Restrained Rubber Expansion JointsThe selection and application of General Rubber’s advancedrestrained expansion joints can be used to provide pipingsystem flexibility while restraining pressure thrust forces andother external loads. This approach allows for an optimal designwith a smaller footprint. Some of the economic benefits of usingadvanced restrained expansion joints include fewer guides, anchors and supports.

Style 5100H Hinge Rubber Expansion Joints are designed to facilitate andisolate angular rotation in one plane. The arrangement consists of a pair ofhinge plates connected with pins and attached to the external or internalhardware of the expansion joint. The hinge assembly must be designed forthe internal pressure thrust forces of the system. 18” ID X 10” FF with externallymounted hinge assembly shown below right.

This hinge arrangement can be usedin sets of two or three to absorb largelateral movements in a single plane. This optimally designed arrangementis an effective solution for absorbinglarge axial thermal movements froman adjacent pipe run (shown belowwith two hinge joints).

Advanced RestrainedRubber Expansion JointsThe selection and application of advanced restrainedrubber expansion joint designs can be used for customsolutions to specific and demanding applications.

Construction

The body is a one-piece rubberconstruction with fullrubber flanges, a high-grade leak-proof tube, multiple layers of high-strength tire cord, hightensile steelreinforcement, aseamless cover and hotdip galvanized steelretaining rings.

Style 5100P In-Line Pressure Balanced Rubber Expansion Joint isthe only effective solution for directly absorbing large axial thermalmovements while continuously self-restraining the pressure thrustforce. This arrangement consists of tie devices inter-connecting itsmain joint sections to its opposing balancing joint sections. Thebalancing joint section needs to have twice the effective thrust areaas the main joint sections in order to balance the arrangement andprovide somewhat of an internal anchor location. 36” ID X 36” FFshown right.

As illustrated here, these expansion jointsare commonly used when the supportstructure or adjacent equipment has loadlimitations.

Style 5100E Elbow PressureBalanced Rubber ExpansionJoints are designed to absorball-directional movementwhile continuously self-restraining the pressurethrust forces. This arrangementconsists of tie devicesinter-connecting its main joint sectionto its opposing balancing joint section andfunctioning in an elbow configuration. The balancing joint section needs only tohave the same effective thrust area as the main joint sections because the center teefitting provides for an effective internal anchor location. 18” ID shown right. These are commonly used when thesupport structure or adjacentequipment has load limitations(see illustration at right).

Dismantling Rubber Expansion Joints are designed for self-retraction to facilitate access to piping and equipment, as well asfor unmatched ease of installation and subsequent removal dueto its pre-compression capabilities. 36" ID X 14" FF shown at left.

Flex-Valve® Pinch ValvesFlex-Valve is a brand under General RubberCorporation representing our state-of-the-art line of pinch valves and duck bill checkvalves. It was founded with the purchase ofthe pinch valve division of Farris Valve, whichheld the patent on the original pinch valve. With the technical support of GeneralRubber, later acquisitions, and the additionof new and patented pinch and check valves,Flex-Valve has become a worldwiderecognized brand and leading manufacturerin the industry.

The original pinch valve is abrasion and corrosionresistant, non-clogging, maintenance free, and canseal drop tight even on solids. Catering to thedemanding conditions of slurries and other difficultfluids, the Flex-Valve pinch valve can outperformalternative products 10 to1. Many styles have commonlengths with plug, gate, and ball valves forinterchangeability. The product is available withcustomized actuators, controls, and sleeve types. Sincethe sleeve is the only part exposed to the process fluid,it eliminates the need for expensive body alloys.

Visit general-rubber.com forour full line of pinch valvesand duck bill check valves.

15

Flex-Valve® Duck Bill Check ValvesFlex-Valve’s duck bill check valves eliminatebackflow and seals around entrapped solids.

When used for storm water outfall/overflow systems, the valvesprovide quiet, maintenance-free operation with the addedbenefit of low opening pressure, thereby eliminating standingwater—a major health concern. When used for submergedoutfall diffuser systems, they eliminate marine fouling andbackflow intrusion with the added benefit of higher jetvelocities even at low flow rates, providing a more uniform portdischarge distribution.

The versatile construction of these valves is enhanced by theskills of our creative design team. We can adapt our checkvalves for additional applications including water mixingsystems, overflow vents, anti-siphon devices, coarse bubblediffusers, floor drains, sparging devices, and even, whenneeded, to increase back-pressure in a pipeline.
