Visit of Mr Jean-Pierre Mahoué, Director of the Institut Français de Nicosie and Mme Chantal Jauneau, Attachée to the French Embassy

Official Visit of the French Ambassador, Mr Jean-Luc Florent

.

On 20 September 2012 we had the pleasure of the visit of Mr Jean-Pierre Mahoué, Director of the Institut Français de Nicosie and Mme Chantal Jauneau, Attachée to the French Embassy. During this visit it was decided that an annual French Song Competition should be established, the first edition of which will happen this October.

On Wednesday 28 November 2012 our school had the great honour of welcoming the French Ambassador for Cyprus, Jean-Luc Florent. He was accompanied by the Mr Jean-Pierre Mahoué, Director of the Institut Français de Nicosie, the Attachée Mrs Chantal Jauneau, and Mrs Lina Yammaki, who is also a member of the Institut Français de Nicosie. Their visit included a tour of all three schools: the newly-built Early Years School, the Primary School and the Secondary School. Following the tour, His Excellence personally gave Secondary School students their certificates and congratulated them for passing their DELF examinations, applauding their efforts in learning the French language. Following the Awards Ceremony, a number of Secondary and Primary school students performed and sang in French. Ambassador Florent talked to students about the importance of pluralism in languages, and stressed the importance of becoming acquainted with a different culture and language, noting that the existing collaboration of the French Embassy with the School will continue and that the Embassy is enthusiastic to continue giving its immeasurable support to The Heritage Private School.

Comenius Project

UNESCO project

Carol Service

The Heritage Private School was represented by the Head of the French Department at the Teachers’ Preparatory Conference that took place in Molndal (Sweden) from the 5 - 8 December 2012. Schools from all over Europe participated in this conference, the aim of which was to prepare for exchanges of students and teachers between EU countries. Denmark, Germany, Italy, Spain, Sweden and Turkey are the other partners that will work with Cyprus if the project is approved by the Cyprus National Agency.

Our Primary School students with their angelic voices once again gave a genuine

French touch to the December 2012 Christmas Carol Service, just as they have

done for the last three years.

Polina Papoui, a member of the French Department, has been coordinating the UNESCO Project for the last few years, with great success. On 10 December 2012, Primary School students attended a day conference on “Children’s Human Rights”. This year’s topic was on “Peace”. Also on 14 March, our Year 4, 5 and 6 students participated at the 36th Annual Symposium of the UNESCO Associated Schools which took place at Kykkos Lyceum in Paphos. The topic of the Symposium was “Building a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence". The outcome of this Symposium was that peace around us means: education; children and their teachers enjoying fun activities together; the right for children to laugh and share good moments with their friends; the right for children to dream, dance, read, learn and smile, and for children and everyone to have a shiny day. A big thank you to all those who participated, assisted and supported, and thanks especially to the students for their hard work!

Cinema Night

Les Crêpes-Масленица Day

The Francophonie Dinner

On Friday 18 January 2013 the French Department organised a meeting at K-Cineplex to which all French language students from Y10 to Y13 were invited. The students who attended the activity were accompanied by five teachers. It was a very pleasant evening, during which our students discovered one of the biggest classics of French literature, Les Misérables.

On 7 March 2013 the French and Russian Departments organised once more Les Crêpes-Масленица Day, to welcome the return of spring! It was a successful and very tasty activity, as many students made great pancakes, and the Prefects served them with different delicious fillings during break times. We would like to thank all the parents, students and prefects for their support and exemplary behaviour during this activity. All the money raised (€279.79) went to the anti-cancer association, PASYKAF.

On the 21 March the French Department organised a dinner to celebrate the day of

the Francophonie.

La Francophonie represents one of the biggest linguistic zones in the world. Its members share more than just a common language. They also share the human values promoted by the French language. During the month of March different activities take place all over the world, which aim to bring people closer.

Year 4s became pen-pals with Belgian pupils!

Year 9’s

Trip To

France

The Year 9 trip to Paris is now a very well-established annual tradition in our school that both students and teachers enjoy greatly! This year it took place from 27 April to 3 May with the participation of 15 students and two teachers. It is a unique experience that allows our students to discover the French capital and the surroundings, to practise their French language, and to become immersed in the French culture for a week.

Our Year 4 pupils became pen-pals with pupils from Liège Belgium. The “Saint Benoit Saint Servais” Year 8 pupils initiated a correspondence and our Year 4s, Ms Mariana’s class, gladly responded. This was part of their project work on presenting themselves and preparing a “Page Perso”. Ms Jo’s class also put together a lovely display. We look forward to continuing this work next year with the pupils of “Saint Benoit Saint Servais”.

Peace Poster Competition

Fête de la Musique on 21 June 2013

Launched in 1982 by the French Ministry of Culture, the Fête de la Musique is held in more than a hundred countries in Europe and the world. It takes place annually on 21 June, the day of the summer solstice in the northern hemisphere. Thanks to the initiative and the dynamism of the French cultural network abroad (the Departments of Cultural Affairs at the French Embassies, French Cultural Centres and Institutes, and the Alliances Françaises) the Fête has grown internationally in importance and prestige. This year, for the first time, students of The Heritage Private School will be actively participating in the organisation of this international event in Limassol. We thank them for their hard work and we wish them lots of fun!

Announcement: 1st French Song Contest

We are very happy to announce that the 1st French Song Contest will take place on 11 October 2013 at our school. This is organised in collaboration with the Institut Français de Nicosie and is open to all private schools in Cyprus. We wish all participants a unique experience full of pleasant memories!

Merci à tous et passez d’excellentes vacances!

Anna Potey

All of our Year 7s participated in the Peace Poster Competition this year! The prizes and the certificates will be presented to our participants by the President of the French Speaking Branch of the Lions, Mr Vakis Ioakim and two of its members, Mrs Doris Papadopoulou and Mrs Pascale Frangoudis, at a ceremony that will take place at our school on 14 June 2013.
