Gagne's 9 Events of Instruction

Teacher show a series of example to gain the learner’s attention by giving them a set of numbers from 0-9 in flashcards. Asks learners how numbers are used.

Teacher says, “Today we are going to learn on giving the place value of each digit, and to read and write numerals.”

About Robert Mills Gagne

(August 21, 1916 – April 28, 2002) is an education psychologist best known for his "Conditions of Learning" which identified the mental conditions of learning and was published in 1965. He was born in North Andover, Maine in 1916 and died in 2002. He earned his Ph.D. in psychology from Brown University in 1940. He went on to work as a professor for Connecticut College, Penn State Universi-ty and Florida State University. He also served as Director of the U.S. Air Force Perceptual and Motor Skill Laboratory were he began developing his principles of learning theory.

By referring to the place value chart, the teacher demonstrates how to identify the place value and value of each digit by giving a series of examples.

Following the directions in writing the data, the teacher asks the learners to form the number and give its place value.

Teacher will discuss the three ways in representing numbers in stand-ard form. Show a place value chart which is up to the hundred billions place. Tell the pupils that the system of numeration has digits grouped in threes called the “PERIODS”.

Learners previous learning in terms of numbers are through the mon-ey they have as per given by their parents as allowances, and a num-ber of marbles and rubber bands they have kept at home. The teach-er assists the learners’ knowledge by giving the lesson at hand.

Do a blackboard relay. Teacher will give more exercises on the black-board and each learner takes turn in writing the correct answer and tell the value of each digit in a given number.

Make a group activity or a matching game – Groups will be given ac-tivity sheets with the data below written on them. Directions would be to match its number name and place value of the underlined digits. A representative from each group takes the turn in answering or match-ing the numerals.
