commission- ers and to every commercial organi- zation in Florida regarding the raising of funds for the presentation of a silver service to the battleship Flor- ida Dear Sir At the last session of the Legislature the bill introduced to appropriate 5000 towards the pur chase of a silver service for the bat- tleship Florida failed of passage and It now behooves us to get to work and collect same by public subscrip- tion This Doard of Trade having taken the initiative in this matter now that we collect from 17000 to 10000 by general subscription from au over the State We think it is a very great compllmeat that the larg- est battleship In the American navy IB named after our State and It should be fittingly recognized by have ing a handsome silver service on which could be traced the beautiful history of Florida from Its early dis- covery and Bettlemeat When the amount Is collected It is proposed to have the Governor ap point a representative committee to look after the details as well as to present the service In the spring of 1911 MVe respectfully urge upon you the great importance of this matter ud ask for your hearty cooperation by starting subscription lists in your community at once Make remit- tance to the Jacksonville Doard of Trade which will act as custodian- of tho funds and make acknowledge mont through the press and If a sufficient amount cannot be collected then amounts la hand will be re- turned to subscribers but we must not at the start acknowledge such a word as failure This Is an important matter and Gainesville and Alachua county should contribute liberally towards the purchase of the service It is the custom of every State to present such a service to the battleship after the commonwealth and cer- tainly our own State will not be the only one to fall to show Its appre- ciation of this recognition on the part of the National Government It Is to bo regretted that the Legislature failed to make an appropriation for the purchase of this service but such is the case and it now behooves the people of Florida to do as indi- viduals what a negligent Legislature failed to do for them If Mayor Davis will open a subscription list for the purchase of this silver serv- ice The Sun will aid him In every way possible The Birmingham News says At all events things are shaping them- selves for the most favorable busi- ness conditions MacVeagh says he Is satisfied that there are too many employes In the department that a great many of them are useless to the public service while others are actually a drag upon the transaction of business The prob abilities are that when tho shaking up has been completed several hundred employee will have to go And that Is why there Is so much unrest among department clerks In Washington and
