HITMEN HEADLINES: The Calgary Hitmen (34-19-4-1) winners of two games in a row and six of their last seven, host the Brandon Wheat Kings (32-21-4-2) tonight. Game time at Scotiabank Saddledome is 7:00 p.m. for One Ticket, One Tree. For each game day and group ticket sold, the Hitmen will plant a tree for reforestation projects in the province. Last year, the Hitmen in partnership with Tree Canada, planted more than 2,500 trees in Alberta. The Hitmen are coming off yesterday’s 4-1 victory over the Winnipeg ICE in the 4th annual TELUS BE BRAVE game. Played in front of 13,172 fans, including over 12,000 Calgary and area students, a message of acceptance and bullying prevention was conveyed from three guest speakers, concourse displays and in-game activities. Calgary product Kyle Olson led the Hitmen with two goals and an assist while Mark Kastelic and Carson Focht also found the back of the net. Kastelic’s marker was his 122nd career goal moving him past Borys Protsenko and into sole possession of third place on the clubs all-time goal scoring list. He trails only Brad Moran (204) and Pavel Brendl (172). Calgary outshot the ICE 39-27. Rookie goaltender Brayden Peters made 26 saves to record the win while Liam Hughes made 35 stops for Winnipeg. WHERE THEY STAND: Calgary, at 73 points, holds the first Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference sitting eight points up on Saskatoon. The Hitmen are also tied with Medicine Hat for third place in the Central Division. Both teams are in action tonight with the Blades home to Prince Albert and the Tigers in Regina. Brandon is second in the East Division with 70 points, three points behind the front-running Prince Albert Raiders. VS. BRANDON: Tonight is the fourth and final regular season meetings between the Hitmen and Wheat Kings. Brandon has won two of the three games outscoring Calgary 10-5. Carson Focht (1g, 2a) leads the Hitmen in the season series with three points while Orca Wiesblatt (2g) and Jett Woo (2a) both have two points each. Goaltenders Jack McNaughton (.912) and Brayden Peters (.920) have also posted strong numbers against the Wheat Kings. Luka Burzan (2g, 2a) and Cole Reinhardt (1g, 3a) are the top performers for Brandon with four points each. Goaltender Jiri Patera has been spectacular stopping 67 of 68 shots in two victories for a .985 save percentage. Calgary is 2-4-1-0 in their last seven home games against Brandon.

Kyle Olson (4g, 2a), Jackson van de Leest (5a), Orca Wiesblatt (2g, 3a) and Cael Zimmerman (1g, 3a) are all riding three-game point streaks. Brayden Peters has won back-to-back starts in goal posting a 2.50 goals against average and .935 save percentage. Luke Prokop (3g, 1a) and Riley Fiddler-Schultz (1g, 1a) both had their two-game point streaks halted on Thursday. ALUMNUS OF THE GAME: This 25th anniversary season, the Hitmen in partnership with Adrenalin Source for Sports, are honouring an alumnus at each home game. Today’s alumnus, Gerry Festa, spent parts of two seasons with the Hitmen from 2002 to 2004 as a goaltender. His career 2.72 goals against average ranks 12th in franchise history. Festa appeared in 60 games with Calgary, making 1,496 saves for a .904 save percentage. PLAYOFF BOUND: On. Feb. 22 in Kamloops, the Hitmen clinched a playoff berth for the second consecutive season and for the eighth time in nine years. Overall this will mark Calgary’s 21st post-season appearance in their 25 year club history. As for who they will face in the opening round, it is currently anyone of six teams in; Brandon, Edmonton, Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, Saskatoon or Winnipeg. HOME AND AWAY COMPARISON: Calgary is 18-9-1-1 at home, grabbing points in 15 of their last 20 games while posting a 13-5-1-1 record at the ‘Dome. Brandon is 16-13-1-0 on the road including a 2-0-1 mark in their last three games away from Westoba Place. NEWS & NOTES: Clinched: The Wheat Kings clinched a berth in the 2020 WHL Playoffs with their 9-1 win on Wednesday night. Brandon’s last taste of playoff hockey came in the spring of 2018, when they were eliminated in six games by the Lethbridge Hurricanes in the second round. Brandon has played just two home playoff games since the 2016 Championship season. Everybody Chips In: Sixteen of the eighteen skaters dressed on Wednesday found the scoreboard with defenseman combining for seven points (2G-5A) on the night. Five different players registered multi-point nights. Monkey Off His Back: 20-year-old defenseman Dom Schmiemann scored his first goal since September 28th. Good Bloodlines: Riley Ginnell’s grandfather Pat Ginnell was a WHL coaching legend, spending 18-years behind the bench for Flin Flon, Medicine Hat, Lethbridge, Victoria and New Westminster. He also spent 14 years as a scout for the St. Louis Blues. Riley’s brother Brad plays for the Spokane Chiefs while their father Erin spent two years playing in the WHL before moving on to coaching. Uncle Doug: Jake Chiasson’s uncle Doug Lidster played 897 NHL games with Vancouver, St. Louis, New York and Dallas. He also spent five years as an assistant coach with the Canucks and the AHL’s Texas Stars. He is currently the coach of the Victory Honda U16 team in Plymouth, Michigan.

Baby Bobcat: Lynden McCallum’s father Bruce was a five-year member of the Brandon University Bobcats. McCallum played in 114 games for the Bobcats from 1990-1995, scoring 33 times and adding 33 assists for 66 career CIS points. Billy’s Back: The newest addition to Dave Lowry’s staff is former captain Mark Derlago. The Brandon native played 209 games for the Wheat Kings before moving on to a twelve year professional career. He retired at the conclusion of the 18/19 season.

MacGillivray Collects W’s : Assistant Coach Don MacGillivray is the 2nd Winningest coach in Manitoba Junior Hockey League history (669). He is just two wins shy of the league record. (Doug Stokes, 670). MacGillivray who is in his 4th season with the Wheat Kings spent time behind the bench with Neepawa, Portage and the Winnipeg Blues in the MJHL with a brief stint as an Assistant Coach with the Prince Albert Raiders from 1996-1998.
