch of 36 matches without receiving a penalty kick (3,274 minutes since the team’s last penalty kick attempt). Portland was last awarded a shot from the penalty spot during the 2011 season finale against Real Salt Lake on Oct. 22, 2011, at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah. Jack Jewsbury’s 56th-minute attempt went over the crossbar, but the Timbers were able to steal a point at the end with a stoppage-time equalized from defender Futty Danso. Since the Timbers last penalty attempt, 76 penalty kicks have been awarded in league play. According to Elias Sports Bureau, the team’s 36-game stretch without a penalty kick ranks fifth all-time in MLS history. Chivas USA leads the record books with a 54-game streak between August 2010 and April 2012.
SOCCER CITY, USAThe consecutive sellout streak at JELD-WEN Field is one thing, but the Timbers run of a 97-percent season-ticket renewal rate in back-to-back years is equally as notable. The club currently has a Season Ticket Waiting List of more than 6,500 fans and even increased the season-ticket allotment by 500 during the offseason, raising the total number of season tickets to 15,250.
