CATEGORICAL WON-LOST-TIED HEAD COACH CALEB PORTERHead coach
Caleb Porter enters his third season with the club in 2015 after
guiding the Portland Timbers to record-setting campaigns in his
first two years in MLS. Guiding the team to an impressive
turnaround season and the clubs first-ever MLS postseason
appearance in 2013, Porter helped direct a record-setting offense
in 2014 as the Timbers netted 61 regular-season goals, a club
record across all eras.
He was announced as the Timbers head coach on Aug. 29, 2012, and
joined the club ahead of the 2013 MLS campaign. Porter received the
Slats Gill Award for Sportsperson of the Year at the Oregon Sports
Awards on March 9, 2014, becoming the fourth soccer-related figure
to receive the award since it was founded in 1957. On Aug. 6, 2014,
Porter helped guide the MLS All-Stars to a 2-1 win over German
power Bayern Munich in the 2014 AT&T MLS All-Star Game at
Providence Park in Portland.
The 2013 MLS Coach of the Year award winner, Porter has compiled
one of the leagues top winning percentages among active MLS head
coaches with a 26-14-28 mark (.588) after leading Portland to
double-digits wins in each of his first two seasons. Under Porters
guidance, the Timbers have made Providence Park one of the toughest
places to play in the league, registering an impressive
regular-season mark of 16-4-14 at Providence Park over the last
two-plus seasons. In 2014, the Timbers netted a team-record 61
goals while compiling one of the highest point totals (44) across
the final two-thirds of the regular season recording the highest
goal differential (plus-9) of any non-playoff team in MLS history.
Portland also made its first appearance in CONCACAF Champions
League, contesting matches against Alpha United of Guyana and C.D.
Olimpia of Honduras during the competitions group stage.
During Porters first season as head coach in 2013, the Timbers
assembled one of the biggest turna-round seasons in MLS. In
comparison to 2012 totals, the Timbers assembled a 23-point
improvement in points and an MLS-record 43-goal improvement in goal
differential. Portlands five losses during the 2013 regular season
tied for the fewest in MLS history in a 34-game season and the
Timbers led the league with 15 shutouts. The Timbers recorded a
15-game, home unbeaten streak during the 2013 regular season,
posting a league-best 11-1-5 home record at Providence Park and an
MLS single-season record 11 home shutouts. In 2013, Portland
qualified for the MLS Cup Playoffs for the first time since joining
the league in 2011. Additionally, the Timbers made their deepest
run in club history in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in 2013 under
Porters guidance, reaching the semifinals of the tournament.
Prior to joining the Timbers, Porter was one of the most
successful coaches in NCAA history during his tenure as head coach
at the University of Akron (2006-12). He compiled a career mark of
123-18-17 and was named 2009 NSCAA National Coach of the Year.
Porter led the Zips to back-to-back NCAA Col-lege Cup appearances
(2009, 2010) and the schools first national title in any sport in
2010.
Porters coaching career also includes time as the head coach of
the U.S. U-23 Mens National Team during 2012 CONCACAF Olympic
qualifying and three years as an assistant coach on the U.S. U-18
National Team (2009-11). Porter was an assistant coach for six
years (2000-05) at Indiana University.
As a player, Porter was the 27th overall pick by the San Jose
Clash in the 1998 MLS College Draft. He spent time with San Jose
and the Tampa Bay Mutiny before a knee injury ended his
professional play-ing career in 2000. He also played for the U.S.
National B Team from 1996-97, winning a bronze medal at the 1997
World University Games. As a player at Indiana, he was a three-year
captain and led the Hoosiers to four conference titles. Porter was
the runner-up for the 1997 Hermann Trophy.
Porter graduated from Indiana in 1998 with a degree in sports
management. He and his wife, Andrea, have three children two sons,
Colin and Jake, and a daughter, Stella.ment appearances. As a
senior, Porter captained IU to 23 consecutive wins before losing to
eventual national champion UCLA in the national semifinals and was
the runner-up for the 1997 Hermann Trophy.

1-1-0 at Providence Park against the Dynamo and have lost just once
in the last four games overall against Houston.
Houston makes its first trip to Portland since the 2013 season
on Saturday, a span of 805 days between visits to the Rose City for
the new Western Confer-ence club. The two sides have already met
once this season, with the Timbers falling 3-1 on the road after
two late goals provided the Dynamo with the win at BBVA Compass
Stadium on May 16.
In their most recent match at Providence Park, the Timbers
registered two goals in the second half for a 2-0 shutout against
Houston on April 6, 2013.

LAST TIME VS. HOUSTON
Despite overcoming an early deficit on the road, the Timbers
couldnt overcome a late second-half surge by the Dynamo, conceding
two goals inside the final 15 minutes in a 3-1 loss at BBVA Compass
Stadium on May 16. After conceding the opening goal to Houston
forward Will Bruin on a header off a free kick in the ninth minute,
the Timbers did well to kick off the second half strong captur-ing
the equalizer in the 48th minute. Picking up a loose ball,
midfielder Diego Valeri delivered a through ball into the right
side of the penalty box for forward Fanendo Adi, who shouldered
Dynamo defender DaMarcus Beasley out of his path and fired the
game-tying goal past goalkeeper Tyler Deric. However, Bruin and
Giles Barnes netted goals in the final 15 minutes to give Houston
the win.

