Pendle Walking Festival… be part of it!

Welcome to the UK’s largest free walking festival! The annual Pendle Walking Festival has put the area firmly on the map as a fantastic destination for everyone to come and enjoy the great outdoors. This year the event forms part of The Great Pendle Summer Festival, which features the Great British Rhythm & Blues Festival on August Bank Holiday and the Pendle Cycling Festival, including the Tour of Britain, the week after. This year the festival is a bit earlier and falls within the summer school holidays. So we’ve a number of easy family friendly walks to enjoy. For younger children or people who prefer an easier walk, the family friendly walks are easy or moderate, and most are fairly short. Young families with children who complete any three of these walks to enter our Billy the Badger competition (inside back cover). Older children may want to join us on some of our longer or more challenging walks! We’ve plenty of walks that will appeal to people of all ages from very easy to something more strenuous. Just take a look through our programme and pick your favourites! Some of the most stunning countryside views in the whole of Lancashire await you. Come and be a part of it!

The Festival LaunchThe festival will be launched at the Aisled Barn at Wycoller Country Park on Saturday 15th August at 10am followed by a number of walks to choose from. The Festival will be launched by The Mayor of Pendle, Councillor Nawaz Ahmed.

Some of this year’s highlights Just forty years after the world famous Pendle Witches Trial, visionary George Fox climbed Pendle Hill in 1652, which inspired him to found the Quaker Movement. You too can follow his journey of revelation on the special Pendle Quaker Trail on the second Saturday of the festival. An inspired Mathematician, Jonas Moore, founder of (Greenwich Mean) Time, who was born here in Pendle, features on another walk. Inspirational countryside can also be seen around the only remaining Clarion House in Britain, which features on three walks. The house is just below the picturesque village of Newchurch, under Pendle Hill. If you’d like a challenge we have the newest long distance walk in the country, the Lancashire Witches Walk and a Pendle Three Peaks Challenge in one day! The latter takes in the wild moorland of Boulsworth Hill, Weets with views of Ingleborough, and the classic climb up the legendary Pendle hill. Complete the challenge and we’ll reward your efforts with our now famous Certificates of Achievement!
