His orian and opponen o he KJV-only move-men Doug Ku ilek sugges s ha he oun ainhead

or he modern emphasis on he KJV can be racedo an insignican publica ion by a Seven h-Day

Adven is , Benjamin G. Wi lk inson, in 1930.17 Wilkinson’s book was among a small number o books ha were wri en o objec o heRevisedVersion (1881) and i s American cousin, he Ameri-can S andard Version (ASV, 1901). hough Sev-en h-Day Adven is s are no considered a par o

Ray, who ook up he de ense o heKJV wen y-ve years la er in he bookGod Wro eOnly One Bible.18 Ray plagiarized heavily rom Wilk inson, hough he d id no acknowledge hisdeb o him in his book.19 Ray soon became awareo a more sophis ica ed de ense o he KJV by arecen Harvard Universi y .D. gradua e EdwardF. Hills. Hills had done his disser a ion on ex-

ual cri icism20 and, in 1956, produced he irsedi ion o hisTe King James Version De ended.21

e essence o Hills’s argumen was ha God hasproviden ially preserved his word and here ore,

he Scrip ures should be rea ed in a way qui eunlike all o her ancien ex s. According o Hills,

God’s preserva ion o he New es amen ex was no miraculous bu providen ia l. e scribesand prin ers who produced he copies o he New

In o her words, God does no reveal everyru h wi h equal clari y. In biblical ex ual cri i-

cism, as in every o her depar men o knowledge, here are s il l some de ails in regard o which we

mus be con en o remain uncer ain, bu hespecial providence o God has kep hese uncer-

led by he logic o ai h o he Masore ic Hebrewex , o he New es amen ex us Recep us, ando he King James Version.22

Hills ci ed Kirsopp Lake (1872-1946) and John William Burgon (1813-1888), Dean o Chiches erCa hedral, who bo h sugges ed ha he reasons why here was a pauc i y o Byzan ine manu-scrip s o an early da e was ha ei her he scribesdes royed he exemplars when hey were doneusing hem or he earlier versions o hese manu-scrip s simply were worn ou and did no survive.

e older ex an manuscrip s ha have survivedo his day did so because “ hey were rejec ed byhe Church and no read or copied bu allowed o

I seems likely ha he issue ha drove bo hRay and Hills was he hen recen ly publishedRevised S andard Version, which was comple ed in1952.24 Be ore ha ime, hough here had been

Fuller’scon ribu ion o he rise o he KJV-only posi ioncame in 1970 wi h he publica ion oWhich Bible? However, Fuller did no always embrace a posi ionespousing he superiori y o he KJV.

In 1932, Fuller carried on correspondence wi hEdgar J. Goodspeed (1871-1962), he well-knownChairman o he Depar men o New es amenand Early Chris ian Li era ure a he Universi yo Chicago. Goodspeed was a no ed heologicalliberal who was involved in Bible ransla ion him-sel . e subjec o he correspondence had o dono wi h he use o he KJV per se bu he personal belie s o Goodspeed regarding major Chris ian

In he course o he correspondence, and apparen ly in response o some hing Good-speed had wri en o Fuller, Fuller indica ed hahe “pre erred” he King James Version “ rom hes andpoin o he beau y o he language. I was apparen ly his later belie ha cauFuller o embrace a s rong KJV posi ion inWhich Bible?nearly or y years la er. “Now many ne

I is di icu l o de ermine he precise in lu-ence o Fuller’s book, bu i is clear ha i playeda signican role in he lives o o hers who subse-quen ly embraced he “KJV 1611.” Sorenson, orexample, no es,