HOUSTON DYNAMO AT PORTLAND TIMBERSSATURDAY, JUNE 20, 2015
SCOUTING THE DYNAMOHouston enters Saturdays match following a
2-0 win over USL side Austin Aztex on Wednesday in the fourth round
of the 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Head coach Owen Coyle sat
many of his regular first-team players against the Aztex as Leonel
Miranda and late substitute Ricardo Clark each scored in the
shutout win at BBVA Compass Stadium. In regular-season play, the
Dynamo earned a 4-2 victory over the New York Red Bulls on June 5
at BBVA Compass Stadium. Coyles side is 1-2-3 overall on the road
this season, including con-secutive winless matches against New
York City FC (May 30) and the LA Galaxy (May 22). Houston is led by
forward Will Bruin with seven goals in 14 appear-ance, while
forward Giles Barnes has registered six goals and one assist.
PUSHING THROUGH THE FOULS
Portland ranks first overall in the league in dribbles completed
(131). The stat tracks moments when an individual player
successfully dribbles around an opponent while retaining
possession. Portlands mark is 17 more than the next-best team.
Midfielder Darlington Nagbe (42) and defender Alvas Powell (33)
rank second and fourth, respectively, in the league. Highlighting
the stat is the fact that the Timbers are the second-most fouled
team in MLS (223), while Nagbe is the most-fouled player in MLS
(45).
U.S. OPEN CUP DRAW
Following a 3-1 win after extra time against Cascadia-rival
Seattle Sounders FC on Tuesday at Starfire Stadium in Tukwila,
Wash., the Timbers were drawn against Real Salt Lake in the Round
of 16. Portland will travel to face Real Salt Lake on Wednesday,
July 1, at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah; kickoff is set for 7
p.m. (Pacific).
UPCOMING MILESTONES
With his next assist, midfielder Jack Jewsbury will move into a
tie for 10th place overall on the Timbers all-time career assists
chart with Timbers Ring of Honor member Jimmy Conway (1978-80).
Jewsbury currently sits in 11th place with 15 assists for Portland
since 2011.
Defender Liam Ridgewell enters Saturdays match with 30
consecutive starts for the Timbers. Ridgewell has started every
match for Portland since his debut on July 18, 2014. Ridgewell has
played an MLS-club record 2,700 consecutive minutes and can extend
his record on Saturday with a start Houston.
Defender Nat Borchers next goal will be his 15th career MLS
goal. Entering the weekend, Borchers has netted 14 career goals,
including two with the Timbers, since 2003. His next goal will also
tie a single-season MLS career high (3) set in 2011 with Real Salt
Lake.
Midfielder Will Johnson is just 173 minutes shy of reaching the
15,000 minutes played mileston for his MLS career. Johnson has
logged 14,737 minutes in 178 career MLS matches spanning nine
seasons with Chicago, Real Salt Lake and Portland.
Forward Fanendo Adis next appearance for the Timbers will mark
his 40th career MLS game for Portland. Adi has scored 15 goals in
39 regular-season appearances since joining the club on May 13,
2014.
GOOD FORM
The Timbers enter Saturdays match on a three-game winning streak
in MLS regular-season play. The three-game streak is currently tied
with Toronto FC for the longest active winning streak in MLS.
Portland has won four of its last six league matches heading into
Saturdays contest against Houston.
CONSISTENT BACK LINE
Portland has utilized the same back line combination of Alvas
Powell, Nat Borch-ers, Liam Ridgewell and Jorge Villafaa along with
goalkeeper Adam Kwarasey in 14 of the teams 15 regular-season
matches this season. The only game with a different starting back
line was May 27 against D.C. United as defender Noberto Paparatto
made his first start of the season, helping the Timbers to a 1-0
win at Providence Park.
AMONG LEAGUE LEADERS
Goalkeeper Adam Kwarasey ranks among the leagues top goalkeepers
in several categories. Kwarasey is tied for third among all
goalkeepers with six shutouts this season, just two behind Seattles
Stefan Frei (8) for the lead. Kwarasey also ranks in the top eight
in saves percentage (73.1) and is tied for second in minutes played
(1,350) among goalkeepers.
STINGY DEFENSE
Through 15 league games, the Timbers have conceded the
third-fewest goals to their opponents (14). Only Sounders FC (11)
and the Colorado Rapids (12) have conceded fewer goals.
LATE-GAME DRAMATICS
Never out of a contest, the Timbers are tied for first in the
league with seven goals scored in the final 15 minutes of games.
Recently, Portland netted the game-winning goal at Colorado in
second-half stoppage time on May 30.

HOME SUCCESS
Portland has compiled one of the leagues best home records with
an overall mark of 19-5-17 (.671) over the last two-plus seasons
since 2013. The Timbers have lost just one home game (5-1-5) in
their last 10 at Providence Park dating back to the 2014 season.
Additionally, when scoring first at Providence Park since the 2013
season, the Timbers have registered a 17-1-5 overall record.
DIVERSE ATTACK
Entering the weekend, the Timbers rank tied for second in the
league in the amount of players who have tallied at least a goal or
an assist this season. Portland has seen 14 players contributed at
least one point through the teams 15 matches, which trails only
D.C. United (16) for the league lead.
FOUL DIFFERENTIAL
So far in the 2015 season, no team has a higher foul
differential than the Tim-bers. Portland has suffered 50 more fouls
than they have conceded through 15 regular-season game and no
individual player has been fouled more in MLS than Darlington
Nagbe, who has been fouled 45 times.
