The free/open source software movement began in the "hacker" culture of U.S. computer science

laboratories (Stanford, Berkeley, Carnegie Mellon, and MIT) in the 1960's and 1970's. There is a

great interest in open source software. Many large suppliers (IBM, HP, Sun, etc) use free and open

source software in their own products and solutions and also contribute with their own

resources in the various projects.
